About the Author
Jack Erjavec has become a fixture in the automotive textbook publishing world. He has decades of experience as a technician, educator, author, and editor, and has authored or co-authored more than 30 automotive textbooks and training manuals. Erjavec holds a master's degree in vocational and technical education from Ohio State University, and he spent twenty years at Columbus State Community College as an instructor and administrator. A long-time affiliate of the North American Council of Automotive Teachers, he also served as executive vice-president for the organization and spent several years on its board of directors. Erjavec is also associated with ATMC, SAE, ASA, ATRA, AERA, and other automotive professional associations.

Jeff Arias has spent 29 years as an engineer in the field of electric and hybrid vehicles, and and additional four years in fuel cells. During this time he has done research, consulting, design, construction, and testing on over 40 different vehicles, including EVs and HEVs of his own design. He has worked with major organizations, including General Motors on their hybrid program, Exide on a new EV battery, Yamaha on their first electric golf car, Disney on electric powered rides, and Southern California Edison on setting up their first EV fleet. He has published over a dozen papers on electric vehicles and EV batteries, has been a lecturer at UCLA for three years in a seminar on EVs, and recently developed and taught an original course on electric and hybrid vehicles for the Automotive Technology Program at Cerritos College in Southern California. He is currently Vice President of Product Development for a company developing advanced lithium batteries.

Very good

I have been away from my studies for the last five years and this is a required text for my next semester. Since I have been away from the "scene" as they say I felt that even after 2 years of study and more years of practice that I would just brush up my knowledge before walking into the class/labs again. I have not finished this book yet but have gotten a good idea on the text and writings thus far. This is a very captive read despite it being more electrical basics and chemistry it does keep your attention. Not many textbooks can say that especially on something that you would rather just be elbows deep in some engine instead of memorizing terms etc. However, I have been pleasantly surprised and have actually learned HISTORY of hybrids in this text. Most people just think they've been a concept of the last 20-30 years but it actually goes back to the mid-1800's. I hope that the technology will be perfected in future and be made readily and affordable in the near future. I am excited for this course and happy I have a textbook that keeps my focus.

Useful reference, helpful diagrams and illustrations

This was required text for a hybrid/fuel cell class I recently took at a local community college's alternative fuel technology program. For the most part it clearly explained the systems, components, hardware and software that are integrated in hybrid/electric and fuel cell vehicles. The only drawback to this book is that the technology is advancing very rapidly so this book is obsolete in some chapters, I suspect that future editions will be significantly updated. It does cover the basics very well and provides a strong starting point for students interested in alternative fuel technology.

Someone should have QC the print

It looks like the printer was running out of ink during printing. The first 20 pages and the last 20 pages are VERY light. For $111 dollars some one should ha QC the book. Very disappointed

While sparks fly between Cash and Chelsea, Roxanne's past?a forgotten husband?rears his low-life head only to be found dead in the ashes of the plantation house. Had the plot allowed for more development, the reader could have become engrossed in figuring out the perpetrator and the reason for the murder, but as it stands, it's hard to care.

Lotsa steam and potential killers

Celebrity journalist Chelsea Cassidy has been asked to write southern how-to guru Roxanne Scarborough's memoirs. Chelsea is not to keen on this endeavor, since she has seen the temperamental domestic diva in action. But she owes it to her editor to at least travel to Georgia to meet with Roxanne, who has also hired a documentary filmmaker to record the progress of the renovation of her newly acquired antebellum mansion.

Much to Chelsea's surprise, the architect in charge of the renovation is her college lover. Though she vows to not get involved with him again, Cash Beaudine is a hard man to turn down, and he melts all her defenses, making her decision even more tempting. But Roxanne is not what she appears to be. A true makeover maven, she has made herself over, and erased her white trash past. But there are people that know her secrets and are willing to do anything to bring the diva down even murder.

Ross is the queen of steamy romance, and the chemistry and sensuality between the two leads is incomparable. She gives us plenty of suspects and keeps the identity a secret until the end.

Oh--I really liked this one!!

