Surviving Hitler: A Boy In The Nazi Death Camps, by Andrea Warren

Award-winning author Andrea Warren presents a life-changing story of a young boy's struggle for survival in a Nazi-run concentration camp. In this Robert F. Silbert Honor Book, narrated in the voice of Holocaust survivor Jack Mandelbaum, readers will glimpse the dark reality of life during the Holocaust, and how one boy made it out alive.

When twelve-year-old Jack Mandelbaum is separated from his family and shipped off to the Blechhammer concentration camp, his life becomes a never-ending nightmare. With minimal food to eat and harsh living conditions threatening his health, Jack manages to survive by thinking of his family.

From School Library Journal
Grade 5-8-Through the words and memories of Jack Mandelbaum, Warren presents a harrowing account of a Jewish boy's experience in Nazi prison camps. Mandelbaum had lived a comfortable life with his family in Gdynia, Poland, until the German invasion forced them to flee to a relative's village in 1939. Later, when the Jews were sent to concentration camps, the 12-year-old became separated from the rest of his family and wound up in the Blechhammer camp. By describing events through the boy's voice, the author does an excellent job of letting his words carry the power of the story. She avoids historical analysis, sticking to Mandelbaum's experiences, and brings readers into the nightmarish world of the concentration camp with a strong feeling of immediacy. As with many stories of great suffering, some of the minor details, such as risking death to steal a jar of marmalade, deliver the most impact. Besides the physical hardship, Warren conveys how frustrating and confusing it was for a child in such an environment. Once liberated, the young man learned the sad fate of his family and as he ironically observed, had he known his parents and siblings would not survive, he might not have struggled so hard to live himself. Black-and-white contemporary photographs illustrate the book. This story works as an introduction to the Holocaust and will also interest readers of Lila Perl's Four Perfect Pebbles (Greenwillow, 1996), Anne Frank's diary, and other works on the period.

From Booklist
Gr. 5-10. Simply told, Warren's powerful story blends the personal testimony of Holocaust survivor Jack Mandelbaum with the history of his time, documented by stirring photos from the archives of the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum. Mandelbaum was 12 when the Nazis came to Poland in 1939. At first the thought of war was "thrilling." Then he saw his prosperous, happy home torn apart, and he spent three years as a teenager in the death camps in Germany, where he survived by a combination of courage, friendship, and luck. Warren, who never knew any Jews when she was growing up in a small Nebraska town, brings both passion and the distance of the outsider to the story. True to Mandelbaum's youthful viewpoint, she lets the story unfold slowly so readers don't know until the end what happened to Jack's mother and brother after they were separated, or whether his friends survived. The combination of Mandelbaum's experience and Warren's reporting of the whole picture makes this an excellent introduction for readers who don't know much about the history. There's only one false note. Unlike Anita Lobel's No Pretty Pictures (1998) and many other personal accounts, there's a radiant innocence here: everything "before" was blissful ("It was a lovely life"), and, even in the camps, Jack never has an ugly thought. The design is open and inviting with clear type, many photos, and an excellent multimedia bibliography. Hazel Rochman

Very good memoir for the whole family.
By Nen
I wanted my kids (ages 8, 10, 13, 15) to learn a little about the holocaust, and we read this out loud as a family. It's pretty heavy material, but my kids were mesmerized by the tragic story of Jack. It's such an interesting narrative, and the author did a great job of keeping it real and personal. The message of the book is one of hope and perseverance, and it gave my family exactly what I was looking for - an example of how someone can conquer a terrible situation with an attitude of determination, even in the face of so much loss and hardship.

The telling of the story is aimed at youth, and although there are hard truths in it, the book does not dwell on the negative or sensationalize any part of the story. It's told honestly and simply, and even my 8 year old was able to listen without being overwhelmed by the tragic aspect of the subject matter. The pictures in the book really helped them visualize the different things he spoke of. They made the book a little more real, and none of the pictures were disturbing or graphic.

Very well done. 5 stars.

Good introduction to the Holocaust
By Little Scout
I purchased this audio CD of Surviving Hitler to accompany the book. I work with students who often struggle with reading, but enjoy using audio books. This CD follows along with the text perfectly and is easy to navigate. So, readers can listen to the audio and follow along in the book to help with comprehension. It is good to listen to as a whole class or individually with headphones.

