Caroline Kepnes is from Cape Cod, Massachusetts. Her first novel YOU was shortlisted for a CWA New Blood Award. Stephen King calls her writing 'hypnotic ... never read anything like it'. Her second novel HIDDEN BODIES is a sequel that Booklist describes as 'the love child of Holden Caulfield and Patrick Bateman'. Caroline earned a BA in American Civilization at Brown University and worked as a pop culture journalist on Entertainment Weekly and a TV writer on 7th Heaven. She now writes full-time and lives in Los Angeles.

I buy violets for Amy. Not roses. Roses are for people who did something wrong. I have done everything right this time around. I’m a good boyfriend. I chose well. Amy Adam lives in the moment, not in the computer.

“Violets are the state flower of Rhode Island,” I tell the guy wrapping up my flowers. His careless, dirty hands graze the petals, my petals. New Fucking York.

“Is that so?” He chuckles. “You learn something new every day.”

I pay cash and carry my violets outside to East Seventh Street. It’s hot for May and I smell the flowers. Rhode Island. I’ve been to Rhode Island. I went to Little Compton last winter. I was lovesick, petrified that my girlfriend—R.I.P. Guinevere Beck—was in jeopardy because of her emotionally unstable friend—R.I.P. Peach Salinger.

Someone honks at me and I apologize. I know when something is my fault, and when you walk into a blinking crosswalk, it’s your fault.

Just like it was my fault last winter. I go over the mistake in my head a dozen times a day. How I was hiding in a closet upstairs at the Salinger house. How I had to pee but couldn’t leave. So I pissed in a mug—a ceramic mug—and I put the mug down on the hardwood floor of the closet. I ran when I had the chance, and there is no way around it: I forgot the mug.

I’m a changed man because of that day. You can’t go back and alter the past, but you can go forward, become a person who remembers. Now, I’m committed to the details. For example, I recall with total precision the moment that Amy Kendall Adam returned to Mooney Rare and Used, to my life. I see her smile, her untamed hair (blond), and her résumé (lies). That was five months ago and she claimed she was looking for a job but you and I both know she was looking for me. I hired her, and she showed up on time for her first day with a spiral notebook and a list of rare books that she wanted to see. She had a glass container of superfruits and she told me they help you live forever. I told her that nobody gets to live forever and she laughed. She had a nice laugh, easy. She also had latex gloves.

I picked one up. “What are these?”

“So I don’t hurt the books,” she explained.

“I want you up front,” I countered. “This is just a basic job, mostly stocking shelves, manning the register.”

“Okay,” she said. “But did you know that there are copies of Alice in Wonderland that are worth over a million dollars?”

I laughed. “I hate to break your heart, but we don’t have Alice downstairs.”

“Downstairs?” she asked. “Is that where you keep the special books?”

I wanted to place my hand on the small of her back and lead her down to the cage, where the special books are preserved, boxed, saved. I wanted to strip her down and lock us inside and have her. But I was patient. I gave her a W-9 and a pen.

“You know, I could help you go yard-sale-ing for old books,” she said. “You never know what you’re going to find at yard sales.”

I smiled. “Only if you promise not to call it yard-sale-ing.”

Amy smiled. The way she saw it, if she was going to work here, she was going to make a dent. She wanted us to travel uptown to estate sales and hunt library clearances and jam our hands into empty boxes on the street. She wanted to work together and this is how you get to know someone so well, so fast. You descend into musty vacated rooms together and you rush outside together to gulp the fresh air and laugh and agree that the only thing to do now is get a drink. We became a team.

An old woman pushing a walker looks up at me. I smile. She points at the violets. “You’re a good boy.”

I am. I thank her and keep walking.

Amy and I started dating a few months ago while we were on the Upper East Side in a dead man’s parlor. She tugged on the lapel of the navy blazer she had bought for me—five bucks—at a tag sale. She pleaded with me to drop seven hundred on a signed, wrinkled edition of The Easter Parade.

“Amy,” I whispered. “Yates isn’t big right now and I don’t see a resurgence on the horizon.”

“But I love him,” she begged. “This book means everything to me.”

