About the Author
Born in a small town in Ohio, MARY OLIVER published her first book of poetry in 1963 at the age of twenty-eight. Over the course of her long career, she has received numerous awards. Her fourth book, American Primitive, won the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry in 1984. She has led workshops and held residencies at various colleges and universities, including Bennington College, where she held the Catharine Osgood Foster Chair for Distinguished Teaching. Oliver currently lives in Provincetown, Massachusetts.

The first time Percy came back
he was not sailing on a cloud.
He was loping along the sand as though
he had come a great way.
“Percy,” I cried out, and reached to him—

“Yes, it’s all different,” he said.
“You’re going to be very surprised.”
But I wasn’t thinking of that. I only
wanted to hold him. “Listen,” he said.
“I miss that too.

and they won’t be false, and they won’t be true,

Woof & Words: A Master Muse on Dog's, Impermance, Love, and Loss

My wife lovvvvves dogs--and not just our dog (though he gets special royalty status)--AND Mary Oliver. So when I bumped into this book, I knew I had to get it for her right away. And she's delighted with the book. Even I (also a lover of dogs--though less appreciative of poetry) was charmed--and more important--touched by MO's words and the poems in this slim volume (which include both previously published and new works).

Mary Oliver is actually one of the few poets who does move me--and obviously I'm not alone. Probably some experts and academics will scoff, but to me she has both a delicacy and down-to-earth quality that offer grace so even someone like myself, who might be a bit tone deaf to the mystery and romance of more obscure works, really sees/listens (

Good for problem solving, not so much conceptual.

Firstly, I'll agree with other reviewers that the book has a very clear style and is very helpful learning how to do thermo calculations.
Most chapters have a few section on concepts and the rest of the chapter is examples. The examples are very clear and after reading through them I was able to do our assigned problems without any problems.

My major issue is with the book's lack of conceptual explanation. It explains concepts in a formulaic fashion. I.e. it gives a formula and explains how to use it and supplies just enough concepts to be able to use the formulas. Take for example chapter 3 where it introduces the first major/complicated concept of the relations between specific volume, T and pressure. All it does is give the graph and than analyzes the graph. Sure it explains very well the relations and how to use them, but there is almost no explanation given as to why they are the way they are.

I'll say again, if you want to be able to do the thermo analyzation and calculation this is a really great book. But, if you want understand why things are the way they are, you'll have to find another more theoretical book.

Great Book, lacks good solutions

This is a great (and iconic) book on Thermodynamics. As a student in Mechanical Engineering, I am sure that what I have learned from my Thermodynamics class (and this book, by extension) will be useful. Now, to get into the book:

1. The concepts and theory in this book are expressed in simple language that doesn't require a masters degree to understand.

2. There are many examples and are clearly solved without skipping steps, in both metric and English units. I'm not a huge fan of using English units, but this book goes through the conversion factors (the hardest part) quite clearly and keeps units on all values to make following the examples relatively pain-free.

3. There are a variety of homework problems (usually over 125 per chapter) in both metric and English units. Usually the problems come in pairs; the first problem of a pair will have metric units while the second problem uses English units. As in most texts, the problems get progressively harder, but there are so many problems, that the transition is slow. If you can't figure out, say, problem 8.91, try a problem before it. Usually this will lead you to the correct method of solving 8.91.

4. The only major flaw (and to me, it's a pretty big one), is the lack of answers in the back of the book. There are none in the back of the book, however there are *some* on the book's webpage. Unfortunately, there are only a small fraction of the answers located on the official webpage. TIP: If you look very hard on the internet, there are methods to find worked out solutions.

5. Just before each set of problems at the end of the chapter, there are tables of equations, with explanations of the situations in which to use them. This is really useful when doing the homework or studying.

6. At the end of the book, there are many, many, many tables with thermodynamic data for liquids and gasses, in both English and metric units. There are indexed at the beginning of each appendix which makes it really easy to find the table you're looking for.

Great book

This is a very good text book, it is well written and keeps it short and sweet. It gets to the point. One great feature is that it boxes in derivations that are not nessacary to understand, this way you don't get bogged down in a lot of text. There are tons of examples in the book and no mistakes that I could find. You really can read and understand everything from the text, you don't really need a teacher, which is saying alot, because most books are impossible to read and figure out what's going on. I agree the bio part is worthless, but Moran is obviously into that stuff because he always mentioned it in class. It's really not a bad thing...just skip it, who cares if it's in there. Overall if you want a good thermo book, whether it's self taught or in a class, it's a good choice.

Even Better Than The First

I adored the first book, so I had high hopes for this one. I mean, really, really high hopes. I arranged my entire week around reading it so that once I started, I wouldn't have to put it down.

This is always a dangerous endeavor, because if the book turns out to be less good than I hoped, I'm deeply disappointed.

As you can guess by the title of this review, quite the opposite occurred.

