About the Author
Anita Woolfolk Hoy received her BA Magna Cum Laude in 1969 from the University of Texas at Austin, with a major in Psychology and a minor in Chemistry. In 1972 she was awarded a Ph.D. in Educational Psychology from the same university. From 1973 to 1993 she was on the faculty of the Department of Educational Psychology (Chair 1990-1993) of the Graduate School of Education, Rutgers University. Currently she is a Professor in the College of Education, The Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio. Her professional offices include Vice-President for Division K (Teaching & Teacher Education) of the American Educational Research Association and President of Division 15 (Educational Psychology) of the American Psychological Association. Currently, she is editor of Theory Into Practice, a journal that provides multiple perspectives and scholarly discussions of issues that concern educators. Professor Woolfolk Hoy has published research in the areas of teacher cognition, student perceptions of teachers, teachers’ beliefs, student motivation, and the application of educational psychology to teaching. Her work appears in the Journal of Educational Psychology, American Educational Research Journal, Review of Research in Education, Teaching and Teacher Education, the Elementary School Journal, Action in Teacher Education, Teachers College Record, Educational Researcher, and the Educational Psychologist. Her text, Educational Psychology (Allyn and Bacon), is in its 10th edition and is the most widely read introduction to educational psychology in the field. She is married to Wayne K. Hoy, the Novice Fawcett Chair in Educational Administration at The Ohio State University. Together have completed the 3rd edition of  Instructional Leadership: A Research-Based Guide to Learning in Schools (Allyn & Bacon) and  conduct research on teacher and school efficacy. justifiably a first choice in ed psych texts

Educational psychology is a field in which there has been an explosion of research (and of theories) in the past 30 years, and a matching proliferation of educational fads and products that are being marketed to school systems every day as the fix for one problem or another. Dr. Woolfolk Hoy brings order to this cacophony, highlighting the theories that seem to do the best job of explaining how students (and teachers) think and behave, and emphasizing what has actually worked in classrooms. Probably the author, in light of her prodigious experience and deserved authority, could be even more selective in what work she chooses to mention, but sorting through the stacks of journal articles is a huge endeavor, and I give Dr. W-H full marks for her conscientiousness and fairness. She does not run with the fads, but gives her critical evaluation of the research on both sides.

The Dragon Masters Return with Another Adventure ...

The second book in the Dragon Master series, “Saving the Sun Dragon”, continues the story begun in “Rise of the Earth Dragon”. It is also a chapter book that will engage new readers. It can be an enjoyable read-aloud for pre-schoolers and kindergarteners who have advanced beyond Little Golden Books. Tracey West has written a book that has magic dragons; features multi-ethnic children learning to become Dragon Masters; Griffith, a wizard, complete with a long, flowing white beard, who is the Dragon Masters’ instructor; and King Roland who may have nefarious plans for the dragons and the Dragon Masters.

When Ana’s dragon Kepri becomes ill, King Roland orders Griffith to heal Kepri. If he cannot, Roland will replace Griffith with another wizard. The young Dragon Masters – Drake, Ana, Bo, and Rori – help Griffith search through a “giant pile of books” as they seek a cure. Transported to a faraway land, the Dragon Masters encounter Heru and his dragon Wati who is Kepri’s Moon Dragon twin. Attacked by tomb robbers, their adventure takes a dangerous turn; with the dragons’ help, they escape. Telling Wati that he, too, is a Dragon Master, he then tells the four that he and his family serve the dragons rather than being the dragons’ masters. The four Dragon Masters and a healed Kepri return to King Roland’s castle just in time to prevent Griffith’s being replaced.

“Saving the Sun Dragon” is an easy to read book. Chapters are brief, the vocabulary is not particularly sophisticated or difficult, and sentences are simple and short. The subject matter will interest young boys who may find some early reader books “boring”. There is magic and action, and there are mythical creatures that will engage children. Graham Howells’ black and white illustrations are on almost every page. This feature is a something I appreciate since my five-year old grandson has advanced to having chapter books read aloud to him at bedtime, but still wants pictures included with the story.

If you are looking for a series of books that will interest early readers, particularly boys, you will want to look at the Dragon Master series. It is not necessary to have read “Rise of the Earth Dragon” to enjoy “Saving the Sun Dragon”. Tracey West provides enough background information in this second book of the series to allow it to be enjoyed independent of “Rise of the Earth Dragon”. However, if your young reader or listener is anything like my grandson, you will not only want the first two books of the series, but will pre-order the others!

Fun and Suspenseful

My 7 year old son & I LOVE this series!! He reads independently, but we like to read this together before bed. The stories are suspenseful and captivating. My son is not particularly into dragons, so I wasn't sure if he would enjoy the first one, but he's hooked! We've read 1-7 and awaiting #8 to be released in the Fall. :)

great series for a 1st grader

This is the second book in the series and my son and I are currently loving reading it together. We read 2-3 chapters every night and he can't get enough. The pictures are great and inspire his creative mind. The writing is simple and imaginative for his age group (1st grade). We will soon be buying the 3rd book and I am hoping by the time we are done with the 5th he will be able to read them all back to me :)

Well, let me make this simple. If Ian McGuire was determined to outdo "The Heart of Darkness" by Joseph Conrad, he came close except, in this case, the ship goes into the horrors ("the horror! the horror") of the Arctic. It is an amazingly dark novel with the most vivid descriptions of characters (you would never want to ever meet) in place (would would never, never want to go.) It will become a classic!