Surviving Hitler is a great read for students that are being introduced to the Holocaust as it is a straight forward story that is told quite simply. It is well suited for upper elementary school through high school depending on reading levels and maturity. The reader is not spared from the horrors of the Holocaust which helps readers to be able to emphasize with the memoir of Jack. It would fit perfectly with a unit on the Holocaust or Holocaust based literature.

FOR CHILDREN
By Bev Thompson
I was not aware, when I ordered this book, that it was written for children. I read it anyway, because of the factual historical significance. It's a very small book and was only a one-evening read. Hubby did not think it appropriate for children, although I believe it is a good way for them to learn what really happened to Europe's Jews. If you have children, and you want them to learn, this is the book for them.

Meyers ( Aerobic Walking ) is a man with a mission. He knows that walking is often viewed as the stepchild of aerobic exercise, suitable only for the out-of-shape. And he wants to correct that misconception: in his latest book, he argues that walkers can achieve out of context, 'produce' a clumsy verb "the cardiovascular fitness level and caloric expenditure of a runner without the injuries."44 Meyers also believes that perambulation has a "potential cross-training effect" for people devoted to other sports--skiing, cycling, running, tennis.15 To demonstrate why walking for fitness works, he explains the biomechanics of the evolution of the human gait, with a nod to Lucy, our famous three-million-year-old female forebear.18 He recognizes that a lifetime fitness see below program108 must be sounds like Marxist jargon? simple enough for casual exercisers and yet challenging enough to maintain their interest. His walking program increases aerobic conditioning using intensity (how fast), frequency (how often), and duration (how far).60 In chatty prose, he extols the virtues of gradually increasing one's pace from strolling to brisk walking, with the goal being a 12-minute mile. He also dispenses advice on everything from stretching62 and diet216 to road safety 184 and how to choose a shoe174 . His design for fitness may not be glamorous, but it is inexpensive, easy to follow and practical for people from eight to 80. Author tour.

From Library Journal
In his second book on walking, Meyers ( Aerobic Walking , Random, 1987) goes beyond "how to" and argues for walking's absolute supremacy as a method of weight loss and cardiovascular fitness. He backs up his assertions with scientific evidence, though he admits this evidence often runs counter to much of current thought. His arguments would be more easily acceptable if he did not harp on his feeling that the rest of the world gives walking short shrift (runners, he says, hold walkers in "contempt"), and if he did not see fit to chop down other forms of exercise in order to elevate his own. Still, his book will stimulate some to give walking a try, and Meyers offers sound technical advice. Recommended with reservations for larger exercise collections.

Good motivation to keep fit.
By Julio Ramirez
I had never taken so serious walking as an exercise at my age -67. This book has helped me understand the mechanics of exercise walking which has made me walk faster. I did my first 10K which I thought I would never get to do. It proves that if you read about the right techniques the you look for and practice you achieve good results. I do recommend this book to all those who like to walk as a good exercise to loose weight or just to keep fit.

Book Review: Walking by Casey Meyers
By Bob Smither
Walking is an update to his earlier book Aerobic Walking. Being a walker I appreciated this book for the information and the encouragement it provides.

Meyers was 79 years old when he wrote the book, and has had his share of physical problems during his life - including two knee replacements and, 10 years before he wrote the book, a nearly fatal massive blockage in his heart.

Through all his health issues he has continued to walk, and is certain that he has reached his current age only because of it.

The book spends a lot of pages comparing walking and running. As we all know, runners have injuries - in fact in any given year a runner has a 50 - 50 chance of suffering an injury that will alter or stop their training. When I was running my training was often interrupted by a torn Achilles tendon. Walkers, on the other hand, seem to remain remarkably injury free.

A common theme in the book is that walking just doesn't get the respect it deserves. Walking is perceived as a "beginner's exercise", only done when for some reason the athlete can't engage in more strenuous exercises such as running. Meyers relates an incident in which, when he was 62, he was teased by a 20 year old runner during one of his walks. He challenged the youngster to a 2 mile walk, and handily beat him (thanks to the specificity principle - which states that our body does best what it does most).

