About the Author
Kari Dunn Buron taught in K-12 with students on the autism spectrum for 30+ years. She developed an Autism Spectrum Disorders Certificate program for educators at Hamline University in St. Paul, MN and has done volunteer work specific to autism in Trinidad, Tobago, Barbados, Tanzania and Ghana. In 2003, Kari received a Self-designed Bush Leadership Fellowship that allowed her to spend a year interviewing and working internationally with a number of scientists and researchers in the area of Social Cognition, Education and Autism with a focus on challenging behaviors. Kari is the co-author of The Incredible 5-Point Scale, and the author of When My Worries Get Too Big, A 5 Could Make Me Lose Control and A 5 is Against the Law! (2008 ASA literary award winner). Kari is the co-editor of a textbook for educators titled Learners on the Autism Spectrum: Preparing Highly Qualified Educators (2009 ASA literary award winner) and is the creator of an original social skills magazine designed for students with Asperger Syndrome called The Social Times (2010 Gold Winner, National Parenting Publications Award and Gold Medal Winner Moonbeam Children s Book Awards). Mitzi Beth Curtis, MsEd, is an autism resource specialist currently working for Intermediate School District 287 in Minnesota and is consulting with Minnesota Life College. She has worked in special education, supported employment and residential programs for individuals with disabilities since 1978. Her youngest sister, Maria, sent her on this journey with her birth in 1963.

Disappointed

I bought this because it advertised free blank scales. There are none in the book, and there was no CD included with my book. There are none available for free online, and I don't feel like paying a download fee for a scale when that was the reason I purchased this book. I'm frustrated. Like a good 3 on the 5 point scale.

Great tool to use as a therapist

Great tool to use as a therapist. The book presents many different ways to use the 5-point scale: for a child who is aggressive, anxious, etc. My favorite use of the tool is to use a 5-point scale for kids to identify their behaviors at each level 1-5 (e.g., 5 = out of control; hitting, kicking, biting, spitting); next column is for "What I can do" and the final column is for the parent to work out their strategies ("What my mom/dad can do").

Great for me, here's how I dealt with two hiccups

I think this is a great little course. People are saying it's too hard or gets too hard too quickly but maybe it's just not all walk in the park.

I had two problems, which were reading chords and knowing when to move on to the next page/exercise/piece.

Chords are hard to read for guitar. The best thing I ever did was make up some note cards and memorize them by rote. Every time a new form popped up in the beginning of the book I just added it to the stack. After you memorize the natural chords, the sharps and flats bake them even easier to see.

The other thing was that I often didn't feel comfortable moving on to the next thing. Often I moved on to the next bit purely from the boredom of reviewing it for the hundredth time. Just keep going. If you work at it daily and get about 80% of it right (dare I say even somewheres around 65%?) then that'll yield massive results compared to doing it like every other day but playing everything perfectly. The hardcore would say why not get it 100% every day? Because you'll usually already know or know of the song you're reading, and the feel, mood and rhythm come most clearly after actually playing it anyways. You just don't need to be a reading wiz kid to get what you need from reading (which is to be able to have immediate access to a new piece of music via paper media). You just need to be able to sight read.

Good book(s), but not for everybody....

Like many of the other reviews have stated:

* This is a big book, consisting of 3 separate books. Over 400 pages.
* These books are older, I believe from the mid 1980's.
* These books are all in standard notation
* There really is no instruction, just notation and chords.
* These look to be the accompanying books that are used with the Berklee Guitar program.

All that being said, it looks to be a good book for an intermediate guitar player or someone who has avoided learning standard notation but now realizes it is a critical skill.

I would only recommend it for a beginner if they have a teacher who will be teaching from it.