“The Only Devil is the One Inside Ourselves”

The year is 1859 and the whaling industry, once a thriving and profitable business is dying. “We killed them all,” complains a whaling ship owner referring to the whales—in thirty years of excessive hunting and killing. Petroleum and coal is the future, he declares. None the less, his ship, the Volunteer, is about to set sail on a six-month voyage, headed toward northern waters—the area where whales are still most likely to be found, although far from abundant. Such is the time period of Ian McGiuire’s fascinating and very dark novel, The North Water (2016), long listed for the Man Booker Prize.

McGuire paints a vivid and bleak picture aboard the Volunteer. Just as an arboretum and botanical garden produce things of beauty, the area of London in which some of the whalers that board the Volunteer lurk before shipping out and the Volunteer itself rapidly becomes a petri dish that facilitates the growth of sordidness, evil, murder, and worse—all magnified by the true and villainous purpose of the voyage of the ship kept secret from most of the crew—all of whom fall victim to a scheme they know nothing about as well as the perfidy of some of those aboard ship.

McGuire takes a realistic approach to his entire novel and it is carefully crafted throughout, containing the finest of language choices. Everything about The North Water: the settings, the times, the action, the characters and dialogue, and the many plot twists all jump from the page and pull the reader into the world of a whaling ship. The North Water, however, is no mere sea adventure.

With the decline in profits for those working in the whaling industry comes a decline in character for those still willing to risk their lives on the open seas. McGuire wastes no time in painting a stark portrait of many of his characters in Dark Water—men, for the most part, who are not heroic figures of courage and stamina, but scoundrels with notorious pasts and equally abhorrent presents who make little effort to hide their true nature. It is McGuire’s character development: who they are, what they are, and what they do that is the most gripping aspect of the novel. One expects men engaged in such laborious work that takes them far from home for long stretches to be out of the ordinary, hardened, and insensitive to many aspects of life. “If you are seeking persons of gentleness and refinement, Sumner, the Greenland whaling trade is not the place to look for them,” cautions the captain of the Volunteer. The majority of the men aboard the Volunteer, however, are even worse.

Soiled reputations and secrets abound among the crew. Captain Brownlee, with thirty years of command under his belt, is “notable for his fearsome ill luck,” having been the commander of the Percival, a whaling ship that went down with loss of life, multiple injuries, and loss of cargo. The ship’s surgeon, Patrick Sumner, is on the run from his past after having served in India and having partaken in a most unethical and unfortunate incident. His refuge is not only to board the Volunteer accepting a position far below his skill level, but from the laudanum bottle. First Mate Cavendish is a “whoremonger” who lords his authority over the crew. The head harpooner, Henry Dax, carries with him even darker secrets. Each of these men play pivotal roles in the novel and as the ship heads further north into more and more dangerous waters filled with glistening ice, chunks of which become of greater size and magnitude, nature itself becomes an awesome, uncontrollable player as well.

Repugnant and amazing events begin to take place quickly after the Volunteer takes to the sea and event piles upon event in rapid succession that will hold the reader spellbound. McGuire’s storytelling is above reproach. By mid-novel, the crew “fear worse is yet to come, and they would rather reach home with empty pockets but still breathing than end up sunk forever below the Baffin ice.” Turning back is not an option, nor part of the plan, however.

Any novel dealing with whaling in the 1800s is bound to have allusions to Herman Melville’s immortal classic, Moby Dick (1851) and The North Water is no exception. The descriptions of men in small boats pursuing and killing giant behemoths in the open sea are white-knuckle reading material. Melville’s respect for both the animals and the men that hunt them are obvious as they are in McGuire’s work in spite of the insidious nature of some of his characters. Melville’s inclusion of the mystical and dreams also make its way into The North Water. The most obvious comparison between The North Water and Moby Dick will not go unnoticed by readers familiar with the American landmark novel.

The North Water contains credible and vivid scenes of violence, the horrors of trying to survive in a most hostile environment, and for some, a handful of stomach-turning moments when it comes to bodily functions and physical injuries and within keeping faith to the novel’s tone and authenticity.

In some ways the conclusion of The North Water is inevitable, but McGuire’s use of suspense and exceptional plotting of his story leaves readers with no certainty as to exactly what will happen until the final page is reached. Readers who appreciate good storytelling and literature, especially with a historical setting, will be hard pushed to find a finer, recent novel than The North Water to satisfy their reading needs.

I have never read such a fast, vile, exhilarating and horrifying tale in the span of four and a half hours. If you can put this book down and not look forward to pick it back up the second you have a chance, you must rethink your self honesty about the human condition and how vulnerable we are to the evils around us.

"Never in the field of human conflict..."

I don't qualify as a military historian to critique the content of the book, but I gained significant insight into the battle by reading this. It appears to be an intro book on the subject. My knowledge of it was limited to news reals from the period and Wikipedia articles. Mr. Churchill indisputably credits fighter command with winning the battle, ("Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed..") but some credit could go to Göring, who was essentially ineffective as commander-in-chief of the Luftwaffe.

Perfect gift for a British military aviation buff

Len Deighton at his finest: no punches pulled, no romanticization of the realities of the time and first-rate reporting of the technical aspects. I especially enjoyed the John Batchelor-crafted aircraft cutaways and exploded views. This pristine edition is especially nice as the print job was done in Japan which unlike Singapore or Hong Kong reprint services always come out exactly right.

An excellent read. I particularly appreciated the generous use of photographs and images to present the story. He concluded that the British won not because of the quality of their aircraft nor skill and courage of RAF pilots but because of RAF strategy and Goering's blunders. He also demonstrated that British victory made all the subsequent allied victories possible.