I loved the way Chelsea and Cash's relationship picked back up after all those years. It was also a nice change that Cash realized how he felt fairly early on in the book instead of fighting it to the very end.
The descriptions were great. I could feel the heat and smell the flowers! Which was especially welcome since it was snowing in Ohio when I read it!
Buy this one, you won't be sorry!

Can't put this down!

This was actually my first Joann Ross book and it hooked me on her other books. I found the characters, plot, and ending well thought out and very thorough. I especially liked how Chelsea ended up with her guy. I liked how it brought the Southern states out in a different angle and I love the complexity of the whole story. I recommend everyone who loves Joann Ross to read this great book!

Don't let the title fool you

If you already know how to ride great it has info for you too! To unlearn mistakes someone else told you cause they were wrong on what someone else told them. I'm a truck driver and hhave to driver for everyone else to. People in cars pay no attention theese days! So when you ride your scoot you should be more alert than a truck driver. At any given second you can loose your life. I recomend this book. Try some of the skills they show you and you will be a safer and bettter rider! If you feel this book isn't for you cause your cool, wait untill you taste asphalt

Bought as gift it is what you think it is

I bought this as a gift for a friend who is getting into motorcycles. He said that the book was pretty basic, but good for a beginner. Which makes sense because the book is motorcycling for dummies and the for dummies series is basically just a for beginners series. Anyway, if you want something more technical this isn't it, but for the basics this is good enough.

The quality of the book is good, author is questionable

First off, the actual book is fine, especially for a class or something educational. However, on a deeper level, I myself am not such a huge fan of Rousseau, with his ideas of "humans being naturally innocent and then being corrupted by society"; I myself much prefer Voltaire's view of the world during the period of the Enlightenment. This "book" is actually an essay that Rousseau wrote for a contest sometime in the 18th century, and the judges were so disgusted that they didn't even finish it. I'm inclined to agree with them. A must if needed for educational purposes (college-level would probably be best-I needed it for a cultural-philosophy course) but if you want to read philosophy, or an author's viewpoint during Enlightenment, find something better, like Kant or Voltaire.

Could use some editing

There were a few typos, and a couple recipes needed tweaking. I chose to forgo adding such exotic ingredients as a "2 inch piece of finger," though that recipe did require a fair bit of chopping, so I could see how it would happen. Unfortunately, my local grocer doesn't offer alternatives.

On that note, since some recipes do require either a specialized item, and lack the recipe to just make it one'self(not that it is particularly hard key ingredient to make oneself), I found it easier to locate said recipe on-line, in it's complete form and cook from there. The recipes do show some promise, but as prefer a less cannibalistic fair.

Does a great job!

I bought this for my modalities class, and it does a good job explaining all of the modalities and physiology behind them. There are nice summary boxes along the way that save you time if you can't read in depth before class. It also explains some of the controversies with each modality along the way, so it helps with decision making.

Innovative Twist of an Ancient Scripture

With the possible exception of the Bhagavad Gita, the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali is one of the most translated Hindu scripture in existence. The Commentaries are innumerable and rival in number to the translations as well.

This book joins the ranks in the many available English versions. The translator of this version — not apparently identified in the book — points out that this is an “interpretation” of this great work.

This version contains a commentary on each sutra. It also is a drastic reinterpretation of the work, creating a new terminology in the process. The meaning is there, the essence of the various sutras are present, but instead of retaining the original Sanskrit word of the various concepts found therein, or an ordinary translation, the translator/interpreter has employed his/her own terminology. Thus, instead of advidya, ignorance, the translator/interpreter uses “unwisdom.” The gunas are “potencies of nature.” Samskaras become “mind-impressions,” and pratyayas become “mind images.” Dharana becomes, “attention,” dhyana becomes “meditation,” samadhi becomes “soul vision,” and samyana, the combined concentration of dharana, dhyana, and samadhi, becomes “perfectly concentrated meditation.”

Using terminology in this manner is in many instances conveys more meaning because many of the original Sanskrit words cannot be adequately translated in a single word. The Sanskrit word, vritti is a good example. Some translations render this word as “fluctuations.” It usually takes a commentary to further explain to meaning of vrittis. This interpretation uses the phrase, “versatile psychic nature.”

