An engaging and inspiring qualitative methods book for students and teachers alike

I had the good fortune to use an early draft of Sarah Tracy's Qualitative Research Methods text when I was a graduate student. In particular, I appreciated the accessible language, myriad examples, and comprehensive set of resources that address the entire process of conducting qualitative research from understanding theory/paradigm to data collection, analysis and writing.

Compared to other qualitative methods texts, I found Dr. Tracy's style to be engaging and I appreciated the way she explained complex concepts by using her own and other colleagues'/students' research projects. The chapters on data analysis also make her book stand out from other texts I've read. Not only does the book offer a solid grounding in how to collect data, it illustrates basic and advanced methods to make meaning from data and develop arguments for various audiences--Really helpful when sitting with a giant pile of interviews/fieldnotes and feeling overwhelmed!

Having assisted Dr. Tracy in teaching a graduate qualitative methods course, I look forward to using the book and accompanying teacher resource manual in my own classes in the future.

Academic text with practical applications

This academic text covers all current qualitative research methods including in-depth interviews, focus groups, and the latest cutting edge digital methods. The chapter on how to analyze qualitative data is complete and detailed, and that alone makes this book worth owning if you plan on doing a lot of qualitative data analysis. If you do have a lot of qualitative data analysis in front of you, and if you enjoy doing so... well, I guess it takes all kinds to make the world go round.

Excellent intro into botany for the naturalist inclined child

My three year old daughter loves reading this book. It's filled with beautiful botanical drawings and is an excellent intro into the wonderful world of botany. I would say that my child had pre existing interest in the natural world so this book might be a stretch for kids without interest.

Help your child understand the life around him

As an avid gardener this book has helped my child understand why when we plant seeds there are no plants the naxt morning. He loves helping me garden, digging the hole and putting his plants that he grew from seed in the ground & watching them grow. His own garden.

Beautiful artwork, accurate and accessible content

This book has it all. Beautiful artwork, accurate and accessible content, and a poetic style. It also contains tier 2 descriptive vocabulary associated with the seeds, plus a drawing of the parts of a seed. It makes a great read aloud engagement for my science lesson on engineering a seed that can 'fly'. This book would work for primary to older students. I just wish I could locate actual samples of some of the more unusual seeds mentioned.

Basso, an anthropologist who has done fieldwork among the Western Apache of Arizona for over 30 years, provides a fascinating scholarly study of the meaning and significance of the Apache place names found in the area surrounding the community of Cibecue, Arizona. Some Apache place names describe features of the landscape or climate, while others derive from historical or mythological events. All, however, are rich in descriptive imagery and depth of meaning for the Apache people of the area. With the help of several Apache informants, Basso explores the place worlds underlying the names of localities and through them lets the Apache express their own understanding of their history, identity, values, and morality. This work, which won the Western States Book Award for creative nonfiction, is a valuable contribution to anthropological studies of place and location. It happened...

It happened in Indiana. A girl downloaded this book onto her Kindle, curled up on a porch swing on a fine summer evening, and read stories of people in another place and time. These people, called the Western Apache, saw places in a completely different way than she ever had. Stunned, she began to think about places and events in her own life, and felt the deep sadness of being someone who had moved a lot and lost attachment to some of the places in her family story. The level of philosophical background needed to digest the book sometimes led to her skimming over chunks of the book. The stories delighted and inspired her. As she ended the reading, another summer evening later, she longed for more Western Apache stories and determined to be more attentive to the world around her and the places she had been.

Wisdom Sits in Places: a brief review

In this book, Keith Basso presents the Western Apache at Cibecue. His decades long interaction with these gentle, articulate people provides us with an intimate and respectful view of a powerful tradition among them: the invocation of place names to educate, elucidate, and even entertain. Place names are normally highly descriptive: one can easily identify and understand why a certain place has the name it does. But the real power of the place name is less in its description than in the anecdote accompanying the name. These anecdotes teach some important moral lesson. By merely invoking the name, the lesson is recalled and no one is directly humiliated, scolded, shamed. The lesson to be learned is played out by the characters in the story and hence depersonalized. In this gentle, non-threatening way, individuals are taught the important lessons of living successfully within the culture of the Western Apache. We would do well adopt this tradition into our own culture and begin training our children in ways that build up instead of ways that shame and tear down.

Cramer is professor of political science at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, where she is also director of the Morgridge Center for Public Service and an affiliate faculty member in the School of Journalism and Mass Communication, the LaFollette School of Public Affairs, the Department of Forest and Wildlife Ecology, the Wisconsin Center for the Advancement of Postsecondary Education, and the Center for Community and Nonprofit Studies. Rural voting from group identity resentment of other groups not ideology

The Politics of Resentment Book Review

Ms. Kramer, a University of Wisconsin—Madison Political Science Professor, explored a recent political paradox, “We live in a time of increasing economic inequality, and yet voters continue to elect politicians whose policies respond very disproportionately to the preferences of affluent people.” She examined the origins of this paradox in her home state of Wisconsin, for which rural voters recently tipped the balance from a blue to a red state, seemingly against their own interests. To better understand the opinions of these voters as reported by the usual technique of polling, she personally and repeatedly participated in multiple informal discussions of thirty-nine groups scattered throughout Wisconsin for six years {2007-2012}.

