I purchased this book as a last minute review in preparation for the October 2016 FPGEE. It was really good at giving some insight to the structure of the exam, I like that each section is summarized and the way the guide is written is to help you at least have some knowledge of each section other than what you already know. If you need to study a specific topic obviously you should use textbooks but for a review book it is really concise and easy to get through! I am happy to say that using this study guide helped me pass the FPGEE and i would definitely recommend using it if you plan on preparing for this exam.

Without this extragenetic information the differentiation would not begin.
 
Dr. Blechschmidt and coauthor Raymond Gasser, PhD, maintain that Haeckel's biogenetic law (ontogeny recapitulates phylogeny) was an erroneous attempt to explain developmental processes. Blechschmidt's human embryological investigations showed that Darwin's principles (mutation and selection) are likely valid for the origin of the species, but that they cannot explain the ontogenesis of the organs. The ontogenesis of each individual cannot be derived from phylogenetic facts. The authors stress that a clear distinction must be made between the vast field of phylogenetics and the much more exact and understandable field of ontogenetics—particularly the process of differentiation—and their goal is to present not only the abstract biokinetic principles of differentiation, but the originality of embryonic human beings as well. Their knowledge of developmental movements leads to their conclusion that differentiation is an undivided biodynamic process that occurs during development and includes the chemical processes as well.

About the Author
E. Blechschmidt, MD, (1904-1992) an anatomist and embryologist, studied the human form and the way it develops during ontogeny, principally during the first eight weeks after conception. He was the author of more than 120 scientific papers and numerous books.
 
Raymond F. Gasser, Ph.D, is Professor Emeritus of Clinical Anatomy at the Louisiana State University School of Medicine. He is a member of the Federative International Committee for Anatomical Terminology and the Advisory Committee for the Human Developmental Anatomy Center of the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology.

It's heavy (academically) and full of things that put what I learned in college to shame for their lack of scientific and intellectual integrity or rigor. I love all of Blechsschmidt's work. Well worth the money and time.

Inane and self-absorbed

I was really looking forward to reading this, as I love Kelly Oxford's tweets. However, while preening narcissism is right at home on Twitter, it's more readily apparent and distasteful in a book. Also, she hasn't done much of note to merit a memoir, making these disconnected stories just seem wholly self-absorbed, like that one person at a party who won't stop talking about himself/herself.

There are some books that are so bad they're funny -- this book is not one of them. It reads as if it's written by a 6th grader, a kid who can't write, but thinks "isn't that cute" might carry the day. Unfortunately, it's not even cute; it's just plain stupid (PC has now said that's a no-no word, but if it fits....). BTW, I was a mid-school teacher, and this book would have had a " rewrite" post-it.

Excellent with a little funky thrown in

Really love most of this revelation of liberation Kris Valloton has shared. He lays out a great framework for a Spirit-inspired and location-specific understanding of the issue of women in the body of Christ. A hearty "Amen" to his willingness to leave behind the curse and press on to purpose!
I found a few things to be funky; I don't consider Wikipedia to be "real" sourcing - certainly wouldn't allow it is a high school paper, so he loses some scholarly credibility. I'm also trying to wrap my mind around his idea of an androgynous Adam and "wombman", and I'd hate that to become a focal point obscuring the greater message. I hope he doesn't lose too many with some of his more personal, esoteric takes on several issues.
That said, I love the call to be willing to look at things from God's point of view as opposed to generations of religious tradition and pre-Jesus context. "It was for freedom we were made free" - what will you do with your freedom. Well worth the read and invitation to a greater, fuller life!

Made to be Awesome!

As I read this easy read, I kept thinking, "I knew it! I knew Jesus is for women, he's about me and I'm a woman!" I've often been frustrated with the church. I can manage a company and am entrusted with a several thousand dollar budget, but often in the church I've felt second class. It just has never made sense, especially when I would be blessed in management and promoted for being me. It's not something a woman solely can really argue for herself. It takes men. (Think of slavery, slaves wanted freedom, but it took whites to bring change). Thank you Kris for writing this! For being an encourager of all people men but especially women.

This book gave new cultural lenses to look through scripture based on what was happening when the letters (or NT) where written. Each chapter took about 15-20 minutes to finish. I'd recommend this to both men and women.