This is an entirely different approach to the Yoga Sutras. While other translations have translated the sutras with more descriptive wording, and others have simply retained the original Sanskrit, this presentation goes farther in creating a entirely new terminology wholesale.

It is an acquired taste, and you will probably be reading this reinterpretation with another conventional translation at hand to “translate” the translator/interpreter’s meaning, but this version will increase your understanding of this work.

A perfect primer for MDs and clinical investigators

I just used this book to support my first year medical student class and it was very popular. Actually it is the second most popular biostatistics book I have ever used (in 15 or 20 years) behind only Walkers brilliant SAS cookbook (Common Statistical Methods for Clinical Research with SAS Examples, Third Edition) . This covers the commonly done statistics that clinical researchers will need to know to understand the medical literature. It leaves out things that make biostatistics students get excited (there are no proofs and derivations and very little algebra). It is extremely condensed but still an easy read because it focuses on the what and why without the how. If you are an undergrad studying statistics who wants to learn about application or a statistics graduate student who is training to work with doctors this is an exceptionally good book. If you are a clinical researcher this also is good but you will need to pair it with a book (like Walker's) if you want to learn to do the statistics yourself. If you are lucky enough to do clinical research with help of a biostatistician this book will be your best friend because it will give you enough of the details that you will need to follow along in conversations as you design studies and it will let you form well thought through questions as you interact with the people who love the details of the math (which are missing from this book). So, buy this for superb writing and just the right amount of detail but plan on getting another book to learn how to code (or point and click) the statistics that you learn here.

Brief but comprehensive.

This is an excellent book. I have taken multiple statistics courses but not in many years, so my skills slipped. The format is such that you can rapidly, likely even if you never took a statistics course, develop a good working knowledge. It is concise, using few works yet is comprehensive. I highly recommend it.

brief but useful

This is a decent review of medical stats and is geared towards those who want a general understanding of what tests to use in what situations. If that's what you want than this is a decent one to check out. If you are looking for mathematical proofs and complete explainations or statistical theories than this is the wrong book to get since it has none of that. Sometimes it is a little too concise and gets confusing (I knew very little about medical stats when I first got this and had to use other sources on a few subjects). There are good examples in each chapter (which are usually about 2 pages each) that help explain the concepts as well.

Posing as a 19th-century scientist's travel sketchbook, this entertaining hybrid mates the visual appeal of the Country Diary of an Edwardian Lady with a Jules Verne-like tale of Dinotopia, a land where dinosaurs and humans coexist. The scientist and his son travel around it, and the son grows up and falls in love. This unimaginative narrative exists mainly as a framework for the copious illustrations, which show breathtakingly exotic but impossible sights, such as a canyon city of people and flying dinosaurs, as well as amusing sketches of domestic scenes. The result is an enjoyable pastiche, full of visual references to cultures from Oz to Thailand and flavored with a Robert Fulghum-inspired philosophy: "Observe, listen, and learn. Do one thing at a time" (from the Code of Dinotopia). Though too superficial for the serious fantasy reader, this volume is great fun to browse through, and should find its way on to many coffee tables. 400,000 first printing; BOMC featured alternate; QPB selection; author tour.

