Book Explains Aretha And Why She's The Way She Is

This book may very well be the definitive biography of Aretha Franklin, an iconic artist who guards her privacy ferociously. I'm sure that she doesn't like it. It lays bare her life and many of the details that she keeps close to her chest. I'm sure she'd prefer that we concentrate on her legendary accomplishments. Her music is the soundtrack of our lives, but just who is Aretha Franklin? The book asks this question and the answers are complicated. Miss Franklin (or the Queen, if you insist--and she, reportedly, does) has lived many lives and been many people: motherless child, favorite daughter, child prodigy, teen mother, battered wife, competitive sister. If this book is to be believed, she is also the most difficult diva this side of Diana Ross. She's loving, while also seemingly incapable of love. She (allegedly) picks up people and drops them the minute they say or do something she doesn't like, no matter how minute, only to pick them up again. She jealously guards her title of Queen of Soul and has feuded with every female singer to come down the pipe in her lifetime, from Mahalia to Mariah to Mary J. I walked away from this book with the impression that Aretha Franklin is a jealous, petty, insecure, insensitive, spoiled, angry woman who has overcome and gone through an awful lot. No wonder she refuses to face reality and would rather live in a fractured fantasy world. She's conquered the world with her music, but Aretha hasn't been so successful when it comes to overcoming her food addiction and fear of heights (flying, in particular). She also can't find Mr. Right. In short, I strongly recommend "Respect," a warts and all account of the very difficult and often sad life of America's premier music diva.

Aretha Should Read It

I've heard the stories for years about how difficult Aretha Franklin is known to be -- to fellow performers, making audiences swelter at her shows due to her disdain for air conditioning -- and while I've enjoyed her Atlantic years recordings, her purported attitude always kept me from actually liking HER as a person. Not to mention that about 7 years ago I had the displeasure of encountering The Queen and these old men acting as her footsoldiers at Colony Records in NY when one of her peons tried to tell me where to stand. I had no idea why this old man was in my face and was about to curse him out until I realized that I was getting dangerously close to The Queen as I tried to make my way to the cash register. Who knew? And I was annoyed; if she didn't want to be noticed, then she shouldn't have had on that ridiculous black mink coat in April in NYC. But I digress...

David Ritz has done her a major solid by finally making SENSE of who she is and why she is the way she clearly is. That is the function of a great biographer; to make a reader empathize with the subject, even one we may have had previous unfavorable impressions of. That was brilliantly done here. Now my heart in fact goes out to Aretha Franklin, and understanding the nature of her idiosyncrasies really helps one be able to see past them to take in the full breadth of who she is and what she represents. As an added plus, this was the first book I've read entirely on a Kindle fire, and having Aretha's "Queen of Soul" box set playing on my headphones while reading it was a beautifully immersive experience. I can't wait to experience more music biographies this way.

I understand that Miss Franklin has released statements to the press calling this book a pack of defamatory lies, threatening legal action, etc. I hope she abandons that defensive posture and actually reads this book, and faces what truth lies within. (I acknowledge that there are probably some inaccuracies and one-sided stories, but the majority seems to ring true.) She clearly has issues with denial imperious coldness. Perhaps reading the truth will set her free.

A very enjoyable read. And R-E-S-P-E-C-T to Aretha Franklin.

Finally, the book Aretha fans deserve.

This was a fascinating book that was very well written. I like that while Ritz seemed to be in awe of Aretha's talent, he didn't shy away from some of her more unflattering traits as a performer. Like the way she embraces so much cheesy Vegas stuff in her live shows. At one point in the book it was mentioned that she didn't have any female friends. That was very understandable after reading about her personality. The people who Ritz interviewed for the book like her sister Carolyn and her road manager are also candid in a way Aretha has never come close to being.
But some of my issues with the book are that important aspects of Aretha's life aren't given the attention they should. For example, her sister Carolyn was a lesbian but Ritz doesn't even mention how the family or Aretha reacted to it. I think that seemed interesting to be a gay woman during that time in the 70's but Ritz only mentions it in passing. Also her father was murdered during a botched burglary. But Ritz doesn't mention what happened to the people who did it. He doesn't write how much jail time they got, or if there was a trial. That should have gotten at least a couple of pages.
Whenever I see or read Aretha in interviews she only gives nice pat answers and never says much of interest. I would recommend this book to anyone who is a fan of Aretha and especially those who were disappointed by her terrible autobiography

Transactional analysis primer in an easy-to-read format. Other than "Games People Play" by Berne, this is the best book I've found to introduce people to the idea that we interact in scripted ways -- and that we can change our scripts.

About the Author

Paul Krugman earned his Ph.D. in economics from MIT, and has since taught at some of United States' most prestigious universities, including Yale, Stanford, MIT, and currently, Princeton University.

Krugman spent a year in the early 1980s working in the White House for the Council of Economic Advisors. He has written and edited several hundred articles and 18 internationally acclaimed books. Notably, he is recognized as a co-founder of the "new trade theory," which has been an important contribution to the fields of economics and finance.

