About the Author
The late James Stewart received his M.S. from Stanford University and his Ph.D. from the University of Toronto. He did research at the University of London and was influenced by the famous mathematician George Polya at Stanford University. Stewart was most recently Professor of Mathematics at McMaster University, and his research field was harmonic analysis. Stewart was the author of a best-selling calculus textbook series published by Cengage Learning, including CALCULUS, CALCULUS: EARLY TRANSCENDENTALS, and CALCULUS: CONCEPTS AND CONTEXTS, as well as a series of precalculus texts.

A Complete Calculus Book for $25!

I was looking for a good Calculus book to add to my library and noticed this one on Amazon for only $25 so I purchased it.

This book covers a three semester college Calculus sequence for math and science majors. The prerequisites for this book are 4 years of high school mathematic including Algebra 1, Geometry, Algebra 2, and College Algebra/Trigonometry. Good grades in high school math and thorough understanding of algebra, geometry, and trigonometry are essential in one's success in completing and understanding Calculus. The reason I mention this is because Calculus is a much more difficult subject, the learning is steep, and you use everything you learned in high school math from that point on.

Stewart's book has a wealth of problems and examples covering the following topics: real numbers, inequalities, limits, functions, differentiation of algebraic and transcendental functions, the chain rule for differentiation, max/min problems, integration of (polynomial, exponential, trigonometric functions, techniques of integration), L'Hospital's rule, improper integrals, infinite series, parametrization of curves/surfaces, vectors, partial derivatives, multiple integrals, introduction to differential equations, and more. Answers to some of the exercises are provided in the back of the book.

It is uncommon to find a Calculus book this good for the low price. Good luck in your math endeavors!

Second review now that I have learned some Calculus

Originally I thought this was one of the worst introductory Calculus texts ever written and this was after using Stewart's Precalculus
text which I thought was very well written and accessible to the target audience. I have now worked my way up to Differential Equations and Linear Algebra all totally on my own - no professors, classmates, lectures, etc. I mention this because my progress
has only to do with me and my textbook(s).
Most of the criticisms that I have of the textbooks I have seen still stand - they are poorly written for the target audience. However,
now that I have a more advanced perspective I can see that a lot of the published criticisms are the sour grapes resulting from
poor precalculus preparation, low motivation to study mathematics, poor writing and teaching, etc.
Having my experience let me now tell you how to learn Calculus:
1) Get real good at Algebra and Precalculus.
2) Use textbooks by Stewart, Larson and Edwards, Michael Sullivan, Thomas and Finney,
3) Do problems until your eyes are falling out of your head.
4) Write extensive notes and then ask yourself could someone learn Calculus with only these notes. If the answer is no throw them
away and rewrite them.
5) Use the Internet - you cannot imagine how many websites there are for all mathematics at any leve.
Finally, Dr.Stewart I apologize for the very badly inaccurate review I gave your book - it is not the easiest book for a beginner in
Calculus but it is accessible and good good preparation for DE's and Linear Algebra.

Handy option for people needing one of the Stewart Calculus volumes

Well its a textbook. I needed Vol 2 for school but it was allot more expensive and this includes the calc 3 chapters so I went for this. The obvious drawback is the thickness and weight of the book. I usually leave it at home because its a pain to carry. Still I was able to get a good used copy of this for 20 dollars which in my mind is a real bargain.

A side note for people who may be "needing" the 8th edition. From what I have seen 6, 7, 8 have the exact same questions in the same order if you go by topic. In other words, you can probably get away with using this version without any trouble.

An entire chapter was missing.--unacceptable in a textbook needed for a student. Amazon sent a second copy with the same problem.

Great chemistry book!

Haven't taken a chemistry class since barely passing high school chem 8 years ago. This book helped me reintroduce myself into chemistry and really understand that its not a scary "madman's science". I essentially taught myself with this book (my professor's teaching style and I didn't quite click) and I passed with a solid A.

A very worthy sequel

The Reckoners Trilogy is one which I was initially skeptical of. Despite being recommended to me by literally dozens of fans, I didn't know if it would be my cup of tea. I'm a fairly big fan of the idea that superhuman powers would be a net-positive to the world and tend to be on the idealistic end of things despite being a fan of edgy antiheroes. The Reckoners Trilogy is based around the concept of a world which has been devastated by evil superhumans, so it's one which you'd think was fairly cynical, right?

The first novel, Steelheart, was anything but. Despite the fact it is in a post-apocalypse world where the only remains of human civilization are all controlled by tyrants, I found it to be surprisingly light-hearted and hopeful. The fact it was about a plucky resistance (the Reckoners) against an evil overlord made it closer to Star Wars than Watchmen. I also found out its depiction of superhumans was a lot more nuanced than I initially suspected. The fact the book was genuinely fun helped it as well, so much so that I picked up the second novel as soon as I finished the first.