My guitar teacher, a professional guitarist of right now, recommended this book. I've seen many books before, but this is not only comprehensive, but it is a wonderful example of how to build and expand on previous lessons. It's a really good study guide for someone teaching themselves without a teacher. I would highly recommend it

Impenetrable hot mess

I thought surely other reviewers were exaggerating, but no. Every bit as unnecessarily over-the-top wordy as other reviewers say. The new preface even addresses this criticism of its "strange and maddening" style. Yes, Dr. Butler, to aswer your question, we readers "who are offended [are, indeed] making a legitimate request for 'plain speaking,'" one that stems not from a "consumer expectation of intellectual life," but a simple wish to get some meaning, any meaning, from your over long sentences this one attempts to rival in its complexity and pretentious opacity. Foucault and de Beauvoir are more accessible.

Lacks Substance

I had trouble getting through this book. It's so theoretical and jargon-filled that it didn't accomplish much for me. I was hoping for something more grounded in history and concrete reality like Foucault, but this book is completely devoid of data behind the philosophical ponderings.

Good basic book for gender & queer theory

Butler gets a lot of flak for being a dense writer, and has "won" some award for being the most indecipherable to read; it's a lot of hype. She is not easily accessible but with some work you can get at it. This isn't the place for a full on analysis, review & such, that you can find elsewhere alongside critiques. Bottom-line if you're interested in postmodern/poststructural approaches in a gender/queer theory discourse this is a good book to read.

About the Author

Jacqueline Winspear is the author of the New York Times bestselling Maisie Dobbs series, which includes In This Grave Hour, Journey to Munich, A Dangerous Place, Leaving Everything Most Loved, Elegy for Eddie, and eight other novels. Maisie Dobbs continues to be a unique and well-rounded heroine in this much-loved series.

With her Maisie Dobbs series, Jacqueline Winspear has created a heroine and a story line that is uniquely her own.

Maisie is not your average "girl sleuth."
She has the courage to speak her mind along with impeccable manners; a no-nonsense woman who is also witty and compassionate.
I really appreciate that Maisie's compassion comes across as genuine and sugar-free.
Her intuitive take on everyone and everything around her is spot on: As I see Maisie, she is the poster child for cognitive thinking.
No one bests Maisie...other than her dad, as you will see in this 13th story in the life of Maisie Dobbs.

This book begins with a radio announcement at 11:15 am, September 3rd, 1939.
Nevile Chamberlain, the Prime Minister of Britain, announces that England is now at war with Germany.

Throughout the book, we read many authentic details of England's preparations for all-out war. Every citizen is given a gas mask and expected to have it with them at all times. The full blacking out of windows at night is rigidly enforced. The strange "barrage balloons" loom over London, a highly visible and ominous reminder that a new kind of war is under way.

Maisie, who has recently returned from grief-stricken wanderings abroad, reopens her business as "Psychologist and Investigator" of her own detective agency. She is approached by a member of the Belgian Embassy and asked to investigate the murder of a man who had been a refugee from Belgium in the first World War.
As Maisie sets about solving the case, more murders occur, all seeming to point to a common denominator involving a group of Belgian refugees who fled from Belgium to England during WWI.

In the meantime, Maisie becomes involved with a little girl who was evacuated, along with many other children, from London to Kent in the hopes of protecting them from the worst of the bombings sure to come.
Among the children are little Anna, who has no papers with her to explain who she is or where she is from. The child has with her only her gas mask and a little case she will not let out of her sight.
Anna cannot or will not speak a single word.

Although "In This Grave Hour" is a well-tuned mystery novel, it is also a much different story as well; one about the triumph of love and compassion over seemingly unbearable anger and heartache.

While this book can be read and enjoyed out of sequence, each book is a continuation of the one before, in the course of Maisie's life.
I recommend starting with book one: "Maisie Dobbs," if you like to start "at the beginning."

All of the books in this series are peppered with well-researched facts and tidbits about the era. Some of these provide just enough "cozy" to make things interesting to those who enjoy such details. But Winspear's books are far more than "cozies."
They are well-written mysteries, and, in my opinion, excellent literature.

Maise Dobbs will battle fo get her man

I first became interested in Maise Dobbs because she was a nurse in the first book. And being a nurse I'm always interested in how nursing was during different periods of time. Then she progressed to an investigator and psychiatrist...Would I enjoy stories of that nature? Oh, my, yes! I can't get enough of the stories of Maise Dobbs.

