About the Author
Joshua Cole is Professor of History at the University of Michigan. Specializing in the social and cultural history of France since the Revolution of 1789, he earned his Ph.D. at University of California at Berkeley. He is the author of The Power of Large Numbers: Population, Politics, and Gender in Nineteenth-Century France (2000).

Carol Symes is an Associate Professor of history and Director of Undergraduate Studies in the history department at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, where she has won the top teaching award in the College of Liberal Arts and Science. Her main areas of study include medieval Europe, especially France and England; cultural history; history of information media and communication technologies; history of theatre. Her first book was A Common Stage: Theater and Public Life in Medieval Arras (2007).

This book has everything the hardback does, yet it is not easily maneuvered through. If you get this version, please only get it for one class, not an extended period of time or for more classes. The graphics are wonderful and I enjoyed being able to zoom in.

About the Author
Nina Simon is an independent experience designer with expertise in participatory design, gaming, and social technology. She is the principal of Museum 2.0, a design firm that works with museums, libraries, and cultural institutions worldwide to create dynamic, audience-driven exhibitions and educational programs. In addition to design work, Nina lectures and gives workshops on visitor participation. She is an adjunct professor of social technology in the University of Washington Museology program. Nina authors the Museum 2.0 blog, which also appears as a column in Museum magazine. She is also a member of the board of the National Association of Museum Exhibitions. Previously, Nina served as Curator at The Tech Museum of Innovation in San Jose, CA, and was the Experience Development Specialist at the International Spy Museum in Washington, D.C. Inspiring book, full of great case studies and workable ideas

In The Participatory Museum, Nina Simon argues that the social web has changed the way that people relate to one another and the world, and makes a case for introducing participatory design to cultural institutions.

The Participatory Museum offers compelling real-life examples and case studies of cultural institutions that have adopted new media strategies to help fulfill their institutional missions. These new media strategies do not always (and often do not) take place on the web. Rather, Simon is concerned with gleaning knowledge from web and new media interactions, and apply this knowledge to the real world.

Simon looks for inspiration in unexpected places. The case studies and examples that Simon cites are not limited to the museum world nor even to cultural institutions. She broadens her case studies to include for-profit corporations. including Netflix, Nike, and Harrah's Casinos.

Translating the participatory nature of social media to a museum sounds like a great idea. But as Simon is quick to acknowledge, this process is harder than it sounds. So how can museums design good participatory experiences? The bulk of the book is devoted to answering that question, so I will just briefly summarize some of Simon's most compelling points.

First, Simon acknowledges that not everyone WANTS to participate. For this reason, Simon suggests that participatory techniques should only be one of the interpretive techniques used by a museum.

Second, even when people do want to participate, they will participate in different ways.

Third, the use of cutting-edge technology is not neccessary to build a good participatory experience. Some of the options that Simon explores are decidedly low-tech.

Finally, museums should not pursue participatory unless it is really relevant to their mission. Institutions should only be asking questions that they care about and always, always, always be prepared to listen to the answers.

Most importantly to me as a reader, Simon is not just talking the talk. She posted her book online creating a dynamic piece of content where users can access her bibliography, review the book, comment on specific chapters, and add their own case studies. Simon is walking the walk by designing a truly participatory reader experience.

When I read the book I felt my self doing my PhD about modern museology. I learned designing participatory projects in cultural institutions and museums with an analytical and systematic approach. I learned developing visitor profiles and design methods for creating socially interactive environments in the museums and in cultural institutions. There are also very good and effective examples and case studies. I will use these designing methods in my work, which is designing and realizing museums both interior design and content development... Dear Nina, thank you very much ... not just for museums!

I don't work in a field related to museums at all. I sell enterprise software, but a common problem plaguing all businesses these days is how to stay relevant in a world where the public expects a level of interaction that the classic didactic experiences don't provide. Consumers want a high level or personalization, and interaction creates rich "sticky" experiences. I would recommend this book to anyone in experience design, shopper marketing, or anyone who ever has to has to stand a trade show booth.

