What a Wonderful Book

Although I'd first heard of Alan Watts' The Book: On the Taboo Against Knowing Who You Are several years ago, it wasn't until I watched Dakota Wint's YouTube video Top 5 Books Every New Spiritual Seeker Needs that I was motivated enough to actually check it out. First things first—I know that I will benefit a lot from re-reading this book several times. It's extremely dense and packed with a lot of valuable information, a lot of which I likely didn't absorb during my first reading of the book.

The basic premise of the book is that we have been told that we are isolated beings, "unconnected to the rest of the universe", which has led to our viewing the "outside" world with hostility and "has fueled our misuse of technology and our violent and hostile subjugation of the natural world". However, Watts asserts that this belief is mistaken and that we are in fact directly connected to everything else there is. In the beginning of the book, Watts discusses the concept of cultural taboos—things like making direct eye contact with another person or performing an act that is against one's religion. This leads him to make the following point:

"The most strongly enforced of all known taboos is the taboo against knowing who or what you really are behind the mask of your apparently separate, independent, and isolated ego."

The concept of "I" is extremely powerful and commonplace in most societies on Earth, and it is so fundamental to our modes of speech and thought, as well as our laws and social institutions. Watts spends many words of this book arguing against the concept of personal selfhood in favor of a more universal concept of identity—one that includes the rest of reality in addition to the components that we would normally judge as "ourselves".

One of the other things I found interesting was Watts' definition of "attention" as "narrowed perception"—because when we attend to one thing, we ignore everything else. In Watts' own words: "conscious attention is at the same time ignore-ance (i.e., ignorance) despite the fact that it gives us a vividly clear picture of whatever we choose to notice."

These are just some of the concepts that Watts describes in The Book. If either of these ideas sound interesting to you, I would definitely give this a read. I wish that this review was able to more fully show how wonderful this book is, but since this is only my first read-through, I feel like I was only able to skim the surface of its ideas and therefore will likely have more to say about it upon successive readings. I definitely give this one two thumbs up though!

This simple book has been one of my Bibles for ...

This simple book has been one of my Bibles for over 50 years. It conveys the essence of Watts' thought and insight which provides a fundamental philosophic grounding wholly compatible with both modern science as well as a spiritual dimension. Though said to be the first to introduce the West to Eastern religion, he really breaks rigid boundaries of religion, inviting the reader to discover a Natural Theology that makes the Universe our home.

Alan Watts and the Mother-Lode of Spirituality

Like a number of the reviewers here, I have a decades-long history with THE BOOK. In my case, it launched a life-long pilgrimage marked by the study of Vedanta, mysticism, and religious philosophy, and a deep existential craving to understand. THE BOOK sparkles with quotable lines on almost every page, some witty, some profound. Watts had discovered the mother-lode of spirituality, Advaita Vedanta, and he expressed it in a form that (literally) children can understand.

The central thesis of THE BOOK can be expressed in a single sentence: "Every individual is an expression of the whole realm of nature, a unique action of the total universe." (p. 9).

From the beginning, Watts insists that what is needed is not "words to live by," but a new sense of self and the world. When confronted by a world it perceives as alien and hostile to itself, the reaction of the empty and impoverished ego is to attack. While our present limited view has led us into a cycle of violence against our environment and each other, the first battle field is intimately personal:

"Our generation knows a cold hell, solitary confinement in this life, without a God to damn or save it. Until man figures out the trap and hunts ... "the Ultimate Ground of Being," he has no reason at all for his existence. Empty, finite, he knows only that he will soon die. Since this life has no meaning, and he sees no future life, he is not really a person but a victim of self-extinction." (p. 17)

The internecine human conflicts Watts has observed and the rapacious resolve to subjugate nature are rooted, not only in the "ego-trick," but in the "dualism" that Vedanta also denies, the conviction that Reality divides neatly into two opposed halves, whether man and nature, life against death, or pure good vs. pure evil. Moreover, rather than see these dualities as poles of a single process, we see within each dyad two bitter enemies of one another. We play "the game of black and white," as Watts calls it, not as a game at all, but as a war. At this writing, the same ancient warfare is being enacted between Republicans and Democrats, and between Moslems and the West. Not content to moderate and "contain" the conflict, each side works to exterminate the other.

From beginning to end, Watts returns again and again, ever more elegantly to restate the original problem:

"The sensation of "I" as a lonely and isolated center of being is so powerful and commonsensical, and so fundamental to our modes of speech and thought, to our laws and social -institutions, that we cannot experience selfhood except as something superficial in the scheme of the universe. I seem to be a brief light that flashes but once in all the aeons of time-- a rare, complicated, and all-too-delicate organism on the fringe of biological evolution, where the wave of life bursts into individual, sparkling, and multicolored drops that gleam for a moment only to vanish forever. Under such conditioning it seems impossible and even absurd to realize that myself does not reside in the drop alone, but in the whole surge of energy which ranges from the galaxies to the nuclear fields in my body." (pp. 12-13)

On the other hand, Watts is eager to disabuse us of the notion that, now we must strive with all our might to realize that this is so. There is an ancient traditional formula that "The One has become many for the sake of reunion through Love." If this is so, the Self is free to awaken or not in its own good time. In the meantime, our adventure will not leave a trace on its original nature.