I am somewhat concerned that I hadn't read anything of Maise being in the civil war in Spain. I think that would make for a delicious tale! And especially if some romance for Maise was involved. She can't keep mourning for James, I hope. And, I hope a future book includes Anna living with Maise...Giving Maise a family of her own....A child to love and grow with...A grandchild for Frankie Dobbs. Wouldn't it be loverly?

Highly Enjoyable Story Set in an Interesting Period

Having read all of the previous Maisie Dobbs books, I found this one to be as excellent as the others. The characters are credible, the descriptions thoughtful, but best of all, the background is interesting and brings to life a period about which I knew almost nothing. The novel depicts the lives of ordinary Londoners in the 1939 lead-up to WWII, when gas masks were carried everywhere, blackout curtains couldn't reveal even a sliver of light, and children were evacuated to the countryside. The plot is compelling, though the resolution requires a bit of a willing suspension of disbelief. Still, I never saw the outcome coming. A subplot involving a little girl who was a London evacuee living with Maisie's father and stepmother was enchanting and drew me in. I hated to put the book aside when real life interfered, and I could hardly wait to return to Maisie and her adventures. All in all, a satisfying read that I would highly recommend.

Although I think that animal husbandry is wrong,
my friend recommended this book to me. After reading it, I have to admit that it's a pretty good book, and is reasonably priced. There are a lot of good ideas about animal husbandry contained in this book.
Also, I like how this book looks at animal husbandry from a science perspective.

Nevertheless, I still think that animal husbandry is wrong.

Andy Crouch (MDiv, Boston University School of Theology) is executive editor of Christianity Today and the author of books such as Culture Making and Playing God. Andy serves on the governing boards of Fuller Theological Seminary and Equitas Group, a philanthropic organization focused on ending child exploitation in Haiti and Southeast Asia. He is also a senior fellow of International Justice Mission’s Institute for Biblical Justice. His writing has appeared in Time, the Wall Street Journal and several editions of Best Christian Writing and Best Spiritual Writing. Crouch served as executive producer for the documentary films Where Faith and Culture Meet and Round Trip, as well as the multi-year project This Is Our City, which featured documentary video, reporting and essays about Christians seeking the flourishing of their cities. He also sits on the editorial board for Books & Culture and was editor-in-chief of re:generation quarterly. He also spent ten years as a campus minister with InterVarsity Christian Fellowship at Harvard University. A classically trained musician who draws on pop, folk, rock, jazz and gospel, Crouch has led musical worship for congregations of five to twenty thousand. He lives with his family in Swarthmore, Pennsylvania.