Firefight picks up not long after the events of Steelheart with the Reckoners having eliminated the city's former overlord as well as re-established human-run civilization. Unfortunately, they can't capitalize on the momentum because they're under siege by a near-endless number of Epics seeking to claim Steelheart's former territory as well as make a name for themselves by eliminating his killers. Things get worse when they attempt to target the city of New York, only to find themselves in over their heads against a water-bending mastermind and a religious-obsessed exploding demigod.

I've got to say I really enjoyed this book all round. It does what a sequel should in that it doesn't repeat what the original book did, expands on the concepts of the first book, allows for character growth, and shows us new material in the same world. Particularly interesting is the expansion of the Professor's background as well as details about the early days of the Calamity.

Brandon Sanderson is an amazing world-builder who certainly details elements of his world which would have eluded other writers. Indeed, it is his greatest strength that he can create unique and memorable locations which are internally consistent. The water city replacing New York is different in culture, environment, and atmosphere to Newcago. I liked the idea the people are more or less resigned to the Epics in New York and generally spend all of their lives partying because their masters keep them fed out of hand.

The villains of Regalia and Obliteration are excellent foils with a lot more development than the late Steelheart. Regalia is a woman with plans within plans and a twisted code of honor that bends around the psychosis afflicting Epics. Obliteration, by contrast, is completely insane but his beliefs are entirely consistent with the deranged world which have sprung up around humanity. They're wonderful comic book-style villains and watching our heroes play off them is excellent.

We also finally get an explanation for how and why Epics are given their powers as well as how their minds are shattered beyond recovery. I'm not entirely satisfied with this explanation but think it works for the story which Brandon Sanderson is trying to tell. Certainly, it provides a lot of dramatic energy which the story exploits from beginning to end. It also results in a massive twist at the end which made me buy the third novel in the series immediately.

The only thing I didn't like about the novel was the romance between Megan and David. Unfortunately, this takes up quite a bit of the novel. David is deeply in love with the treacherous and evil Epic as well as convinced she is secretly good. This is, apparently, purely because he thinks she's hot. Unfortunately, the narrative bears out David's suspicions and it becomes a tedious display of why the power of love wins out over all.

The action scenes in the book are incredible with truly epic fights that are described well. Brandon Sanderson has a movie director's ability to stage them in his text and an unlimited budget to see them on display. He also manages to invoke tension for all of our heroes because we never know who will die or be taken out of play by the events within. That's a rare gift and one which raises the stakes in the book considerably.

In conclusion, Firefight is a really good novel weighed down by what TV tropes calls a "Romantic Plot Tumor." Even so, I'm going to say it's an excellent action adventure novel throughout. It strikes the right sort of balance between fantasy, science fiction, and reality in order to feel like a good comic book. I also cared about the characters enough that I wanted the story to continue. Which is a pretty good endorsement all round.

A different caste than the first novel, but a blast of a time ... !

I wasn't sure what to think of the concept of "The Reckoners" series to begin with, honestly. Then again my brain said, "Nikki, it's Brandon Sanderson, get real." So I finally gave in to Steelheart, the book prior to this novel. I'm so very glad I did. Firefight wasn't as grimy, or gritty, or didn't have that down home -- hit the streets and strangle the big bad oppressive epic who killed your dad and ruined your life feel to it.

However, don't let that stop you. Like Mr. Sanderson always does, he rocks your world entirely, and he does it with that cool calm logic that frustrates and excites you down to your very core. His books never cease to amaze me, he can add a fractal of information in a corner of your mind somewhere and so just when you're feeling a little "mehhh" you turn a few pages and it plows over you so hard you'll wish you had a few enteric aspirin on hand! The last third of Firefight had this effect on me. It's a definite read just for the imagery, the pictures he paints in your head of the city they travel to. I could spend days there in my head. I won't bore you with my review, I was impressed though, yet again, but I suppose from me, that's no surprise.

I freaking love this series

I just had a lot of fun reading this book, despite the fact I stayed up too late reading it and now Brandon Sanderson will have earned his kickback from the caffeine companies. I really love the characters and REALLY need to see what happens. You can bet David's encounter with Calamity is not as simple as it seemed! I'll be finishing the series today, probably.

Likes: Tons of action, interesting twists, some cool character development. Really it's not the deepest book out there, but like I said, I just had a lot of fun reading it. I loved Dawnslight and the thing with the fortune cookies, I hope it's not the last we see of that character. I also thought there were some pretty hilarious parts with David's inept metaphors and general awkwardness.