I completely relate to this story - back when I was training to run marathons some friends asked me to join them for a bike ride from Houston to Huntsville (about 70 miles). As I had previously done century (100 mile) bike rides and was in pretty good shape I rode with them. About half way through the ride I realized that my legs were trained for running and had lost the conditioning needed for propelling a bike. It was a miserable ride.

After a through discussion of lifestyle, stretching, posture, strolling, brisk walking, aerobic walking, and walking for weight loss, Meyers expounds on what he calls high-intensity walking.

Research on walkers and runners has, somewhat surprisingly, demonstrated that an athlete can obtain the same level of fitness, as measured by their oxygen intake, by walking as they can by running. Admittedly, this result only follows from high-intensity walking - defined here as walking at a pace of 12 minutes a mile or faster. Although clearly runners will cover the ground faster than walkers, a walker doing high-intensity walking can be every bit as fit as the most highly trained runner.

Meyers has a chapter on how regular walkers can progress to faster paces (and higher fitness levels). The most important trick is to bend the arms at the elbow to shorten the natural period of your arm swing.

The book has some not so good news for anyone walking to lose or control their weight. While exercising 3 or 4 days a week will certainly improve your overall health in many ways, it may be necessary to exercise 6 or 7 days a week to have an effect on your weight.

Meyers ends the book with chapters on race walking (an under-appreciated sport), the medical aspects of walking (useful in cardiac rehabilitation, stroke, hypertension, and other diseases), and mental benefits (it's good for the brain as well!).

All in all an enjoyable read about a subject I am interested in. The book has many practical suggestions for getting the maximum benefit from your walking, and incorporating a better diet into a healthy lifestyle.

Recommended.

Inspirational and for me, life-changing
By Loomis Golfer
As a 67-year-old woman who had never done any cardio work in my life, I became interested in walking when I signed up to walk a half-marathon. I had about six months to train for it, so I decided to invest in a book so that I would know the proper gait and pace. I wanted to make sure I didn't hurt myself preparing for the half-marathon. In my research, I came upon this book and read the reviews. I bought the book and devoured it. It is very informative and inspiring. As I write this review, I am three months into my six month preparation and have taken brisk walking truly to heart. The most amazing thing to me is that since I started brisk walking, using the techniques and approaches that Casey Meyers recommends, I have stopped having headaches. For over two years I have suffered with a nagging headache and have undergone all the high-tech testing to try to diagnose the problem, to no avail. I can't say for sure that the brisk walking was what cured my headaches, and I'm not a physician, but I cannot pin it on anything else. If that weren't enough, I've also shed pounds, gone down a size in clothing, and I feel fantastic. This is a great book if you want to know how to correctly use the simple act of walking to improve your life.

The Narcissism Epidemic: Living in the Age of Entitlement, by Jean M. Twenge, W. Keith Campbell

Narcissism—an inflated view of the self—is everywhere. Public figures say it’s what makes them stray from their wives. Parents teach it by dressing children in T-shirts that say "Princess." Teenagers and young adults hone it on Facebook, and celebrity newsmakers have elevated it to an art form. And it’s what’s making people depressed, lonely, and buried under piles of debt.

Jean Twenge’s influential first book, Generation Me, spurred a national debate with its depiction of the challenges twenty- and thirty-somethings face in today’s world—and the fallout these issues create for educators and employers. Now, Dr. Twenge turns her focus to the pernicious spread of narcissism in today’s culture, which has repercussions for every age group and class. Dr. Twenge joins forces with W. Keith Campbell, Ph.D., a nationally recognized expert on narcissism, to explore this new plague in The Narcissism Epidemic, their eye-opening exposition of the alarming rise of narcissism and its catastrophic effects at every level of society. Even the world economy has been damaged by risky, unrealistic overconfidence. Drawing on their own extensive research as well as decades of other experts’ studies, Drs. Twenge and Campbell show us how to identify narcissism, minimize the forces that sustain and transmit it, and treat it or manage it where we find it. Filled with arresting, alarming, and even amusing stories of vanity gone off the tracks (would you like to hire your own personal paparazzi?), The Narcissism Epidemic is at once a riveting window into the consequences of narcissism, a prescription to combat the widespread problems it causes, and a probing analysis of the culture at large.