I always had trouble with some passages in the Bible that seemed to put women down, particularly in some of Paul's letters. My spirit just couldn't agree with what the words seemed to be saying. I mentally put it aside, figuring that my understanding is still incomplete and, as such a man of God as Paul was, I ought not summarily reject Paul's words. At the same time, I accepted theology that women must always have a male head, in church and outside, in order to be in accordance with the Lord's will. Even though I have lived my life probably 80% in line with what Kris teaches, I didn't realize how much that little piece of misguided theology had oppressed me. How is it possible that I had embraced and expected all equality but spiritual equality? I love how Kris values the different strengths that men and women have while ascribing them equal places in the spiritual realm. Praise be to the Lord for what He reveals through Kris and thanks to Kris for his obedience to be used by the Lord!

Sanderson knows how to craft worlds

Mistborn is a fantastical novel by Wheel of Time author Brandon Sanderson. The story tells of a world ruined by evil and how the Mistborn, people with powers to influence the world and themselves, seek to overthrow the tyrannical Lord Ruler. Vin is a true Mistborn, able to utilize every magical power available to her when usually only a few powers are available, and her journey towards overthrowing the Lord Ruler is one fantastical adventure from slave uprisings to twists about truths that will shock the reader. Action packed and emotionally draining, Mistborn is a great story from start to finish.
Sanderson expertly crafts a believable world and firmly grounds everything in it to a certain set of laws and rules. No character is able to break these rules, which is unlike other stories where the hero seems to only win by destroying the basis of the laws the world is based on. The characters are well fleshed out and it is easy to relate to their ideals and desires. Enemies are believable and it is easy to fear them as actual antagonists. I especially enjoyed how Sanderson was able to take a new approach to beginning his story, in that the world is so ravaged by evil because the hero from a thousand years ago took the power he had and used it to shape the world as he saw fit. This really brings out the antagonist and pushed me to find out his motives. It was interesting to see the dynamic between the Lord Ruler and Vin as they both took the same path and how they reacted differently to the choices presented them. Overall, the story is easy to get into and is very deeply entrenched in lore that will excite fans of the fantasy genre. Mistborn is the perfect start to a trilogy that I am hoping to dive fully into as soon as possible.

Amazing author, Amazing series.

Brandon Sanderson is a really great author. He tells interesting stories with lots of depth and always has some unique magic system. This book series is no different. I first discovered Brandon Sanderson when I learned that he'd been chosen by the late Robert Jordan's wife to finish The Wheel of Time, one of my favorite series. I figured that if he was good enough to be trusted with this massive and epic tale, then I should check out his other work. This was the first book I picked up and I didn't regret it.

This is one of those books that you stay up late at night because you're looking for a less interesting place to stop for the night and you just can't find one. It's not always action, though the action scenes are really amazing. There is a lot of time spent developing the characters. They have the complex emotions that you'd expect to find in real people. One thing I really enjoyed is how characters would sometimes mistake emotions in other characters and even in themselves and I think this offers a real sense of realism. A lot of authors write well and write developed characters, but everything runs smoothly, because you and the author know what that character is thinking and what motivates them. The author then has the characters respond in an appropriate manner that they'd probably only do if they were inside that characters head like you and the author are. However in this series, you get to see what's inside a characters head, but you'll also see other characters responding to them based on their outward behavior and what the character can deduce from it. I think that's much more realistic and interesting. Even more so, due to the fact that sometimes the character doesn't even have their own emotions correctly pegged and you'll see an outside character see the situation more clearly than the character you're seeing in their head. Again, I think this is really good writing, because as humans and non-mind readers, we can only guess what another person is thinking and act on that and we're often wrong. Think about how often you feel self conscious about something and how often you judge someone else for the same thing. I guarantee you do much more of the former and less of the later, but don't consider that the other person does the same thing.

On top of all of this, it's just a great story. This is a unique angle where instead of the standard issue "hero is discovered in a small village, learns they're great, conquers the world" you see the other side. You see what happens when it's all over and what the aftermath is. As an added bonus, each book in the original trilogy reads like a trilogy in itself. I know that what was packed into the first book is something I'd normally see in a trilogy of it's on. By condensing these and cutting out the unnecessary fluff, he's made a much better read. He's also made three of them.

