TOM NOLAN has been a freelance writer for many publications (including Rolling Stone, The Village Voice, The New York Times Book Review, and Oxford American) since age 18—and a Ross Macdonald reader since age 11. He is the author of Ross Macdonald: A Biography (1999) and editor of Ross Macdonald’s The Archer Files (2007).  He is also the author of Artie Shaw, King of the Clarinet (reissued 2011) and has been crime fiction reviewer for The Wall Street Journal since 1990. He lives in Burbank, California.

Mastery -- better than most genre fiction

As something of a literary snob (not something I'm especially proud of), I tend to shy away from detective novels, saving them for vacations and travel or as a relief from reading history, my special interest. But when the Library of America gives its imprimatur, attention must be paid. I've only read the first of the four novels in this volume, and am eager to read the others. I'd never read Ross Macdonald before, and his work is a revelation. He was truly an American original, maybe even better than Raymond Chandler. I also ordered its companion volume, and expect it to be just as compulsively readable.

Psychopathology moves to Suburbia -- Four Ross Macdonald Novels of the 1950s ~

The Canadian-American author born Kenneth Millar spent most of his career writing as Ross Macdonald (not to be confused with suspense writer John D. MacDonald) and most of his novels were told through the eyes of Lew Archer, a detective with whom Macdonald would become as closely identified as Danshiell Hammett with Sam Spade or Mickey Spillane with Mike Hammer. While Macdonald's considerable output drew admiration from authors as disparate as Eudora Welty and William Goldman, comparisons are more closely drawn to Raymond Chandler's Philip Marlowe due to the author's pithy, "hardboiled" detective writing style and greater psychological nuance.

Despite Ross Macdonald's over forty novels, and despite several of them having been made into successful motion pictures in the 1960s such as HARPER starring Paul Newman, his reputation has waxed and waned. This may be because Macdonald eschewed the gritty big cities of Los Angeles and San Francisco where previous California detective writers had set their stories in favor of smaller, frequently pseudonymous locales, such as "Pacific Point" for La Jolla, or "Santa Teresa" (Santa Barbara). It would be a mistake, though, to assume that because Macdonald's novels take place in a more pleasant, suburban locale, that they lack depth. Natonal Public Radio, in a piece originally aired April 21, 2015 and entitled "Revisiting a Suburbia-Gone-Sour" mentioned the thematic influence Macdonald's novels have had on authors such as John Cheever, Tom Perrotta, and even the early seasons of television's MAD MEN. Other critics have commented favorably on the psychological depth of Macdonald's characters and the fact that his novels are a skillful blend of the "whodunit" and the psychological thriller. As such, his plot resolutions depend as much on insight into the characters (and their families) who serve as his clients as much as logic.

The Library of America has done the reading world a big favor with yesterday's publication of four Ross Macdonald novels: THE WAY SOME PEOPLE DIE, THE BARBAROUS COAST, THE DOOMSTERS, and THE GALTON CASE represent MacDonald's finest, though some aficionados might have wished that the theme had been stretched to 1961 to include THE WYCHERLY WOMAN. The generous (900-page) volume also includes some of Macdonald's nonfiction writings and a generous appraisal by editor Tom Nolan. While LoA volumes of this kind tend to feature thinnish paper and smallish type, this new volume is a fine bargain, especially in hardbound issue. It is also happy that the Library of America, in this publication, has put its imprimatur upon Ross Macdonald as a "serious" American writer. While this new issue may not greatly boost Ross Macdonald's readership or literary reputation (one thinks of LoA's two-volume treatment of Dawn Powell nearly fifteen years ago, which did neither), it is greatly welcome. Not just fans but newcomers too would do well to pick up FOUR NOVELS OF THE 1950s at this compelling price.