From Booklist
Twenge and Campbell, psychologists and authors of previous books on self-admiration, team up for a thorough look at a troubling trend that has broad cultural implications. They begin by chronicling changes in American culture that have brought us Botox, fake paparazzi, and MySpace. The authors distinguish between self-esteem and narcissism, drawing on scientific research, but focus on narcissistic personality traits “among the normal population” and cultural narcissism that goes deep into social values. The authors debunk myths about narcissism—that it is necessary in order to be competitive and that narcissists are actually overcompensating for low self-esteem. Although young girls have been hit hardest by the narcissism epidemic, with unrealistic notions of physical beauty, the scourge has affected us all—witness Wall Street greed and the mortgage crisis with its overblown sense of materialism and entitlement. The authors argue that the nation needs to recognize the epidemic and its negative consequences, and take corrective action. Individuals can start by practicing gratitude, and parents can teach their children friendship skills, with the emphasis on others rather than self. --Vanessa Bush

"The other night, when I was reading Twenge and Campbell's excellent and timely new book, my husband was busy framing a fake "Sports Illustrated" cover, with a picture of our 7-year old over the caption, "Player of the Year." "The Narcissism Epidemic" will hew close to the bone, rouse, and provoke many readers as it shines a spotlight on an important -- and highly costly -- trend in our lives. Rooted in hard data and illuminated with revealing anecdotes, stories, and solutions, "The Narcissism Epidemic" is both a pleasure and an education. But enough about this book. Let's talk about me." -- Sonja Lyubomirsky, Ph.D., author of "The How of Happiness: A Scientific Approach to Getting the Life You Want"

"An important and illuminating book. Drs. Twenge and Campbell expertly analyze many strands of American culture and reveal an alarming tapestry of psychocultural narcissism. "Filled with important, disturbing research detailing the alarming cultural spread of narcissism today -- a serious social problem to which many people are unwittingly contributing without realizing the disastrous consequences. Healing the Daughters of Narcissistic Mothers "

""The Narcissism Epidemic" is a must read, an essential antidote to a culture spinning out of control. Filled with facts, fascinating examples, and written in a highly readable style, Twenge and Campbell's outstanding book shows how narcissism has been on the rise and has taken over almost every part of our lives and how we can rescue our culture from ourselves. "A must-read for anyone who is a parent, a relationship partner, in the workforce, in school, or on the job market. "This insightful book shows us how the epidemic of narcissism touches almost all aspects of our lives. Twenge and Campbell's astute analysis and salient anecdotes powerfully map the problem and the high price we all pay. They expertly show us the kinds of actions we can take to free ourselves of the epidemic's ruthless grip and how the future wellbeing of humane society depends on our doing so." -- Diane E. "The evidence Twenge and Campbell have compiled is compelling and appalling.... Twenge and Campbell marshal statistics, polls, charts, studies and anecdotes to assemble a complete picture of the epidemic's current state of contagion, brought on by the Internet, reality television, a booming economy, easy credit and other developments over the past decade. The authors dismantle the prevailing myths that have made us inclined to tolerate and even encourage narcissism: that it's a function of high self-esteem, that it's a function of low self-esteem, that a little narcissism is healthy, that narcissists are in fact superior, that you have to love yourself to be able to love someone else." -- "New York Times Style Magazine"

Good book
By Jennifer
Everyone should read this. I don't agree with everything, but most of it is so true. I notice that people are much more likely to be extremely rude, than when I was young. Now people seem to think the world revolves around them. And other people see the Narcissism of Trump and think his childish behavior is great. So being a huge jerk is now admirable behavior. I got this book because I've been victimized by some very narcissistic people and have noticed that the narcissism has become the norm, when it should be an aberration. This book really explains a lot about how this came about and what the remedy could be.

This psychologist loves this book
By Jason Kanz
The Narcissism Epidemic (2009) by Jean Twenge and W. Keith Campbell is an important book. I first heard Twenge interviewed by Michael Horton on the radio program the White Horse Inn. She presented a compelling case for the growth of narcissism and its effects upon society.