One of the best things about this book is that she explains concrete approaches to make experiences more interactive and these are all based on case studies, there's little or no hand waving and pontification.

About the Author
Bethany McLean is an investigative journalist known for her work on the Enron scandal and the 2008 financial crisis. In 2001 as a young reporter at Fortune magazine, where she eventually became an editor at large, she wrote "Is Enron Overpriced?," one of the first skeptical articles about Enron. After the company collapsed into bankruptcy, she coauthored the bestseller, The Smartest Guys in the Room: The Amazing Rise and Scandalous Fall of Enron with her Fortune colleague Peter Elkin. A documentary based on the book was nominated for an Academy Award in 2006. Her most recent book, which she coauthored with New York Times columnist Joe Nocera, is All the Devils Are Here: The Hidden History of the Financial Crisis. Prior to joining Fortune she had been an investment analyst at Goldman Sachs. She is a contributing editor at Vanity Fair, a columnist for Fortune.com and a contributor to CNBC. A graduate of Williams College, she lives in Chicago.

Best Book Ever Read Because of Bonus Underlying Enlightenment of Our Political Machinery

This would have to be one of the best books I've ever read. Not exactly for the reason you would think though. This book belongs in the hand of every teenager or adult that plans on being involved more in our political system (this should be everyone). The only way this whole saga could have continued for 7 years as of today (Happy Anniversary!), is because of a decayed political system we are in. So many things could be improved in our housing system, yet the politicians and special interest groups have to spend all their efforts fending each other off, instead of fixing the problems. Bethany expertly puts together the real world facts that provide the best example by far of what broken politics is doing to our country. I don't think it was her goal, but that's what you get when you lay out the facts in this debacle. So for anyone out there looking for an exciting way to care more about our political system, this is it. This story is what got me off the bench. Hopefully, this gets in the hands of a bright, young star with fresh ideas that has what it takes to better the system.

As far as the housing specifics in this book, it was fabulous. This is about as close as you can get to a 50/50 non-partisan look at the GSEs. It's almost impossible to do, because there really is no middle ground in all of this. The book lays out the facts quite nicely and leaves both sides evenly wanting to tell much more of their story. That's what makes it a book for the masses though, not a manifesto. I highly recommend this book to anyone and everyone. I consider it required learning.

Brief Update of Fannie & Freddie ( although nothing's really changed)

This is a very brief (161 pages) update on the status of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, 6 years after the federal takeover. Nothing has really changed, which is the author's point. They clearly were at the center of the financial crisis, and all of the other major financial institutions that also were have changed dramatically; why are the GSEs still sitting in limbo? The reason turns out to be that Congress can't agree on what the fix should be, or can't bite the bullet and face up to the needed changes. Progressives want the subsidy of affordable housing maintained; free market believers want it ended; good-government moderates try to craft a compromise solution but the ideologues won't compromise - same old, same old. Meanwhile the Treasury keeps draining all the money the GSEs bring in, and the amount is so large that no one in D.C. wants to see it disappear. So the status quo continues.

McLean is best at laying out where the various politicians, ex- White House officials, interest groups, etc stand. She also shows a fair appreciation of the wrong done to holders of stock in the entities by the government's over-reaching once it took them over. It struck me as a fairly balanced presentation of the issues and where people stand on them. The book is written at a business-magazine level, not a single chart or graphic, very easy to read, a lot of material digested for the reader. At the same time, not an enormous amount of fresh insight.

Brilliant update on the role of the mortgage giants in the financial crisis and after

Brilliant and concise overview of what has happened to mortgage giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac since the financial crisis. I'm retired from high-level positions in handling mortgage portfolios, and it's my considered professional opinion that Bethany nails it on the key financial and political issues. She has a very accurate perspective on the role of these giants both before and after the conservatorships. I'm more concerned than ever after reading this that the government's housing policies distort markets and unnecessarily drive/limit the lifestyle choices of individuals. It's a great book and a quick read on issues that have been out of the mainstream awareness for several years now.