This is women; they are emotional. You can’t do business like this but you also can’t look at Amy with her big blue eyes and her long blond hair out of a Guns N’ Roses song and say no to her.

“What can I do to change your mind?” she wheedled.

An hour later, I was the owner of an overpriced Easter Parade and Amy was sucking my dick in a Starbucks bathroom in Midtown and this was more romantic than it sounds because we liked each other. This was not a blowjob; this was fellatio, my friends. She stood and I pulled her boyfriend jeans to the floor and I stopped short. I knew she didn’t like to shave; her legs were often bristly and she’s all about water conservation. But I did not expect a bush. She kissed me. “Welcome to the jungle.”

This is why I smile as I walk and this is how you get happy. Amy and I, we are sexier than Bob Dylan and Suze Rotolo on the cover of The Freewheelin’ and we are smarter than Tom Cruise and Penélope Cruz in Vanilla Sky. We have a project: We are amassing copies of Portnoy’s Complaint. It’s one of our favorite books and we reread it together. She underlined her favorite parts with a Sharpie and I told her to use a more delicate pen.

“I’m not delicate,” she said. “I hate delicate.”

Amy is a Sharpie; she’s passionate. She fucking loves Portnoy’s Complaint and I want to possess all the dark yellow copies ever made and keep them in the basement so that only Amy and I can touch them. I’m not supposed to overstock a title, but I like fucking Amy near our yellow wall of books. Philip Roth would approve. She laughed when I told her that and said we should write him a letter. She has an imagination, a heart.

My phone rings. It’s Gleason Brothers Electricians about the humidifier but it can wait. I have an e-mail from BuzzFeed about some list of cool indie bookstores and that can wait too. Everything can wait when you have love in your life. When you can just walk down the street and picture the girl you love naked on a mound of yellow Complaints.

I reach Mooney Books and the bell chimes as I open the door. Amy crosses her arms and glares at me and maybe she’s allergic to flowers. Maybe violets suck.

“What’s wrong?” I ask, and I hope this isn’t it, the beginning of the end, when the girl becomes a cunt, when the new car smell evaporates.

“Flowers?” she asks. “You know what I want more than flowers?”

I shake my head.

“Keys,” she says. “A guy was just here and I could have sold him the Yates but I couldn’t show it because I don’t have keys.”

I toss the flowers on the counter. “Slow down. Did you get a number?”

“Joe,” she says, tapping her foot. “I love this business. And I know I’m being a dumb girl and I shouldn’t tell you how into this I am. But please. I want keys.”

I don’t say anything. I need to memorize it all, lock it away for safekeeping, the low hum of the music—the Rolling Stones’ “Sweet Virginia,” one of my favorites—and the way the light is right now. I don’t lock the door. I don’t flip the OPEN sign over. I walk to the other side of the counter and I take her in my arms and I dip her and I kiss her and she kisses me back.

I’VE never given anyone a key. But this is what’s supposed to happen. Your life is supposed to expand. Your bed is supposed to have enough room for someone else and when that someone comes along, it’s your job to let her in. I seize my future. I pay extra to get ridiculous theme keys, pink and flowery. And when I place these pink metallic things in the palm of Amy’s hand, she kisses them.

“I know this is huge,” she says. “Thank you, Joe. I will guard these with my life.”

That night, she comes over and we watch one of her stupid movies—Cocktail, nobody is perfect—and we have sex and order a pizza and my air-conditioning breaks.

“Should we call someone?” she asks.

“Fuck it,” I say. “It’s Memorial Day coming up.”

I smile and pin her down and her unshaven legs scratch against mine and I’m used to it now. I like it. She licks her lips. “What are you up to, Joe?”

“You go home and pack a bag,” I say. “And I’m gonna rent us a little red Corvette and we’re gonna get out of here.”

“You’re insane,” she says. “Where are we going in this little red Corvette?”

I bite her neck. “You’ll see.”

“You’re kidnapping me?” she asks.

And if this is what she wants, then yes. “You have two hours. Go pack.”

Addicted to Joe

First, I am in awe with how Caroline Kepnes writes! From the pop culture references to the insanely large vocabulary to the tidbits of knowledge that NO ONE should ever know, this book is filled with captivating items. Sadly, I found myself looking up stuff A LOT (ugh, no judgement).