This book explores the concept of narcissism and its growth, particularly in the United States using a disease model. The book is organized into 4 sections: the diagnosis, the root causes of the epidemic, symptoms of narcissism, and prognosis and treatment.

It appears that narcissism is, in many ways, a product of the self-esteem movement gone awry. Psychological and educational programs that have attempted to foster self-esteem have sometimes gone too far, creating an environment of pandemic specialness. One of the authors young daughters made the astute observation that "if everyone is special, then no one is really special." One of the songs sung at the school of Dr Campbell's daughter went "I am special/I am special/Look at Me." In short, narcissism is a problem rooted in a sense of one's own specialness.

I particularly appreciated section 2, which dealt with root causes of the epidemic. The authors provided example after example of frankly horrifying examples of narcissism. In parenting, there is a growing emphasis on being child-centered, often relying on children to be decision makers in the family. Parents glorify their children through buying them expensive things and calling them "princesses." Even at the college level, parents are confronting faculty members and advocating for better grades for their deserving, special children. But this is problematic. The authors commented that "thinking you're great when you actually stink is a recipe for narcissism." In addition to parenting methods that foster narcissistic traits, the celebrity focused culture (think Miley Cyrus), social media (Facebook, YouTube), and the credit crisis have all contributed to our senses of being exceptional.

In the third section, they described symptoms of narcissism, which include: vanity, materialism, uniqueness, antisocial behavior, relationship troubles, and entitlement. It felt like I was reading a list of the 7 deadly sins or something akin to it.

In the final section, they provide specific recommendations for how we as a society and as individuals may respond to this crisis. For example, helping our children to develop an accurate, rather than inflated, self-image is helpful. Encouraging them to develop social interest rather than excessive self interest is essential. I particularly liked their recommendation near the end of the book to consider a Fair Tax model of taxation. I would not have made the connection to narcissism, but I think they are right.

I had just a few concerns about the book. In a few different places, they linked narcissism to global warming and environmental destruction. This seemed like a stretch to me and that they were looking for a way to bring this issue to the table. I also disagreed with some of their parenting recommendations, but that is more closely linked to my worldview and my understanding of the psychological research than anything else.

On the whole, The Narcissism Epidemic is a very important book. Not only would it be useful for helping professionals, but frankly for anyone who's interested in at least one explanation for why society has changed in the way it has. I fear what will happen if we continue down this road and continue to criticize more traditional values like humility, love, and kindness.

Great, but the future is not that scary.
By PerphektXero
While it has a little bit of doom and gloom, it does offer some great information and insight into the direction culture is going. There is plenty of research in this book, and while some of the claims appear to be very well researched, other claims feel more like speculation and assumptive without much support. I recommend reading this, but also seeking other contrary opinions as well. The authors do not seem to put much effort into contradicting evidence (some, but not nearly enough). I also think it is easy to get into this because it is easy to believe and we can use this book to find examples in many aspects of our culture today (sometimes a little too well, confirmation bias).

So many mistakes!
By angelika
Every homework I am assigned from this book AT LEAST one answer from the back is incorrect. It is very frustrating when I come up with the right answer and then waste one after hour trying to figure out what I did wrong! I can't rely on the practice exercises because I never know if I'm wrong or the book. I never knew it was possible for a book that costs this much to have SO MANY MISTAKES. If you charge students that much, can't you pay someone to verify that so this book can be reliable?? And by the way, I know that the book is wrong because I asked a tutor and my professor to take a look and confirm. So I'm not just blaming my mistakes on the book. This book was required for my course so I had no choice.

By Amazon Customer
Here is a textbook that I actually read for the class. Many students struggled in my inorganic chemistry 2 class and I got an A by actually reading and doing the homework problems. My professor used the powerpoints that are included by the publisher and although it is the same material as the textbook, as expected, they are condensed. The textbook gives the full story and gives practical examples. The practical examples were very interesting to me and its these examples that makes students actually know **practical** things when they leave college.

Good subject matter but missing things*
By Todd C. Steen
First the good.