Superb expository on power

I have been waiting for a book like “Playing God” by Andy Crouch for years now, since I got more serious about reading (and applying what I read). There really is not a lot out there on Christian non-fiction related to the notion of “power”. It’s discussed somewhat in philosophy circles and even some theological circles, but even then it is under the umbrella of discussions around politics, economics, or social justice. All that is well and good, Crouch would say, but where is God in the midst of it and what do normal, everyday Christians, do with any of that?
In his book, Crouch offers an excellent portrayal and exposition of key narratives and events in the Bible within the meta-narrative scope of human history and experience. He also reflects deeply, yet with pristine precision of making sure his reading audience “gets it” a thought provoking and powerful (pardon the pun) discussion of power – its misuse and we can get regain or use it once more for good. Each chapter builds on its predecessor, with a common theme going through that of “idolatry and injustice”. This, argues Crouch, is at the core of what is really going on here. Why is it that “institutions” misuse their power? Idolatry and injustice. Why do some instigate violence as a means of power? Idolatry and injustice. Why do some use their privilege (which is not inherently evil) for evil instead of good? Idolatry and injustice.
The book talks about relatively “heady” objects of discourse, but in insightful and transparent ways – often times Crouch brings in personal examples in his life, which is always a good way to grab a reader’s interest (words without actions are just words). The climax of the book is toward the end with an exposition of “Sabbath” and its coattails of discussing “gleaning”, “jubilee” and even “sabbatical”. It’s refreshing in a book like this that even while one can get frustrated at “the world” for being the way it is (and not installing an economic system of jubilee for example), it is also encouraging that the Christian can understand all of this in the grand crescendo of eschatology (end times). Satan’s temptation to “be like God” in the beginning will only run its course for so long until we celebrate and worship our benevolent King near the flourishing Tree of Life.
My only critique, if you want to call it that even, is that I think more attention could be spent discussing the “principalities and powers” that one finds in other exhortations on power; such as that of Walter Wink’s trilogy of books examining that very subject. “Principalities and powers” are only alluded to briefly by Crouch. Personally, I would have loved to see such a sharp and applicable thinker like Crouch discuss this concept more. Apart from that, this book filled in a lot of gaps in my thinking about this matter. I find it extremely pragmatic for the everyday layman who also seeks to fill in those same gaps. I will be giving away copies of this book to friends for Christmas with a note to say: If you apply elements of this book into your business and ministry life, you will fail in the eyes of the world but succeed for eternity in the eyes of our Lord.

An apt subtitle: "Redeeming the Gift of Power"

“Power is a gift.” So begins Andy Crouch’s latest book, Playing God: Redeeming the Gift of Power. What follows is certainly the most comprehensive , thoughtful, and imaginative meditation on power I’ve ever read. Crouch’s first book, Culture Making, remains one of my favorite books of the last 10 years, so it comes as no surprise that I enjoyed Playing God as much as I did.

My original temptation was to summarize the book as a theology of power, but to do so would be to misread Crouch entirely. Playing God is theological, but it’s also social, cultural, historical, economical, political, practical, relational, and so on. In other words, the book considers what the Bible has to say about power, but it does not stop there.

Crouch wants to share with us a robust vision of who God is, who God made us to be, and how we might better pursue the flourishing of God’s creatures and creation.

And what does that pursuit look like? Playing God invites us to forsake our god-making and god-playing in favor of true image-bearing. To be image bearers, as Crouch so masterfully articulates, is to be empowered by the Spirit of God toward lives of grace, justice, creativity, community, humility, wisdom, and worship.

This book will open your eyes to the power that both surrounds and indwells us. Watch the news and you’ll see power used and abused. Review your checking account activity or your calendar and you’ll see traces of god-making, god-playing, and image-bearing. Step inside what Crouch calls an “arena” — maybe a mall, a stadium, a church, or a school — and you’ll hear the hum of power above the din of the crowd.

Read this book, not because you’re hungry for power, but because you’re hungry for redemption of the power you already possess.

We all have power, whether more or less, and how we use it matters

I have been looking forward to this book for a while. Andy Crouch's book Culture Making: Recovering Our Creative Calling was an excellent look at why it is important to be making culture that reflects God.

Playing God seems like a natural follow up to Culture Making. Playing God starts with the simple (and somewhat controversial idea) that power can be used for good or bad, but we all have it, and we all need to think about how to use it to God's glory.

Christians have a mixed view of power. People with power have often used it poorly. So some Christians suggest that power and use of power is sinful But rarely do these Christians complain about either God's power, or of the positive uses of power that are all around us.

For Crouch the highest power is creation. God created us and expressed his power in the world. We, as images of God, also have the ability to create and through creation we give to others.

To over-simplify Crouch's argument, the difference between good and bad use of power comes down to whether that power is used to strengthen others or yourself.

This is a wide ranging book and hard to review in a few words. Crouch talks about everything from Nietzsche to Jesus' parables to his own exercise in learning to play the Cello as an adult to a good look at the necessary power of institutions.

He does not stay with easy topics, the role of privilege and unearned power and the unreflective use of power is probably the most important thing for many Christians that are unused to thinking about power to read.

I highly recommend this book and think it is probably the most important book I have read this year.