The study identified a very rural identity with “us versus them” characteristics leading to resentment of urban and political elites, public employees, and diverse urban populations. A “rural consciousness” was identified that included “three major components…a perception that rural areas do not receive their fair share of decision-making power, that they are distinct from urban (and suburban) areas in their culture and lifestyle (and these differences are not respected), and that rural areas do not receive their fair share of public resources.” In addition, they believed they worked much harder for lower wages than less deserving urbanites, public employees, and recipients of public assistance and that their culture and communities were dying as a result of these discrepancies.

Reports are reviewed for previous examinations of these perceived discrepancies by the usual political science statistical techniques. At a superficial level, those reports show that rural residents are right about receiving considerably lower wages but wrong about not getting their fair share of public funds. In 2011, per capita median income was in excess of $70,000 for the richest suburbs, about $55,000 for urban counties (without considering the urban poor), and about $40,000 for completely rural counties. Per capita combined state and federal tax revenues were greater than $10,000 for the richest suburbs, over $6,000 for urban counties, and about $4,000 for rural counties. Per capita percentage returned from taxes paid was about 65% state and 150% federal for urban counties and about 100% state and over 400% federal for rural counties (both state and federal graphs skewed by outliers).

However, Ms. Kramer found that the answers from this political science approach didn’t really match the concerns of rural citizens on several important points. The revenues returned to rural regions were often in the form of programs imposed upon then by urban and political elites and staffed by public employees who lived among them. Rural citizens perceived the politicians to be tone deaf to their real needs and the programs to be contrary to their real interests. They perceived the local public employees to be outsiders (them rather than us) with much easier work, better salaries, and enormously better benefits than they had. They perceived their hard-earned tax dollars to be wasted on these programs, public employees, and transfers to what they saw as undeserving urban minorities.

This perspective suggests that voters’ preference for limited government was not rooted in libertarian political principles or identification as Republicans but in a strong rural identity with the perception that services were not benefiting deserving, hard-working people like themselves. Politicians, such as Scott Walker, skillfully directed these rural resentments away from Republican policies that favor affluent people and redirected them toward government, the people who work for it, and urban areas that are home to liberals and people of color. This rural identity with these strong resentments was already firmly established as the result of long-standing difficult rural circumstances and generations of community members teaching these ideas to one another in the context of the national political debate. Scott Walker merely reaped the harvest of a field already prepared for him (how’s that for a rural metaphor?).

So what are the lessons from these findings? First, as on the national level, citizens tend to vote according to personal identities rather than specific policy preferences, with attitudes toward social groups doing the work of ideology. Ms. Kramer examined the rural identity and its resentments in her state. Nationally, numerous additional divisive identities have been experienced, including those involving race, gender, Northerners versus Southerners, and so on. Second, in Wisconsin, it is necessary to reassess what is going on in rural places and reconsider the policy responses. 1) It is possible that resources rural communities are receiving are not effectively addressing the needs of rural communities. 2) It is likely that some of the resources rural communities are receiving are invisible to the people who live there so they are unaware of the programs they use. 3) The manner in which policy is created and delivered is important. If rural residents feel they have been listened to and respected, they may feel different about the programs that result.

My comments about the book:

My main criticism of the book is that the “Where Does Rural Consciousness Come From?” section is inadequate. Radio was dismissed as a source with the comment that public radio transcripts were unavailable but that state and local newspapers were a reliable indicator of the local news environment. Has the author never heard of talk radio? Is she unaware of the enormous audience of Rush Limbaugh? As for local newspapers, her study of papers from 2007 to 2011 doesn’t begin to cover the period necessary for “generations of community members teaching these ideas to each other”. In my view, her approach likely missed a substantial contribution from several decades of the extensive Koch political network propaganda machine firmly embedding these ideas in rural and other identities.

I can understand much better the vein that was being tapped

She is an academic, not a popular author. There were parts that were very slow going. Still, it's a very interesting, and in many ways surprising, topic these days. I can understand much better the vein that was being tapped. It would appear that a lot of Trump's supporters are going to be very disappointed, and more angry than ever, by 2020.