The book does a good job of giving you a backround of the texture history and progression. It also gives you a lot of tips and tricks, explained plainly. It also provides step by step instructions on how to do many things that professionals rely on. Overall, it is a well thought out with lots of good information on a professional level.

The bad.

Since this is a third edition it makes use of the previous 2 editions and some of the material. Unfortunately it requires use of files that were on a disk from previous editions. There is no CD with this book so several of the exercises and files cannot be followed. There are worthwhile excercises you can do without the files, but it does diminish the value of the book significantly. Until the publisher puts these files online for the users, I can't recommend this version of the book. Very disappointing.

Edit:

I contacted the publisher and they said that a CD does not come with it. Even though the book makes numerous mentions and has tutorials to follow. They also said I should send them all the page numbers with references to a CD so they can delete them. (I thought that is what an editor is supposed to do.)

Do yourself a favor and purchase a different edition so you can get the files or try and and an alternative means of getting the files.

Edit:

Author has since moved downloads to website so you can now access file. In this case it is certainly a worthwhile purchase.

Save yourself a lot of wasted time...
By GREG P
I have been scouring the Internet for texturing tutorials for over a year, now, after reading this awesome book, I think I just saved myself hours and hours of wasted time looking for tips and tricks.
It answered many questions I had, as well as revealing basic fundamentals that I had missed before, which was why I was struggling. Already my texturing has advanced 200% in 1 week!
I am actually using GIMP Paint-studio 2.8, which I know quite well, so that also is a good recommendation that I can use different software and get the same or similar result.
Truly, this is where you should start if you want to learn texture creation for games!
(Although I should point out if you use Gimp or other software than Photoshop, the filters are not named exactly the same, but all the techniques are gone over pretty extensively, so you can figure out how to do it, and you will need to develop your own technique to get the same end result. But it is a good way to learn Texturing.)

which is disappointing because it came highly recommended. Some of the techniques are outdated
By SuperDave
An ok book for an absolute clueless beginner, but limited real value to anyone whos been in the industry on the artistic side for a while, which is disappointing because it came highly recommended. Some of the techniques are outdated, and only suited to low-fi non-HD graphics, defiantly not suited for next gen development. Its decent at what it does though, so if your clueless about graphics for games, or want to learn some nifty photoshop techniques that you can probably find on youtube for free anyway, go ahead and grab it for the bookshelf!

Call Me Tuesday, by Leigh Byrne

At eight-years-old, Tuesday Storm's childhood is forever lost when the death of her older sister, Audrey, sends her family spiraling out of control into the darkest of dysfunction. In the wake of the tragedy, her mother, distraught and seeking a scapegoat, singles Tuesday out from her siblings to take on the blame for Audrey's death, and then targets her for unspeakable abuse. Almost overnight, Tuesday's already less than perfect childhood becomes an endless nightmare of twisted "games" and sadistic punishments as she's forced to confront the cruelty lurking behind the beautiful face of the mother she idolizes.

Based on a true story, Call Me Tuesday recounts, with raw emotion, a young girl's years of physical and mental torment at the mercy of the monster in her mother's clothes--a monster she doesn't know how to stop loving. Tuesday's painful journey through the hidden horrors of child abuse will open your eyes to what could be going on behind your neighbor's door, while her unwavering love for the parents who have betrayed her will tug at your heartstrings.

Review
"...a horrifying story inspired by true-life experience...well-written...the prose so vividly and evocatively portrays suffering." ~ Kirkus Reviews

"Despite the disturbing subject matter, the writing is well-crafted but never emotionally manipulative or maudlin, which made this a surprisingly enjoyable read." ~Online Book Club

From the Author
When I was a kid, I refused to believe my mother hated me. No matter how many times she said it, my young, optimistic mind simply would not allow it to be true. It wasn't until the day I felt her grip tighten at the back of my neck, as she submerged my head in scalding water and smashed my face into the bottom of the bathtub, that the terror of drowning grabbed me by the shoulders and shook the truth into me.

This, and all the abuse described in Call Me Tuesday is 100% true, and I, the author, am the one who endured it. Other parts of the book, like the names and locations, were fictionalized. I decided to do this out of respect for the people involved, but also, on a more personal level, I found it easier to write about the horrific and humiliating things that happened to a fictitious child named Tuesday than to write about the horrific and humiliating things that, in reality, happened to the little girl I used to be.