Grade 4 Up-- Arthur Denison, a Victorian scientist, and his son Will are shipwrecked on an amazing island . Here, dinosaurs live in harmony with a colony of humans, made up of other marooned travelers and their descendants. Will and his father are fascinated by the technology of their new home. They visit a hatchery, a blacksmith in Volcaneum, and a city built on waterfalls. The boy is most impressed by the Skybax Riders, people who are trained to fly on winged reptiles. Deciding to join them, he goes through their rigorous training program. In the meantime, his father finds a route to the dinosaur underground, a mythic place referred to in old dinosaur tales. He returns to find his son has ``earned his wings,'' but his discoveries are saved for (one assumes) another book. This fairytale will capture the interests of older fantasy readers--those perhaps, who enjoy the ``Lord of the Rings'' trilogy (Houghton), or Lewis's ``Narnia'' series (Macmillan). Younger readers, too, will be enticed by the dramatic, full-color illustrations, which include both panoramic sweeps of the utopian cities and detailed sketches of Dinotopian contraptions. While the women are more active than their Victorian counterparts, the adventurers here are still Will and Dad. Also, the illustrations tend to portray nonwhite Dinotopians as exotics, a stereotype better left in the past. Overall, the success of this story depends upon readers' ability to accept these creatures as peaceful, intelligent herbivores. Advanced readers who find sharp-toothed carnivores more to their liking may prefer a visit to Michael Crichton's Jurassic Park (Knopf, 1990), for a not-so-tame tale also set on a dinosaur isle. --Cathryn A. A sweet, visually attractive utopian fantasy about an island where humans and dinosaurs--not to mention mammoths, flying reptiles, and exotic plants--live together in peace. Races and sexes are equal, long life is assured, and innovation is used to benefit the inhabitants, all thanks to the dinosaurs' benign influence. Literary stepchild of Robinson Crusoe and Shangri-La, midwifed by the Walts (Disney and Kelly), this creative anachronism purports to be a long-lost diary chronicling the discoveries of biologist Arthur Denison and his son after an 1862 shipwreck. The book's heart is its illustrations, presenting Gurney's imaginary society in the loving detail of the National Geographic--or a child's extravagant inventions. Much is made in the attendant publicity of the scientific accuracy, meaning that (though they speak seven languages, invent writing, and use tools) the dinosaurs look right. The technology surrounding the gliders, submarines, and helium balloons is also a little fuzzy, but by the time they appear the reader will either be charmed or alienated. Dinotopia is a fun book. James Gurney’s outstanding artwork is what really caught my attention. It’s as entertaining, maybe more so, than the story. The afterword about how Gurney created the illustrations is very interesting too.

I’ve been rereading some of my favorite children’s stories that I read during my preteen and teen years. As a middle-aged guy I enjoyed revisiting Beatrix Potter The Complete Tales, Charlotte’s Web, Winnie the Pooh The Complete Tales, Treasure Island, Watership Down and The Wind in the Willows as much, maybe even more, than I did as a kid. All classics.

I’d shelve Dinotopia and the first Harry Potter book, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, with this group of classic children’s stories too.

Normally I’m a sampler. I haven’t seen any of the movies from the following series, but I did read the first books, Twilight, Outlander, Fifty Shades of Grey, Divergent, etc. I sample a lot of first books, but I don’t read many complete series. The Hunger Games series by Suzanne Collins, and The Song of Ice and Fire (Game of Thrones) series by George Martin are a couple of exceptions.

Other sci-fi and fantasy authors I like include Douglas Adams, Isaac Asimov, Paolo Bacigalupi, Jack Campbell, Arthur C. Clarke, Earnest Cline, Abe Evergreen, Robert A. Heinlein, Hugh Howey, Larry Niven, Patrick Rothfuss, Brandon Sanderson, John Scalzi, and Andy Weir.

This introduction to the amazing world of Dinotopia is the best story of the series (four that I've read). It takes the reader along with the Gulliver-esque Dennison duo, a shipwrecked father and son who chance onto the mysterious island of Dinotopia. There, the Victorian engineer discovers a society where intelligent dinosaurs live alongside humans. The best part of the series is the fabulous art--fabulous in its imagination, realism and detail. The story, ostensibly the traveller's journal of Arthur Dennison, examines the society as an outsider, but the book is enlivened by diagrams, sketches, and gorgeous illustrations. It has apparently been re-imagined as cartoons for children, but this is a book that would probably appeal to older readers due to the slow pace. Not really well written, but still the best of the lot.

Perfect for dinosaur enthusiasts.

This has been around a while, but I just discovered it for my grand son who, of course, loves dinosaurs. He is 3 years old and we had to pry the book out of his hands so he could eat dinner. We keep it at our house so he always looks forward to coming to see us...and the book.

This is a very sad story of abuse and revenge. When we are young, even when we are older, we often do stupid things without considering the consequences. Four young boys actions lead to some nasty consequences, but then they become victims of emotional, physical, and sexual abuse at the hands of those who were suppose to watch out for them. Years later, they get the chance for revenge. This novel was a little different that I suspected. It spends A LOT of time discussing the environment that the boys are raised in before we find out what they have done to get sent to the a Juvenile Home. That could have been trimmed down some.