A Great Start To Understanding Rural Consciousness

Excellent analysis of Wisconsin politics that has a lot to say about our national politics at this time as well. I grew up in Wisconsin (Manitowoc) and have observed Wisconsin politics from my youth onwards. The changes that have happened since 2010's election of Scott Walker have been profound and Katherine Cramer frames the social-political issues very well. That said, I am only part way through, though her description of the geography of Wisconsin politics (and the primacy of geography in American politics) rings true.

The bedroom exploits are there, but it is Stoker's experiences moonshining and losses of friends who died racing that stuck w/me

The brief summary of the book at the top of the Amazon page mentions Stoker Ace's bedroom exploits. I guess it is a good idea to let potential readers know there is sexual content, in case they find such things offensive. But it never would have occurred to me to mention that when describing the book. Yeah, he has girlfriends and he goes to whorehouses, and he is a typical young athlete who likes to brag a bit. But that isn't the meat of the story.

The first chapter, where he describes his early experiences running moonshine and outrunning the law in souped up cars was fun and exciting. A glimpse into a world I had never imagined or heard about before.

Stoker's voice--brash and fun and lively--stands out. I understand it wasn't actually written by him. But whoever wrote it captured a really entertaining personality.

There are a few deaths racing and setting speed records in the course of the book. Not a lot of deaths, but a few. The author is very brief, "just the facts ma'am" in his telling of the events. Somehow this understated brevity makes his stories of losing friends that much more powerful. It is three or four years since I read the book, and just the memory of one of those stories sends shivers down my spine.

I should probably say. I'm not a motor sports fan, I'm not an auto racer. I've never had any interest in the sport. I picked it up off my boyfriend's bookshelf and couldn't put it down. I've never forgotten it, and I recommend it highly.

Mostly mindless entertainment

If you like racing, and don't mind reading about drinking, hijinx, sex ( often delivered with language usually considered crude,) you will like this.

I liked it, which should give some indication of my "refinement" ;)

If there's a negative to say, it's the disorganized aspect of the writing. There are spots, where one paragraph was in one time and place, and the next is in another. You get used it, heh.

Great Story - Worth Reading

This was a much better book than I expected - but then again I am an engineer of the same age as Steve Jobs, went to the same elementary school as Steve Wozniak (four years later) and grew up in the same Cherry Hill West subdivision of Sunnyvale, CA. that both of them lived in. So I was perhaps better able to relate to some of the things that the book talked about - I even had the same chemistry teacher, Dr. Hubbs, at De Anza College who is mentioned in the book. It brought back a lot of memories of that time and place in 1960's Silicon Valley life.
I found it appropriately technical but not too geeky. Also very honest and straight forward. In my opinion, an even better book than the biography of Steve Jobs by Walther Isaacson - which is also worth reading but a more definitive work.
Steve Wozniak focuses most of the book on his childhood, youth and early adult life & relationship with Steve Jobs up to the time when Apple Computers gets up and rolling. That story alone would have made the book worth reading.
After that he skips a lot of detail and talks more about his person life, marriages and things he did after his full time involvement with Apple. When you are all done you come away feeling like you know the person Steve Wozniak.
You also realize that without Steve Jobs, he would have just spent his life being a super-geek company man making a mid-six figure salary working for Hewlett Packard. And without Steve Wozniak, Steve Jobs would have probably become a B-list, new age cult leader living somewhere in Santa Cruz.

Woz, the real Man Behind Apple and It's values

Woz tells the story of his whole life with such candor and believability. You get to know him based on his stories and the way tells them (From the heart). I can honestly say I have a good feeling for who he is as a person, after reading his book.

This is the guy behind Apple, he is the genius behind the Apple and the Apple II. These products were the first that set the trend for Apple's easy-to-use, customer friendly products. Without him, there is no Apple. Period.

Woz doesn't gossip much about Jobs, he does talk about their friendship and business dealings. Woz really stepped back more or less after the Apple II. He truly believed that creating personal computers was an art as much a science. Having taken a digital electronics course, I have some appreciation for what his skills were and he is an incredible man. He had some serious talent for sure. He talks about his whole life, his dealings with Apple are only a part of that. Much of his previous work certainly built up to that and you can see him build up to it. His life story is awesome, this book is a page turner and easy to read.

If you like Apple, autobiographies, little bit of counter-culture, electronics or genuine guy you will love this book.

I was in the time but never met Woz.

I am an engineer and lived through the same time. I even worked for HP for 25 years.
I binge read this book and couldn't put it down because i was connected to the time, the vocation and had some identification and some differences. It was a very personal read.

The book had a strange voice to it. A kind of childish repeating - even literally repeating quality.
The authors concern seems to need to explain in simpler terms some of the technical issues.
I actually would have liked to see the details as I could probably understand them. Perhaps an appendix.

All in all I liked the book and the person and hope some day to meet Woz as I think we share some similarities and differences.

An interesting read.

This book was clearly written by Joe Ezsterhas for Robert Evans ... It reads very similar to Ezsterhas' own memoir Hollywood Animal which was written years later.