In my opinion, Galbraith's greatest strength is the ability to build believable, unique characters who are realistic and have distinct speaking styles. Well, that and stunningly good prose.

It isn't necessary to read The Cuckoo's Calling first, but I think it's a good idea. This book begins a few months after the last one left off, and the relationships have progressed accordingly. There aren't particular heroes or villains, just real people who are good and bad, kind and mean, ugly and pretty -- where none of those three things necessarily correspond to any of the others.

In any case, Strike and Robin are going about their normal business, with all the usual small misunderstandings and unexpected skills, etc. that go along with most working relationships. Then, when Strike is exhausted and not thinking clearly, he takes on a new client, a rather worn-looking middle-aged woman who wants him to find her husband and thinks it'll be a short, simple job, and she's sure someone else will pay his bill.

Ah hah. Sure that's how it's going to work.

And so our story kicks off.

Oh, I should add -- I am a professional editor and a very prolific reader. Of the dozens of new books I've read so far this year, this is the best.

I love J.K. Rowling's beautiful command of the language, the pictures she paints and the way she weaves the plot of a story; I love Cormoran and Robin and how their relationship builds and matures. I didn't love the story. I found it tedious and by the time it ended, I really didn't care "whodunnit".

Comes to a grinding halt halfway through

My biggest issue with the first Strike book was that it was too long and too slow. The second Strike book fixed one of those issues. Being 100 pages shorter really helped with the pacing early on but nearly halfway through, The book comes to a grinding halt and becomes another slow and tough to finish read. This isn't an insult to the characters or the plot. It just gets boring and it's tough to read more than a few pages at a time before getting sick of it.

I do love how Rowling gave Strike and Robin much more development in this book. A good chunk of the book is about their relationship and Robin wanting to be more than a simple assistant. We also see more backstory about the two characters' past and social lives. The plot was kind of predictable, Not to the point where you knew what was gonna happen but it was pretty easy to eliminate a good handful of suspects early on. A few typical mystery novel tropes are followed but again that doesn't stop it from being interesting plot wise.

Overall, It's not a terrible book. If you could finish the first then you should have no issue finishing this one. It's not for everybody though. IDK why but Rowling's pacing issue always hits her half way into the book and it just ruins it a bit.

If you are using it for the NBME exams you're probably better off using Case Files instead

It is a bit lengthy. If you are using it for the NBME exams you're probably better off using Case Files instead. I worked 8-6 in my rotation and didn't have a great amount of time to study so I was not able to get through this book completely. Case files does a much better job in pointing out the important things.

Great for quick clinical reference!

Each chapter is very short and gives you a brief overview of every aspect of the given topic (pathophys., treatment. Etc.). This series assumes that you know lots about these topics before you open the book, so it may mention something that you haven't heard or thought about in a very long time with no refresher information at all. Good quick reference book. Don't use this as a primary source for learning!

Bradley R. Schiller has over four decades of experience teaching introductory economics at American University, the University of California (Berkeley and Santa Cruz), the University of Maryland, and the University of Nevada (Reno). He has given guest lectures at more than 300 colleges ranging from Fresno, California, to Istanbul, Turkey. Dr. Schiller's unique contribution to teaching is his ability to relate basic principles to current socioeconomic problems, institutions, and public policy decisions. This perspective is evident throughout Essentials of Economics. Dr. Schiller derives this policy focus from his extensive experience as a Washington consultant. He has been a consultant to most major federal agencies, many congressional committees, and political candidates. In addition, he has evaluated scores of government programs and helped design others. His studies of income inequality, poverty, discrimination, training programs, tax reform, pensions, welfare, Social Security, and lifetime wage patterns have appeared in both professional journals and popular media. Dr. Schiller is also a frequent commentator on economic policy for television, radio, and newspapers. Dr. Schiller received his PhD from Harvard and his BA degree, with great distinction, from the University of California (Berkeley). When not teaching, writing, or consulting, Professor Schiller is typically on a tennis court, schussing down a ski slope, or enjoying the crystal blue waters of Lake Tahoe.

Does NOT come with access code

After paying $20 more for the Kindle edition than my school bookstore would charge for the dead-tree edition, I was dismayed to find no Connect code -- which I will now have to purchase separately at a substantial price.

This whole Kindle thing is bad economics. I don't need to open the book to see that.

Not impressed....

The Connect has multiple grammar, spelling and function errors. Connect is not intended for use on a laptop; you end up missing a lot of content on Smartbook. In parts, you will question if the system developers collaborated with the writers when developing the questions. Some of the assignments for my course require you to watch a YouTube video, which has little to no relevance and add no value. They used a South Park clip with I found to be EXTREMELY offensive.

The text itself is easy to read but in parts is difficult to understand. The vocabulary found in course work is not the same as what is used in the text, which requires you to do extra research to know what the questions are asking. When you go through Smartbook on Connect, you can see where the publisher has corrected/editted the text. When you are paying $200 for a text, shouldn't they have taken the time to edit it?!?!?