Wow. That was moving. It was most certainly difficult to read at certain parts, namely through the abuse that these 4 young boys endured, especially if you consider that this is supposed to be based of real events that happened to the author and his friends. I guess there was some controversy with that, some people claiming that this was not based on true events, but I'm not here to speak of that one way or another. Either way I think this was a powerful, emotional journey, and I am glad to have read it.

I loved how this book was split up into three separate parts, the beginning which gave you a look at who these boys were, their individual home lives, and the neighborhood they came from, which was almost a living breathing character in itself. Then the middle was the time they spent inside Wilkinson Home for Boys, where the horrific events that changed their lives forever took place. After that came years later with all the boys having turned into men, and you got to see the how changed these people truly are after the events that took place in that year they spent in the Hell that was Wilkinson. And you also got to see a glorious plan of vigilante justice unravel.

There were so many elements that made this story as incredible to me as it was. I really enjoyed how their hometown, Hell's Kitchen, was portrayed in this story. You were completely immersed in this place with the characters, which truly felt like it was a world of it's own, separate from the rest of us, with it's own way of living and rules to live by. It was comparable to reading a good fantasy novel, with amazing world building, and I was very impressed by it. I also loved these characters, I feel in love with these goofy, mischievous boys after just a few chapters. And reading about their suffering broke me. It was so crushing hearing the atrocities they lived through, and it brought out my own desperate want for vengeance. It's a pretty solid accomplishment for an author to blur the lines of right and wrong for the readers, and those lines were obliterated in certain aspects in this novel. I rooted for their thirst of blood from the men that had taken so much from them. I ended this book honestly thinking that those monstrous guards at the Wilkinson Home for Boys deserved so much worse than they actually got, and that's something because I'm a pretty peaceful person.

It was such an emotional journey, alternating between filling my heart up with love for some of these characters, and hate for others. This story definitely made you question a lot of things though, can vengeance make a difference? Does it even partially fill the hole that was carved in you in the first place? When is the time to take things into your own hands, is it your right to dole out your own form of justice? Can one event change the entire course of your life? What about one poor decision?

The relationships in this book were beautifully portrayed. They were enduring of so much. Too much. I also loved Father Bobby, and even King Benny. And then there were the more quite characters, like the English teacher in Wilkinson who gave Shakes the copy of The Count of Monte Cristo, or Marlboro man, the guard who saved them at least one indignity, that made such an impact, even though their actions and appearance in the book in general were so small. You couldn't help but hold onto those small good things. They were a ray of sunshine on the bleakest of days. They gave you a sliver of hope that some people are good, they care.

The ending was rather bittersweet to me. I wanted so much more for these people than they ultimately got. I would definitely recommend this novel, to EVERYONE! Seriously, you should read this, it's an incredible story. Now I'm kind of dying to see the movie, Robert DeNiro, Brad Pitt, Kevin Bacon and Dustin Hoffman, that's an all-star cast for sure! And now I'll leave you with a few of my favorite quotes...

"I'm beggin' you," he said, his voice breaking, "Try to forgive me. Please. Try."
"Learn to live with it," I told him, getting up from the table.
"I can't," he said. "Not anymore."
"Then die with it," I said. looking at him hard. "Just like the rest of us."

"It doesn't take very long to know how tough a person you are or how strong you can be. I knew from my first day at Wilkinson that I was neither tough nor strong. It takes only a moment for the fear to find its way, to seep through the carefully constructed armor. Once it does, it finds a permanent place. It is true for a hardened criminal as it is for a young boy."

"What?"
"I ever make it onto your s*** list, give me a call," he said. "Give me a chance to apologize."

One of my favorite books to date.

I couldn't put this book down! There are parts that are hard to read due to the author's well-developed descriptive style of writing. But the outstanding descriptive style is what makes this book so readable. I rarely ever read a book of fiction, so the fact that this book purports to be factual was a plus for me. After reading it, however, I read that it was not a true story. I don't know if it is an account of actual events, as the author states at the beginning of the book, but it is a very spellbinding read in either case.