Please don't confuse Ross Macdonald with John Macdonald who also wrote detective novels which are good but not quite on the same

Raymond Chandler has passed the detective novel baton to Ross Macdonald. If he hadn't chosen crime fiction and detective stories, his writing would be considered right up there with the greats such as Falkner and Hemingway. Critics seem to look down at the detective genre but Macdonald's style is as well thought out as any of the greats. Please don't confuse Ross Macdonald with John Macdonald who also wrote detective novels which are good but not quite on the same level as Ross. Finally, to have an American Classic book in your hands with its legible typeface and book marker string makes the whole experience is a pleasure.

another great text by the team if Ruppert and Carroll

David Ruppert and Ray Carroll have been a research team for over 25 years. They have published many articles and books on regression analysis. These articles are always very clearly written and are great at showing the big picture and not just the nitty gritty details of the theorems that they prove. Two of my favorite books that they published are "Transformations and Weighting in Regression" published by Chapman & Hall in 1988 and "Measurement Error in Nonlinear Models " with Stefanski in 1995 and also published by Chapman & Hall.

This book is no exception. It is lucid in expostion and paints a general picture summarizing the area of nonparametric regression models and incorporating them with parametric regression both linear and nonlinear.

Their work has also been motivated by the desire to extend the theory of regression models to practical problems where the standard theory with assumptions such as linearity, normality, and homogeneity of variance don't hold.

In the first chapter, they motivate their methods through a number of examples in the areas of health science and environmental pollution problems. Chapter two goes through the standard linear regression models and the diagnostic checks for those models. They also cover other practical issues including model selection, use of transformations and extensions to nonlinear models. The special case of polynomial regression (a particular example of linear regression) is presented in detail.

Chapter 3 on scatterplot smoothing introduces many of the key ideas to their approach to semiparametric regression. Their approach in its most general form is based on mixed models which are introduced in chapter 4. Chapter 5 deals with automated methods for implementing the scatterplot smoothing techniques. The remaining chapters cover for example, simple semiparametric models, additive models, semiparametric mixed models, and generalized parametric models which include the very useful generalized linear models that they have extended to cover mixed effects.

The generalized additive models of Tibshirani and Hastie are covered in chapter 11, Other important issues including variance function estimation, accounting for measurement error, Bayesian approaches and more are covered in the latter chapters (12-17), Finally in chapter 18 seven examples are introduced to illustrate applications of the various methods. An epilogue, chapter 19, was written to motivate further research.

Many of these chapter are the subjects of whole monographs including some that Ruppert and Carroll have co-authored. In the preface they say that the book is intended for three potential audiences. The first audience is the students and scientists with interest in applying the techniques or learning about them but possess at most a moderate background in regression. The second audience (the group I would put myself in)are the biostatisticians ,econometricians and scientists in other disciplines who have a good working knowledge of regression and want to add the flexibility of semiparametric methods to their arsenal of techniques. The third group is the researchers in nonparametric regression who may not yet know about some of the new advances of Carroll, Ruppert and Wand that are included in this text.

I find in general that their books are masterpieces. As a statistician who has done both applied and theoretical work, I know what it takes to write books that summarize a body of theory or connect the theory and applications, or incorporate new results. These authors do both of these things in this book. They have the rare talent to find a way to unify and simplify existing theory and that is another great feature you will find in this book.

I haven't been able to do that and only a few others that I know can. One example that comes to my mind is the book on extremes by Leadbetter, Lindgren and Rootzen. At the time if of publication in 1978, they provided a unified theory for extremes combining the theory for independent and dependent cases. They also provide some examples in the bppk. But even that landmark book is heavily theoretical. Ruppert, Carroll and Wand emphasize applications and provide a number of examples throughout.

John Miller - New Yet Familiar Dramas

In the forward to John Miller’s collection of writings titled, The Ruin of Exchange/ And Other Writings on Art, Mike Kelley wrote, “John is a utopian, his basic worldview is Marxist, and he has a black sense of humor-generally delivered with a straight face. His sense of humor is more easily perceived in his visual artworks than in his writings, which are quite serious.” I would say, this is mostly correct, Mike, but, his artworks, which can be hysterical, are also delivered with a straight face. Overturned plastic trash cans, smeared plaster and brown acrylic as bad conscience, the collective we say, “NO”!