Dislikes: I wish there was WAY more of Firefight (it's the title for heaven's sake) and WAY more of Prof. He's such a great character

About the Author

H. Scott Fogler is the Ame and Catherine Vennema Professor of Chemical Engineering and the Arthur F. Thurnau Professor at the University of Michigan, and is the 2009 President of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers. His research interests include flow and reaction in porous media, fused chemical relations, gellation kinetics, colloidal phenomena, and catalyzed dissolution. He has been thesis advisor for 40 Ph.D. students and has more than 200 refereed publications in these areas. Fogler has chaired ASEE’s Chemical Engineering Division, served as director of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, and earned the Warren K. Lewis Award from AIChE for contributions to chemical engineering education. He also received the Chemical Manufacturers Association’s National Catalyst Award. He is a coauthor of the best-selling textbook Strategies for Creative Problem Solving, Third Edition (Prentice Hall, 2014).

Excellent textbook

This is actually one of the best textbooks that I've been required to use. The topics are explained very well in this text and the examples are excellent. The book problems are very difficult though, which is a bit surprising. I used this book as part of a kinetics class and I actually felt like it was quite a bit of help. The writing is good and it's easy to follow the topics. It reads very linearly for the most part which is a good thing. It's a great textbook for reaction engineering.

Excellent Book

I have read this book up to chapter 7 for my class at the moment of this review and I want to say that this is hands down one of the best chemical engineering books out there. This book explains everything clearly and will leave you with no questions after you read it and think through it. Also it has many great example that really help solve the end of chapter problems, and the end of chapter summaries are great help for going back for formulas and quick references.
It also comes with extra content and worked examples in the CD, including extra chapters. I have to admit that I have not used this included resource as of yet since they do a lot of stuff in POLYMATH and MATLAB and I use python. But is there for whoever wants to use that software.
Anyways, after a year of using a horrible transport phenomena book this book comes at a great surprise and I strongly recommend you get it even if professor posts notes. And if you get it new (I don't know if it works for used copies) you can get a free PDF along with a reduced POLYMATH price of $19.50.
I will post back after I finish the book but so far I am loving it and learning a lot.

After conquering galaxies, Captain Invincible and his space-dog, Comet, prepare for an adventurous return to Earth in their spaceship Hawk. Using the Space Shaper panel, with its three-dimensional buttons that include a cube, a cone, and a pyramid, the captain and the pup wage a battle against a meteor shower, poison gas, a flying saucer, and a galactic beast. Just as the two are about to land safely, a beam of light floods their spaceship, and an open bedroom door reveals the true source of this journey-a child's late-night, wondrous imagination with the help of paper, scissors, and Scotch tape. The bold cartoon art in deep, bright colors draws readers into this fun and exciting story that is a vehicle for learning to recognize and define geometric shapes. The concluding reinforcement strategies and activities are very good. A good choice as a read-aloud or for independent reading.

Piloting through space the pair encounters several dangerous situations, which they avert by pushing one of six three-dimensional buttons on their instrument panel, ejecting a corresponding Spacer Shape that does the job. When an ominous gas invades the ship, for instance, Captain Invincible pushes a conically shaped button, releasing a cone that sucks up the gas through its circular base. The glossy Jetson-like cartoon illustrations have high entertainment value, the shapes are clearly identifiable, and the story gives the math lesson an out-of-this-world appeal. misteriosamente cautivadora

Que puedo decir de tan maravillosa historia? Creo que despu�s de leerla, me faltaran las palabras Id�neas, que alcancen el nivel de critica a su autor.
Juan nos vuelve a sorprender con su maravillosa pluma de horror, misterio y algo de ciencia ficci�n. Me encanta su narrativa fluida, y realista. Los personajes tan n�tidamente descritos al igual que las escenas. Cada cap�tulo es una aventura que te envuelve y sumerge dentro de esta historia, donde varios de los habitantes de Harmony Ville son sorprendidos por la codicia de un millonario sin escr�pulos.... Que se refleja claramente en la pregunta que abre camino a esta intrigante historia, "es la ingenuidad humana el factor que los hombres poderosos necesitan....?" si la respuesta es si....

Si te gustan las historias de intriga, suspenso y horror, narradas con una poderosa voz literaria capaz de llenarte de escalofr�os el cuerpo y maravillarte en cada p�rrafo, te invito a leer esta y todas las historias de este autor...

En este libro Juan nos muestra hasta donde es capaz de llegar la gente por poder y lo poco que les importa las perdidas "minimas" por el bien "mayor" .

Una historia que te matendra con los nervios de punta,queriendo saber el final.

Cada escena est� tan bien detallada que no es dificil imaginarsela y sumegirse en la historia, sentir la felicidad de las personas al principio cuando creen que han encontrado una nueva oportunidad en sus vidas y luego el miedo, la deseperacion, la frustracion, la ira al verse enga�ados y utilizados.

Me ha encantado este libro, me ha mantenido en un suspenso, que creia que me daria un ataque jajajajajja, pero sin duda es un libro fantastico y que no debe dejar de leerse.