What then ARE we to do with this astonishing revelation?

"If, then, after understanding, at least in theory, that the ego-trick is a hoax and that, beneath everything, "I" and "universe" are one, you ask, "So what? What is the next step, the practical application?"-- I will answer that the absolutely vital thing is to consolidate your understanding, to become capable of enjoyment, of living in the present, and of the discipline which this involves. Without this you have nothing to give-- to the cause of peace or of racial integration, to starving Hindus and Chinese, or even to your closest friends," (p. 115-116)

I have been cultivating that advice ever since.

Bold and vibrant full color book!

My 10 year old still love these Big Nates book series. He was so excited to get this book today. This book is written in a comic book type format. All pages have bold and vibrant colors that make all the pages pop out. He even loves the pull-out poster that's included in the back of the book. :-)

Purchasing this book was a must for me – even without any idea of what the designs would include. This coloring book depicts a number of scenes from various books, including: “Starting Now”, “The Inn at Rose Harbor”, “Love Letters”, “The World of Debbie Macomber”, Blossom Street Brides”, “Silver Linings”, and “Rose Harbor in Bloom”.

The designs show scenes taken from various quotes. The quote is on the preceding page. No characters are shown but the rooms and houses fit perfectly into what I have always had in my mind's eye for these stories. There are lovely views of the city, harbor, houses, rooms, and even pets. Truly a lovely book of hand-drawn designs. Even if I were not such a fan of Ms. Macomber's work, I would love this coloring book.

Most of the designs are detailed and a few have intricate parts which may be more challenging to color. The majority are much easier to color and most coloring mediums should work fine with coloring the details. For my first project, I am using a variety of markers and coloring pencils.

The designs are by a team of artists, including: Juan Alarcon, Yvonne Gilbert, Mariko Jesse, Olivia Linn, Ben Perini, Paula Pertile, Sonia Pulido, and Monika Roe. You can tell from the varied artwork that more than one hand and imagination was involved. It makes for a more interesting coloring book as it gives you eight artists in one book.

Here is an overview of what I found in the book and during my testing of mediums and coloring in this book:

Printed on one side of white, heavyweight lightly smooth non-perforated page.
Quote of Scene is on the preceding page (back of the previous design page.
Glue Bound
Designs merge into the binding area – if you cut pages out, you will lose portions of the design
Book opens fairly flat if you “break” the spine
Alcohol-based markers bleed through the page.
Water-based markers and India Ink artist pens show shadows on the back of the page.
Gel pens do not bleed through the page but need a little extra drying time.
Coloring pencils work well with this paper; however wax-based pencils do not blend as well as oil-based pencils. Soft lead pencils put down good color and layer well. Hard lead pencils also show good color and do not dent the back of the page.

Given the construction of this book, with the quote on the prior page, I do not plan to remove pages from the book. I'll want to keep the integrity of the format. Because of this, I will use a blotter page under the page I am working on to keep marker ink from marring the page below.

Fun to Color

I am a big Debbie Macomber fan and an avid colorist so it took me not two seconds to decide to buy this book. I love a lot of the pages and will probably color several of them. I am glad they are one sided pages, but they are NOT perforated. As I use alcohol markers I prefer to remove the pages because of bleed through. I did put a piece of cardstock behind this page before I started but it moved a bit and I ruined the next page. Also it is easier to color the inside edge. I decided to remove the next page I wanted to work on, but it didn't rip out cleanly and I had to trim the left side down.

Awesome book!

I was unfamiliar with Debbie Macomber until I got this coloring book so I wasn't entirely sure what to expect. I was so happy to get this because it's one of the few coloring books I've found that aren't Mandalas, floral, geometric, or weirdly patterned animals lol. I have been coloring as a hobby since high school so I'm no stranger to "adult coloring books" and after a while the same themes get old. This book has so many refreshing images. I love the yarn ones and the ones where I can color furniture. I really wish they made more books like this, I'm about halfway through this one and I'll be buying another I'm sure haha! Some of the picture are kind of spacey, as in they have a lot of space that's really only for one color (lakes and such) and then some are super compact and full of stuff (like the yarn shop page) so there's a great variety of coloring levels, some I can do in 20 minutes and others take a full day. The only slight downfall would be the super smooth paper, some of my Prismacolors don't come out as vibrant as they do on paper with tooth but it a sacrific I'll take in exchange for an awesome book.

About the Author

Raymond A. Barnett, a native of California, received his B.A. in mathematical statistics from the University of California at Berkeley and his M.A. in mathematics from the University of Southern California. He has been a member of the Merritt College Mathematics Department, and was chairman of the department for four years. Raymond Barnett has authored or co-authored eighteen textbooks in mathematics, most of which are still in use. In addition to international English editions, a number of books have been translated into Spanish.

