The Best New Super Hero In Ages
By Stephen Vincent Kempton
When this book was first announced I read the description and decided unfairly that this was not a book for me. They were rebooting Ms. Marvel as a sixteen year old Muslim girl living in New Jersey. What could I, a 57 year white male living in Minnesota, possibly have of interest in a book like this ? But I heard lots of good things about the book so when I found it severely discounted I gave gave it a try.
I am glad I did. It turns out this is a book for anyone who likes good writing and a unique fresh take on a very cookie cutter genre. It is also a book for anyone who enjoys great art work and coloring. In short, it is a book for anyone who loves comics.
Collected her are the first five issues of the 2014 Ongoing Marvel series plus the relevant pages from Marvel Now Point One. In the back of the book it has alternate covers, Character designs and even a coloring example.
G. Willow Wilson broke into the comic field in 2007 with her Vertigo graphic novel CAIRO she continued with her Vertigo series AIR, then her first superhero work on VIXEN. Her first novel ALIF THE UNSEEN won the 2013 World Fantasy Award for best novel. She is herself of Muslim faith and spent her twenties living in Egypt.
Adrian Alphonsa is a Canadian artist who came to prominence with the charming art for Brain Vaughn's Runaways. Mr. Alphonsa's realistic depictions of children made him a great selection for this book. Sadly, I could name a couple Big Name Artist's who totally lack this ability. They draw children and teens simply as smaller adults. Adrian's art has evolved a little since Runaways and he has a very fine line drawing style that evokes a whimsical mode in which he portrays some of the characters as having exaggerated faces. This is a style which works perfectly.
I also found the coloring done by Ian Herring to be excellent and it added nicely to whole package. I find most modern coloring to be over-done and too dark so that it obscures the art work, this was clearly not the case here.
The story itself involves Kamala Khan an ordinary Muslim girl in Jersey City who writes Fan Fiction and dreams of being a Super-Herione. While her origin is not fully explained in this volume (that will be in the next collection) she ends up with elastic like powers which not only allow her to stretch her body out like Mr. Fantastic but change her physical appearance.
The first form she appears in is almost wish fulfillment as she takes on the form of the Carol Danver's Ms. Marvel at her sexiest best. She has long flowing Blonde hair and a skimpy costume. But in this reality based story, the high boots chafe her and the costume gives her a wedgie.
The story follows Kamala Khan and her gang of friends as she learns about her powers, makes mistakes and tries to do good. Like Peter Parker decades before her, things never quite go right for Kamala and she winds up being grounded most of the time.
The Inventor is first real villain that Kamala encounters. He is operating behind the scenes orchestrating much of the bad stuff. Towards the the end of the volume we finally get a peak at the Inventor and it is quite a shock. I look forward to all her future meeting with other heroes and bigger villains in the Marvel Universe.
Please Sample this refreshing take on Super Heroes and support this excellent book which is truly meant for All Ages. Highly Recommended.

oh, let this series embiggen
By H. Bala
It's not as if Marvel hadn't dabbled with minority cape & cowls before, but, once this iteration of Ms. Marvel surfaced, I right away lumped her in on that demographics roster of what's seminal and what's impactful and what's boundary-crossing. I love the absolute f out of this Ms. Marvel. She comes off as a breath of fresh air, much like Jaime Reyes did when he debuted as Blue Beetle in DC.
MS. MARVEL: NO NORMAL collects issues #1-5, as well as material from ALL-NEW MARVEL NOW! POINT ONE #1 and features words by G. Willow Wilson and doodles by Adrian Alphona (whose artwork I loved in RUNAWAYS). Kamala Khan is a 16-year-old Pakistani girl living in Jersey City. In a world where superheroes are commonplace, she's an ordinary teen who nerds out over the Avengers. She posts her own series of online fan fic. And, man, I love how she's written, how she comes off as a real person and how she consistently reacts as a genuine teenager would even when she's at last exposed to the improbable.
Adrian Alphona is the boss. He's ridiculously talented. His artwork is expressive and sustains this wonderfully light, feathery aesthetic. His facial expressions and figure work are really impressive. I love how he perfectly captures the teenager's exaggerated emotions, one more reason why Kamala comes off as so believable.
I wonder if Kamala's superhero origin comes about as part of Marvel's pushing its cinematic universe. On an evening sneak to a party on the waterfront, Kamala succumbs to Terragen mist masquerading as ground fog what's crept out over Manhattan, Newark and Jersey City. Suddenly endowed with alarming shape-shifting abilities and pressed by exuberant aspirations of do-gooding, she puts on a makeshift costume and begins fighting crime and, before you can blink, has somehow appropriated the identity of Ms. Marvel. And is it of social import that when Kamala goes into hero mode, she reflexively assumes the likeness of a blonde Caucasian girl?
G. Willow Wilson has stuff to say about assimilation vs. staying true to one's self, about social aspirations vs. keeping faith with culture and tradition, and maybe even about our society's kneejerk perception of the "hero" as this great white savior. Kamala is a typical teenager trying to find her way. She longs for acceptance from friends and schoolmates. She chafes under the rules of her stern upbringing. This volume shows Kamala's learning that invaluable lesson about not trying to be anyone but herself.
G. Willow Wilson opts for the decompression approach to storytelling, reminiscent of Brian Michael Bendis's slow burn first arc on ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN. Gratifyingly, the character work is a strength of this comic book. Kamala is a fully-fleshed out person, but her supporting cast also get some writer's love, from her strict but loving family to her pal Bruno's complicated family drama to another pal, Nakia, of Turkish descent. With understanding and knowledge and empathy, Wilson writes a story of a girl's unthinking bravery and struggle for acceptance. She gives Kamala a universal, contemporary teenage voice. If, like me, you'd been lamenting the loss of BLUE BEETLE (the Jaime Reyes edition) or RUNAWAYS or even POWER PACK, MS. MARVEL is your huckleberry. It fills in those empty spaces; it resuscitates that sense of fun and adventure and grand discovery. With her endearingly nerdy disposition and sense of not fitting in, Kamala Khan is effortlessly relatable. Rooted in cultural tradition, yet making a bid for her own identity, and always instinctively trying to do right, Ms. Marvel with her huge heart is a phenomenal role model for girls and minorities and everyone else.
By the way, Ms. Marvel's namesake - now going by Captain Marvel - she's also kicking ass in her own stellar comic book (Captain Marvel Volume 1: Higher, Further, Faster, More). So pick up on that, too.

No Normal for sure; this Ms Marvel is special
By J. Nehal
Many people think comic books should be escapist literature, and that's fair I guess. But I like to be able to connect what I'm reading, even comic books, to my world and my experience in some way and I know my daughter does too. And there's still not a ton of real comic book content out there for girls to connect to, let alone adolescent girls, let alone Muslim adolescent girls. And here we are. This Ms Marvel is a gem; a Muslim girl coming of age in a public high school in New Jersey. A dreamer and an iconoclast, she's living between two worlds, the conservative, protective, closed world of her Pakistani immigrant parents and the Western world of temptations and excess. Keeping her faith and her family ties are important to her but she questions everything around her as her values are shaped by forces from both sides. Her adolescence and her coming into womanhood are echoed in her investment with powers following a strange mist enveloping her city; her struggles with learning her power and her limits and developing a second identity are written and drawn perfectly to appeal to people of all ages with a special nod to those girls who need this exact hero having this exact experience the most. I bought this for my twelve year old daughter and I found it resonated with me too; the male characters are as well written and compelling as Kamala Khan's, G. Willow Wilson has created something very special for everyone in developing this character in 21st century America. Very worth the read.