I'm adding this note because I feel it's important to make it clear that the abuse part of the book is true, so while reading the story you can keep it in the back of your mind that the kind of extreme maltreatment of a child at the hands of a parent, as detailed in Call Me Tuesday, does actually happen--something I believe everyone needs to know.

About the Author
Leigh Byrne is an American author whose books include two Amazon bestselling memoirs, the brutal Call Me Tuesday, in which she reveals her experiences as a victim of extreme child abuse, and Call Me Cockroach, detailing the bizarre ways her childhood trauma crippled her young adult life and her daily struggles to overcome these challenges. Leigh is currently working on a third book, Splatter, due to be released in 2016.

I believe this story, because I lived something very similar
By Lynda
I bought this book 3 days ago and found it so well-written and compelling, that I stayed up all night reading it. As soon as I finished reading Call Me Tuesday, I immediately bought her second book, Call Me Cockroach. I finished reading the second one this morning.

I highly recommend both books... unless you are one of those people who had a golden childhood and you cannot imagine any parent, especially a mother, hating her precious little girl and violently abusing her, almost to the point of death. As for me, I do not have any doubts whatsoever about the truth of this story. I had a momster very much like Tuesday's. The details are different, but the pain and the deep psychological wounds are the same.

I am so grateful to the author for writing her memoirs and sharing them with the world, so people like me can know that we aren't the only one... and to show us the way to healing (as much as possible), and to a happy, fulfilling life. I am especially grateful, because I know how hard it is to put this kind of story in writing. I first tried to write a memoir when I was in my early twenties. Today I have a granddaughter in her early twenties, who is a graduate student at Harvard, and I am still trying to write my memoir.

A bittersweet gem
By StellaCadente
The day after I finished this book (in two sittings), a very unusual obituary made the news. In it, a dead Nevada woman's children welcomed her death and described their utter contempt for her after years of physical and mental abuse, in the hopes of getting people talking about the problem of child abuse. It was a horrific reminder that child abuse is all too real, and it happens in all walks of life. When you read "Call me Tuesday," you'll realize very quickly that you simply cannot make this kind of story up.

Behind a seeming normal, middle-class Southern facade, the author, known as Tuesday (for the actress Tuesday Weld), describes an unenviable childhood that turns unbearable after severe head trauma transforms her mother into a sadistic jailer who denies not only love and comfort, but food and most other basic needs. Her mother revels in the way that other children ignore and mistreat her daughter, as it only confirms her belief, which she drums into her daughter, that the girl is ugly and defective. Even her father, who makes some gestures to help her enjoy brief moments of normality outside the home, is caught up by his own helplessness in the wake of this tornado of an abusive woman. He isn't the only adult who fails to help, either.

I don't think for a moment that Rose, the mother, was "normal" to begin with. As the story unfolds, we learn she always had a cruel streak, and very likely enjoyed, Munchhausen by Proxy-style, being the pitied mother of a sickly child. It seems likely that Tuesday was always the discounted one, an afterthought (not to mention, free labor) whose distress at the belief that she was responsible for the death first of a family pet and then her polio-stricken sister was roundly ignored. When her mother emerges from the hospital as some kind of character from a horror flick, Tuesday is already easy prey.

What saves this memoir from maudlin self-indulgence is author Leigh Byrne's confident, believable voice. You really do feel like you are traveling along with Tuesday on this hellish journey through the eyes of a child, then a teenager, sad and wise beyond her years. This is a once-in-a-blue-moon type find, and I look forward to the continuation of the story.

Heart breaking story
By Courtney Speidel
Thank you so much for sharing your story. I too, was the victim of severe child abuse. I even went through some of the same things as you. Mine was in the 1970's as well, when no one paid attention to bruised children. I thin you are brave for sharing, and I am grateful to you. It is therapeutic to hear that I am not alone in my childhood terrors. I have purchased the sequel. God bless you!! :)
Courtney

P.S. you were "Horse- face" I was "Cross-eyed Creep" We have both grown past all of that now