The second trilogy isn't quite as packed, but just as good. Again, this is his uniqueness and pre-planning again, but he's doing something here I haven't seen before. He's writing three trilogies and each will be progressing through time. The original would be like medieval times, the second trilogy is old west/Victorian England, and the third is supposed to be sci-fi. This is playing off the old saying of science that is sufficiently advanced is indistinguishable from magic. On top of that, most of his books he writes (not all) are all part of a larger meta-series called the cosmere. I advice you look that open and I strongly recommend that you read all of his works. They're all great.

The biggest bonus of getting into reading Sanderson is his insane writing pace. He churns out a couple of books a year. There isn't any of this non-sense like with other authors where you're waiting years for one book. He treats it like a career and hammers away at it.

Entertaining and easy to follow, with twists and interesting characters

I'm not quite finished with the book, about 2/3 through. Very interesting development of the future world and character attributes. I've read a lot of fantasy, but this is different. A Lord Ruler, a noble elite, and slaves comprise the cast, but the Mistborn have some interesting powers I haven't encountered before. Also, at this point in the story, some other characters, with different powers, are being revealed. The plot is intriguing and has some twists that are unpredictable. The story lines are easy to read and characters are easy to follow, but definitely not one-dimensional. Sanderson is a great writer, and this book is less complex than others of his I've read. I listed it as dark, but there's a hopeful aspect to it if everything goes according to plan, and some comic relief here and there. The dialogue is especially fun to read, and really fleshes out the characters. Truly entertaining and not as much work as some of the other EPIC fantasy I've just finished. (Steven Erikson's Mazalan series wore me out, and I don't know when Martin will ever finish SOIAF. This book is more along the lines of Tad Williams Memory, Sorrow, Thorn in complexity, but it's an entirely different story.)

CD Version Review - Something to Listen to Several Times Over Years

Juggling Elephants is another VERY short story book on organizing your life and becoming more effective, another in the genre that we've come to associate with Ken Blanchard, who has given it his blessing. This story, another collaboration of authors, is worth listening to several times spaced out over a long time period but certainly, in my opinion, not sufficient by itself to become life-changing.

The reason this genre sells so well, I believe, is that our lives are filled with information overload and we have extreme pressures to achieve financial security. Information overload has added extraordinary complexity to our lives, and the gradual erosion of middle class real income has added a general cultural sense that our lives are out of control. Even our unemployed are stressed out with out-of-control to-do lists and do not experience respite from information overload. Therefore, there is a need for this genre to help us to understand why our lives are so difficult and give us small but usually short-lasting bursts of hope.

You'll see that Oliver Wyman, the reader, is listed as "Contributor." I am a big fan of the excellent readers. Wyman didn't do an excellent job here, but that doesn't mean he can't be excellent in other situations. He just didn't do a good job with voices of characters, which was required for this book but not all books. I believe he'd be excellent reading books that don't require voices of characters.

The story is Ok. I'll never think of circuses the same way again! It makes sense because being a ringmaster requires talent, experience and even wisdom. This type of story could be reproduced in a sense for many types of jobs, but a ringmaster is a great example for the lessons of the story.

We're seeing more and more of these types of books being produced. They are always very short, teach using a simple story and stick to basic lessons that we probably already know but tend to lose sight of when we respond to the demands of daily life. They might even be a secular substitute for many people, although I am speculating when I say that.

Useful guide on how to find focus and how to apply it

Great little book about putting everything in your life into perspective. Oddly enough, I read the book last night and this morning ended up describing the methods to both my sons this morning. They were overwhelmed and complaining about all the crazy things going on, and the whole idea of changing yourself into the "ringmaster" resonated with both of them. The authors highlight the main ideas or concepts, which are all pretty much common sense, but useful to remember when we get swept up the the swirling circus of our lives. This book could be a lifeline to anyone who feels life spiraling out of control, and if they use the tools to focus, place the players to their best advantage and not get caught up in the impossible, it may find themselves sitting back and enjoying the show. Juggling Elephants is a crash course in finding your center and then strengthening it by taking command.

Such a simple yet profound book!

A lot of self help books are somewhat tough to read, even more so when the author is too scholarly vs light and simple. This book provides an easy to read story and relates it to the narrators life in a sense that can be easily understood by most any person, more so by a professional. If you are having a hard time balancing your life and professional work, notwithstanding the many other things needed by us humans, this is a must read and a definite addition to the shelf.