Second, the story is an incredible blend if truly creepy yet highly entertaining. Here, we find our adored Joe (ok, so not adored but more like love to hate) has fallen in love again, this time with Amy Adams. And only fitting for Joe's luck, Amy runs off to California with his heart. Naturally, she can't have the last laugh, so Joe goes to Hollywood (gasp!) to track her down. Hidden Bodies is the tale of Joe exacting his revenge on Amy Adams and all of the hazards, adventures, sidetracks, and love affairs that happen along the ride.

There were some ebbs and flows with this book. At times I was sucked in that "one more chapter" turned into five or more. But there were some sections that lagged where I'd put the book down for a little bit. I so desperately needed to know how the book ended though, so I read my little heart out.

I dare to wonder where the idea for Joe came about, and I can't imagine to what depths of an abyss Caroline Kepnes has to crawl to in her mind to even fathom what this character is going to say or how he'll react, but it works. Pure (weird and creepy) genius. I love/hate Joe and will read a third book if there's more to his story.

I enjoyed Hidden Bodies even more than You IF that's even possible!

Joe pulled out all the tricks in this book and of course he falls in love and is up to his usual no good, but that's what we're asking for right? Throughout most of this book I felt like I was balancing two sides of Joe... his life chasing Amy and his life with Love. At times it was a little frustrating, but what I enjoyed most was the character development. Getting to watch Joe become a better man was what I was hoping for, but was also left wondering whether it would last or not. That's another wonderful thing about this book. It had me constantly questioning what was about to happen. I was thrown for a few loops and ended up being left quite surprised. My biggest question right now is, was he right?!

Another great addition to this book was the fact that I finally felt the characters were a little more realistic and relatable. In the first book with Beck and Peach, I just didn't connect with them and it left me partial to the female characters, but obsessing over the down to earth Joe who just couldn't find love. (Poor Joe). So I was THRILLED when I could actually relate to these characters and maybe it was because of their California attitudes ;) Whatever it was, I'm thankful to have gotten to see more depth in each character.

I gave this 5 stars and highly recommend this creepy and fantastic series! It reminded me of Dexter and how you easily get addicted to such an unfavorable type of character. I was left begging Caroline for more Joe!

If you read You, you sort of have to read it...

All of the 5 star reviews surprise me. I too read and loved You--I couldn't put it down. Joe is such an interesting character and his craziness really pulled me in. In Hidden Bodies, while there was still craziness, the entire premise of the story was so unbelievable and over the top, it made me constantly roll my eyes.
SPOILER ALERT: At the end of You, Joe met Amy Adam, and of course, because he's crazy Joe, fell in love with her. She ends up screwing him over and moves to Hollywood. So Joe moves to California, to kill her. While in CA, he meets a very wealthy girl called Love. Then we get into celebrity name dropping, mansions in Malibu, trips to Mexico, blah blah blah. Where it lost me...Joe tells Love about his past (the murders) and she stays with him, and then becomes complicit in one of his crimes. It ended up feeling a bit silly to me. It's a quick read, and not all bad, but I just found it immensely annoying.

About the Author

Linda Woodhead is Professor of Sociology of Religion at Lancaster University. Her research interests lie in the entanglements of religion, politics, and economy, both historically and in the contemporary world. Between 2007 and 2013 she directed the Religion and Society Programme http://www.religionandsociety.org.uk, the UK's largest ever research investment on religion. Her books include Religion and Change in Modern Britain, A Sociology of Religious Emotions, and The Spiritual Revolution: Why Religion is Giving Way to Spirituality.

Lot of Good Information but some Odd Statements

This is one of the stranger books about the Christian phenomenon I've read due to some of the characterizations that Woodhead makes. Some of the categories sound reasonable: "Church" Christianity, "Biblical" Christianity, "Monastic" Christianity and "Mystical" Christianity. As a Catholic, all these "forms" are nothing more than aspects of the one Faith.Overall, there's a lot of good information about manifestations of Christian belief and practice over two millennium that can be helpful to the uninitiated. Here is an example of an odd statement in my view: "The Holy Spirit is the presence of God in the World, a free floating power which 'blows where it wills' and can overwhelm and possess human beings ( as can evil spirits). This makes the Spirit a potentially dangerous and uncontrollable element for Church authorities." Read a little further and you get the point but I've never heard the Holy Spirit characterized in this way! There are a lot of statements like this that are not necessary wrong, just odd to this reviewer.