 

Michael R. Ziegler (late) received his B.S. from Shippensburg State College and his M.S. and Ph.D. from the University of Delaware. After completing post doctoral work at the University of Kentucky, he was appointed to the faculty of Marquette University where he held the rank of Professor in the Department of Mathematics, Statistics, and Computer Science. Dr. Ziegler published over a dozen research articles in complex analysis and co-authored eleven undergraduate mathematics textbooks with Raymond A. Barnett, and more recently, Karl E. Byleen.

 

Karl E. Byleen received his B.S., M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in mathematics from the University of Nebraska. He is currently an Associate Professor in the Department of Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science of Marquette University. He has published a dozen research articles on the algebraic theory of semigroups.

If you can avoid do it!

Terrible. These authors seem to know calculus well, however, they lack the ability to communicate through their writing! My class used this book and if I read through the chapter I would become even more confused than I already was.

About the Author

D. Gordon E. Robertson, PhD, an emeritus professor and a fellow of the Canadian Society for Biomechanics, wrote Introduction to Biomechanics for Human Motion Analysis. He taught undergraduate- and graduate-level biomechanics at the University of Ottawa and previously at the University of British Columbia, Canada. He conducts research on human locomotion and athletic activities and authors the analogue data analysis software BioProc3.

Graham E. Caldwell, PhD, an associate professor and a fellow of the Canadian Society for Biomechanics, teaches undergraduate- and graduate-level biomechanics at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst and previously held a similar faculty position at the University of Maryland. He won the Canadian Society for Biomechanics New Investigator Award and in 1998 won the Outstanding Teacher Award for the School of Public Health and Health Sciences at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. He served as an associate editor for Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise.

Joseph Hamill, PhD, is a professor and fellow of the Research Consortium, International Society of Biomechanics in Sports, Canadian Society for Biomechanics, American College of Sports Medicine, and National Academy of Kinesiology. He coauthored the popular undergraduate textbook Biomechanical Basis of Human Movement. He teaches undergraduate- and graduate-level biomechanics and is director of the Biomechanics Laboratory at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. He serves on the editorial boards of several prestigious professional journals. He is adjunct professor at the University of Edinburgh in Scotland and the University of Limerick in Ireland and a distinguished research professor at Republic Polytechnic in Singapore.

Gary Kamen, PhD, is a professor and fellow of the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance; American College of Sports Medicine; and National Academy of Kinesiology. He authored an undergraduate textbook on kinesiology, Foundations of Exercise Science, as well as a primer on electromyography, Essentials of Electromyography.�He was president of the Research Consortium of AAPHERD and teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in exercise neuroscience and motor control in the department of kinesiology at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst.

Saunders (Sandy) N. Whittlesey, PhD, a graduate of the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, is a self-employed technology consultant specializing in athletic training, sporting goods, and clinical applications.

Norma Coffey, PhD, a postdoctoral researcher in statistics at the National University of Ireland at Galway, has expertise is functional data analysis and worked extensively with the Biomechanics Research Unit at the University of Limerick. Her current area of research involves applying functional data analysis techniques to time-course gene expression data.

Timothy R. Derrick, PhD, a professor in the department of kinesiology at Iowa State University, has an extensive background in signal processing and conducts research on impacts to the human body particularly from the ground during running activities.

Kevin Deluzio, PhD, is a professor in the department of mechanical and materials engineering at Queen's University in Kingston, Canada, and held a similar position at Dalhousie University. He studies human locomotion to investigate the biomechanical factors of musculoskeletal diseases such as knee osteoarthritis. He is also interested in the design and evaluation of noninvasive therapies as well as surgical treatments such as total-knee replacement.

Andrew (Drew) J. Harrison, PhD, is a senior lecturer in biomechanics in the department of physical education and sport sciences at the University of Limerick in Ireland and a fellow of the International Society for Biomechanics in Sport. He is the director of the Biomechanics Research Unit at the University of Limerick. His research focuses on biomechanics of sport performance and sport injuries.

Thomas M. Kepple, PhD, is an instructor in the department of health, nutrition, and exercise sciences at the University of Delaware. He worked for many years as a biomechanist at the National Institutes of Health on motion capture technology and gait laboratory instrumentation.

Ross H. Miller, PhD, an assistant professor in the department of kinesiology at the University of Maryland, has published papers on static optimization and forward dynamics as well as methods on nonlinear techniques of data analysis.

Scott Selbie, PhD, is an adjunct professor at Queen's University, Canada, and at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. He is a graduate of Simon Fraser University, Canada. He is the director of research at C-Motion, developers of the Visual3D software, and president of HAS-Motion in Canada.

Brian R. Umberger, PhD, is an associate professor teaching biomechanics at the undergraduate and graduate levels in the department of kinesiology at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. In 2010, he received the Outstanding Teacher Award for the School of Public Health and Health Sciences at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. In his research, he uses a combination of experimental, modeling, and simulation approaches to study the biomechanics and energetics of human locomotion.

Richard E.A. van Emmerik, PhD, is a professor in the kinesiology department at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, where he teaches motor control at the undergraduate and graduate levels. In his research, he applies principles from complex and nonlinear dynamical systems to the study of posture and locomotion.