It is a very interesting and self excoriating account from Bob Evans' own mouth about how he became one of Hollywood's most influential players ... Ever.

Having known many people who worked with Bob Evans during his time at the top of the Hollywood food chain, this book humanizes him and shows a softer side than you will hear from those who were actually in the trenches which Evans commanded. To say that Evans lived a life of decadence is the mildest of understatements. While the book dishes the dirt ... Some of it reads as though a Public Relations firm put it together to soften the edges of one of the most hedonistic 'carnal-vores' ever to roam The Hollywood Hills.

For fans of 1960s-1970s film, this tells a lot of the stories behind such pictures as Love Story, The Godfather, Chinatown, etc. It does a good job of showing just how many problems a producer has to deal with and includes a bevy of characters such as Dustin Hoffman, Francis Ford Coppola, Warren Beatty, Jack Nicholson, Sidney Korshak and a ton of executives who were once the kings of Hollywood and household names bigger than Coke or Pepsi but now mean nothing to those who weren't there at the time.

Evans may not be as relevant as he was to the scene but the man was responsible for saving Paramount, making some of the best known movies in history and (by his own accounts) bedding some of Tinseltown's top starlets.

This is a page turner. While Evans does tend to self depricate ... I am sure there are other sides to every story. The thing that most surprised me about the book is that while Evans is a shamess self promoter and horn blower, the book doesn't seem to brag as much as I thought it would. Instead it tells the tale of Hollywood excess and the often clichéd, 'Be careful what you wish for as you might actually get it' line.

I can't say that I'd ever want to be married to or related to Bob Evans after reading the book ... But I wouldn't mind him advising my career if even half of the producing stories he tells are accurate.

This is a great read and I'd recommend it to
anyone who even has a remote interest in the inner workings of Hollywood.

He'll Have Lunch In This Town Again

Robert Evans, I had heard about him via the gossip rags all related to one woman or another, nothing positive, mind you. It wasn't until Liz Smith spoke so knowingly of his auto biography that it rang any real interest. The book is twenty years old, and doesn't really ring any bells but it does read well.

He takes us from his birth and young days of a supportive and loving family. He wanted to go to an entertainment high school, but had to settle for a school near the bad side of town to show he could do anything and win. He started as a two bit actor, model, salesman of certain things, meeting the high and the low. The low, including the mobsters are glossed over, but the feel is that they were a lot more involved. His time as an actor in Hollywood sounds like he was the biggest star known, but, of course, not. Maybe some of the drugs inhaled over the years went to the brain. At any point, it sounds like he made it with every actress known to man, and, maybe so.

He names names, his wife, Ali MacGraw, who left him for another man, Phyllis George, another wife who left him, fourteen women in all, all now rich, he attributes to him. Politicos were many, even Henry Kissinger, who interrupted an important political event to be by his side. What did he gave on these guys? It is said he was to be part of Heidi Fleiss's trial for prostitution. It is an interesting portion of the book, but, I think represents exactly his above board ego. He is a great writer, but did he write this all himself?

He was a big man behind the scenes in Hollywood, without him, 'The Godfather' and 'Chinatown' would not have been made. A few stories from those films, but not enough to keep us interested. He gave away a little, but not much, which makes me wonder, if what he has is so big that he could not stay in thus town if revealed. What does come out, is the over powering ego, not to my liking, but, then, this is his book.

True, half true, or invented?

Robert Evans is one of those larger than life characters that the film business produces, a man who insisted upon writing this screenplay in the form of a memoir in which he was the hero of his own life. As you read the text of the scenario, you can't help but wonder how much of this saga is true, half true, or completely invented. I suspect that even the author could not tell you. Nevertheless it makes for a terrific movie. The film's hero, of course,chooses to leave out or minimize some of less sympathetic but well publicized acts of real life, and glamorize others. It is typical of such self-serving stories in which the Hollywood hero admits to being a thoroughly rotten but sexy human being--blame it here on cocaine--that he must also try to convince us that despite his horrendous behavior to everyone around him, he was always the perfect loving father. I wonder what his son thinks.
There is no doubt that when Evans first ran Paramount in the early Bludhorn years he took a chance on many scripts and directors that no one else would touch, and he deservedly takes credit for their great success. However, if you look at a lifetime's batting average, the projects that were truly his, the score is very low. In life unlike the movies, Evans was no more or less a hero or genius than so many others whose inflated egos we meet on these pages. If you'd like another view, perhaps a truer one of what it was really like back then, read Peter Biskind's "Raging Bulls," etc. about the same bunch. Not a very likable group of guys, by and large, and surely not as talented as they all thought they were then, as time has shown, but there's no arguing that once upon a time Evans and his pals did make some very good films along with all the messes they made of things ...people as well as films.