The Art of Deception is about gaining someone's trust by lying to them and then abusing that trust for fun and profit. Hackers use the euphemism "social engineering" and hacker-guru Kevin Mitnick examines many example scenarios.

After Mitnick's first dozen examples anyone responsible for organizational security is going to lose the will to live. It's been said before, but people and security are antithetical. Organizations exist to provide a good or service and want helpful, friendly employees to promote the good or service. People are social animals who want to be liked. Controlling the human aspects of security means denying someone something. This circle can't be squared.

Considering Mitnick's reputation as a hacker guru, it's ironic that the last point of attack for hackers using social engineering are computers. Most of the scenarios in The Art of Deception work just as well against computer-free organizations and were probably known to the Phoenicians; technology simply makes it all easier. Phones are faster than letters, after all, and having large organizations means dealing with lots of strangers.

Much of Mitnick's security advice sounds practical until you think about implementation, when you realize that more effective security means reducing organizational efficiency--an impossible trade in competitive business. And anyway, who wants to work in an organization where the rule is "Trust no one"? Mitnick shows how easily security is breached by trust, but without trust people can't live and work together. Mitnick is the most famous computer hacker in the world. Since his first arrest in 1981, at age 17, he has spent nearly half his adult life either in prison or as a fugitive. He has been the subject of three books and his alleged 1982 hack into NORAD inspired the movie War Games. Since his plea-bargain release in 2000, he says he has reformed and is devoting his talents to helping computer security. It's not clear whether this book is a means toward that end or a, wink-wink, fictionalized account of his exploits, with his name changed to protect his parole terms. Either way, it's a tour de force, a series of tales of how some old-fashioned blarney and high-tech skills can pry any information from anyone. As entertainment, it's like reading the climaxes of a dozen complex thrillers, one after the other. As a security education, it's a great series of cautionary tales; however, the advice to employees not to give anyone their passwords is bland compared to the depth and energy of Mitnick's descriptions of how he actually hacked into systems. As a manual for a would-be hacker, it's dated and nonspecific better stuff is available on the Internet but it teaches the timeless spirit of the hack. Between the lines, a portrait emerges of the old-fashioned hacker stereotype: a socially challenged, obsessive loser addicted to an intoxicating sense of power that comes only from stalking and spying.

I liked it overall. I think that while the information and the Mitnick messages were good, the basic pattern (verify your caller) gets repetitive after a bit.

Speaks volumes on social engineering/makes you think!

After reading it, the book makes one more aware of what to be careful when giving out information of any kind and how to protect yourself and your company's assets. I've heard alot of "Don't ever give out your id/password", "Always have firewalls on your network." One hardly ever hears about 'make sure you're giving information to someone who's supposed to have it'. There's tons of books on security with respect to technology but this is the first one I've seen that actually focuses on the weakest link when it comes to security - the human element.
All the firewalls and software can't prevent a social engineer from getting in if he/she knows justs how to act and/or what to say to get what they want. Reading the scenarios really opened my eyes. Theres a scenario where a social engineer pretended to be a manager of a video store. After enough talking to another employee at another branch, the social engineer was able to get enough information to obtain the credit card # of someone who owed money to the client the social engineer was hired by.
In reading the scenarios, I'd seen examples where I'd asked for the type of information described for perfectly legitimate reasons. I'd never imagined how someone could take just 1 or 2 pieces of information and create chaos for a person or a company. If you're in the IT industry, or work in any kind of customer service, you really need to pick up this book. This book doesn't bash people for being as helpful as they can be (team player, etc). He's just saying to be more aware of what's going on and when giving out any kind of information, being a little cautious doesn't hurt. As humans, we're not perfect to begin with, but a little awareness will make it just a little harder for that social engineer to get what they want.