In recognition of his achievements, Krugman was awarded the John Bates Clark medal in 1991.

Maurice Obstfeld specialized in mathematics in Cambridge University and went on to MIT, where he attained his Ph.D. in economics. He has since held faculty positions at Columbia University and the University of Pennsylvania and currently, is the class of 1958 Professor of Economics at the University of California, Berkeley.

Obstfeld has authored numerous articles and highly influential books. In view of his prominence in the fields of economics and finance, he has served as consultant for the World Bank, as participant in the European Commission Study Group on the impact of the Euro on capital markets, and most recently as the honorary advisor for the Institute of Economic and Monetary Studies, Bank of Japan.

Good but it doesn't explain concepts in simple enough terms for a novice like me

This book showed me the concepts and talked about all of the topics that I needed in order to stay afloat in my class; however, I don't have an in-depth economics background so I often had to look up supplemental materials in order to learn practical applications for the material.

Simply put, the best Economics textbook I've had

"International Economics" does and excellent job explaining complicated models in a conversational voice that is easy to understand. There are a lot of textbooks out there that are only as good as the professor can teach them- this is one of those books that can teach you by itself. And this is one of those textbooks I'll be buying to keep on my bookshelf in case I need a quick reference.

Also, if you pay enough attention, there are a more than a few puns scattered around. Check out the side section on page 248 about banana trade called "Do Trade Preferences Have Appeal?". I've counted at least five.

Said too much to explain something much simpler than explained.

I needed it for class, I'm an International Business student...the theory in the books were very interesting but the language that it was written sucks. It used to many fancy words to say something simple- unnecessary. The context was great, but I had to reread it many times, just to try to understand what the hack the author wanted me to understand. Or I am the one the is stupid and the class was just kicking my butt, also, english is my second language so...but great stuff, the stuff that I understood.

Be aware that this is not from USA

I returned this book because all of the financial information is in foreign currency and is based on the economy found in a different part of the world. Although the concepts in this book may be relevant, for me the budgeting and costs are an essential part of what I needed to learn, so I felt this was inappropriate for me. I gave it 4 stars because I didn't want to criticize it - it may be good for those in other parts of the world, but I just wanted to let people in the USA to be alerted to this issue so they know what they're getting.

About the Author

Carole Tracy Orleans, Ph.D., is Director of Tobacco Control Research at the Fox Chase Cancer Center. John Slade, M.D., is Associate Professor of Medicine at the Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. I wanna stop my addiction and the way this book was described seemed to be in keeping with finding out more about the nature of nicotine addiction for the layman. This book was double colummed like a bible and was nothing but studies and figures etc. A good book for a Dr. but not for a non-medical person

This book is not interesting to read nor was it helpful in our instructor's class as she rarely used the book. In the beginning of the class, I did read through chapters 1, 2, 3, and 4, and completed notes as well as flash cards for study. I quickly learned that our tests and quizzes in class had very little to do with the material in this book. Again, this book is boring. The excerpts and examples throughout the book were distracting, equally boring, and unhelpful. I bought the ebook. Near the end of our semester I began using the search tool often to search keywords for any questions I had. That was likely the only benefit about my purchase. However, I do feel that my online searches were actually more helpful, more detailed, and undeniably more interesting than from the book. I cannot say this book will last long in my library following this class as a reference.

I'm still glad I bought it

I bought this for my Nursing Research course because it was a required textbook. This shipped to my house really quickly, and came in the exact condition as described. Although my professor didn't really require us to read this for the course, I'm still glad I bought it. It was a good price, and I still ended up reading it for supplemental information. It makes concepts really clear and is very easy to read.

About the Author
Patrick H. O’Neil is Professor of Politics and Government at the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma, Washington. He received his Ph.D. in Political Science from Indiana University. Professor O’Neil’s teaching and research interests are in the areas of authoritarianism and democratization. His past research focused on Eastern Europe, and his current research deals with the Middle East, particularly Iran. His publications include Revolution from Within: The Hungarian Socialist Worker’s Party “Reform Circles” and the Collapse of Communism and Communicating Democracy: The Media and Political Transitions (editor).

Ronald Rogowski is Distinguished Professor of Political Science at the University of California, Los Angeles, and served from 2007 to 2012 as editor-in-chief of the American Political Science Review. He is the author of Rational Legitimacy and Commerce and Coalitions and coauthor of Electoral Systems and the Balance of Consumer-Producer Power. He was elected in 1994 as a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and in 2007–08 was a Fellow at the Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin. His current research focuses on long-term changes in inequality and effects of regional specialization in the European Union.

Great Book. Used it for my freshman PoliSci course

Great Book. Used it for my freshman PoliSci course. Was a good book other wise though and I still own it. It is more like a philosophy book rather than a PoliSci book. But if you are going to be majoring in PoliSci, I encourage you to read this book.

I purchased this book as a required reading text for a class and fount that pages 567 through to page 581 have been bound in the book backwards between pages 582 and 585.