During these experiences, I, and several of my professional associates, have noted that OTDR testing and interpretation are the two aspects of installation that cause the most difficulty to the largest number of novice installers. This book is designed to reduce such difficulty significantly! With diligence, this book helps you eliminate this difficulty completely! My strategy is ‘divide and conquer’. This book divides the essential knowledge and understanding into five, clearly written, concise, yet comprehensive chapters. Since words alone will not be sufficient, each chapter includes figures, 120 in all, to ensure that all concepts are clear. To further assist you, each of these five chapters includes a summary of key concepts, a total of 66. These five chapters guide you through development of the understanding you need to make and interpret OTDR traces properly. The sixth chapter presents a brief summary of steps you take during field-testing. This summary includes the easily overlooked practical aspects of OTDR testing. The 151 review questions and exercises of the seventh chapter further assist you in testing, developing, verifying and strengthening your understanding. The appendices contain answers or locations of answers. But this text includes more than what I know you need to understand. The 8421 people I’ve trained in more than 500 presentations have asked many excellent questions. These questions have enabled me to refine my explanations so that almost anyone can understand the concepts. Finally, these questions have defined the content and structure of this book. About the Author
For the last 34 years Mr. Eric R. Pearson has worked in fiber optic communications. This involvement includes a wide variety of activities, including manufacturing management, business management, field installation, training, and technical consulting. Mr. Pearson has delivered 507 training presentations and trained more than 8400 personnel in proper installation and design methods. This experience includes making and supervising more than 21,000 OTDR traces. Mr. Pearson has performed more than forty thousand OTDR, ORL, insertion loss, and dispersion tests on both multimode and singlemode cables. Mr. Pearson written four comprehensive texts on fiber installation, The Complete Guide to Fiber Optic Cable Installation (Delmar Publishers, 1997), Successful Fiber Optic Installation- The Essentials (2005), Professional Fiber Optic Installation, The Essentials For Success (2011, ISBN 9780976975434) and Mastering The OTDR [2011]. Since 1999, Mr. Pearson has been a Master Instructor for the Building Industry Consultants Services International (BICSI), and the developer of the BICSI fiber optic network design program, FO110. From 1995-1997, Mr. Pearson was a Director and the Director of Certification, of the Fiber Optic Association (FOA).Mr. Pearson has been a technical expert for a patent infringement suits, law suits between operators and end users, law suits regarding technical fraud in fiber optic cables, and performance specifications. The Academy of Professional Consultants & Advisors (APCA) certified him as a Certified Professional Consultant (CPC). He is listed in: Who's Who Worldwide, Who’s Who of Business Leaders, Who's Who in Technology and Who's Who in California.

[[VIDEOID:mo37KBFZNV428Y4]]This is the second book put out by Roselien Steur and Koos Essen, both educators who teaches design sketching. The first book Sketching (5th printing): Drawing Techniques for Product Designers was also on sketching. This book is marketed as the prequel.

The focus here is on getting the basics. There are seven chapters but in general covers techniques on drawing geometry, choosing the correct viewpoint, and adding colours and details. It's not totally basic though, some prior knowledge of perspective drawing will be extremely beneficial.

The examples provided are well illustrated and explained. There are lots of tips even for something as simple as drawing a cube, the basic building block. Every page is packed with information and beautiful designs. I like that there are a few real world case studies for each chapter.

The book could do better with a few detailed step-by-step construction of the example products, from start to finish. The way it's presented now is basically having sketches on the page, and focusing on a few parts, such as drawing rounded corners for phones and only that. The section on colouring should also be broken into steps to show how certain effects are achieved, like blending chalk with markers to get a nice gradated effect.

Overall, it's a very informative book. I'm not a product designer but I found certain sections helpful, especially the chapter on using the appropriate viewpoint to highlight product features.

Great for Industrial Design skecthing

This book is perfect for industrial/product design students or anyone with an interest in those fields. Or just anyone who wants to get better at the technical aspects of sketching. While this book is geared towards designers it could benefit any fine arts student as well. I was very impressed with how professinaonally this book was done. So many books of this nature bumble about a bit as they try to teach you something new, but this book means business.

The Poetry of Maya Angelou