To the point of the serious writing; yes it is. John’s writing is analysis heavy in the territory of human-emotional economies as they spill around the site of the art work and reconstitute as both received hubris by an audience picking at fragments of clarity. And, as indicators of reinforcement that fuel the machine of history making. John’s analysis is always from a place we don’t expect even if calculated to come through the channel of intellectualized positioning. The fundamental departure point or the frame of his reference remains consistent throughout the entire collection of these essays, which could be very dry, but not here. They’re terrific fun and challenging. Like an episodic tv show that doesn’t stray too far from the essential plot line. So here we have new yet familiar dramas, I will call Departure-Marxism. How great - familiar yet new again.

This collection, these texts and ideas come from a good amount of John’s career. They are important to read now precisely because currently all we’re getting, all across the published scene from the broad array of populists’ who spit out so-called critical writing, is career gossip and money envy in the guise of sophistication. For me, having witnessed some of the events and some of the work John discusses, and I would assume for most of John’s readers, we say NO!

About the Author
Natalie J. Sayer began studying and applying Lean before it was formally known as Lean. Over her 20-year career in the automotive industry in the United States and Mexico, Natalie honed her skills applying Lean and Organizational Development methods across functional areas of Fortune 130 companies. In 1996, Natalie was an instrumental team member in the Lean transformation of a GM facility in Matamoros, Mexico. The team was awarded the 1996 GM President’s Council Honors for the project. While working with General Motors, she had multiple opportunities to visit and learn from New United Motor Manufacturing, Inc. (NUMMI). Natalie has trained, coached, mentored, and rolled up her sleeves to implement Lean practices, whether working in a company or volunteering at a food bank.
She received a Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering from the University of Dayton in 1988 and a Master of Manufacturing Systems Engineering from the University of Michigan in 1992. She is a graduate of Coach University and Corporate Coach University. Natalie is also a Six Sigma Black Belt and a Global Leadership Executive Coach.
In 2003, Natalie founded I-Emerge, an Arizona-based global consultancy dedicated to the facilitation of people and processes experiencing significant change. The I-Emerge toolbox includes executive and personal coaching, group facilitation, Lean methods, public speaking, and Organizational Development tools and assessments. She is a passionate people person, who lives her life with the convictions that “there is always a better way” and “change won’t happen without the people.”

Bruce Williams strives for perfection and added value as a scientist, educator, consultant, and entrepreneur. Leveraging the Lean principle of standardized work, this is his third For Dummies book in three years, having previously coauthored the best-selling Six Sigma For Dummies in 2005 and the Six Sigma Workbook For Dummies in 2006.

Holy Grail of Kaizen books I've been looking for!

I run a jewelry business, and we actually sell right here on Amazon. Since we process & ship our inventory to Amazon's warehouses (via the Fulfillment by Amazon program for 3rd Party Sellers), a system to improve our accuracy and reduce our packaging time was DESPERATELY needed.

So I've been trying to find a book that broke down Lean Principles & basic inventory control for a very long time, and I've bought about 6-8 kindle books on the topic. Everything I'd find was way too abstract and assumed too much knowledge on my part, which has been extremely frustrating. As a reader, especially a reader of business books, I could absolutely care less about history and establishing the credibility of Lean/Kaizen/etc. I buy that this is a good system already-get to the MEAT of the subject that's gonna make me some MONEY! (If you think about it, bloated information is, in and of itself, the opposite of a "lean").

Anyways, I've been able to make a FEW meager changes in my company. I was thrilled with the results and naturally desired a "manual" to make my commitment to the Lean way of doing things as complete as possible.

This book breaks it down so beautifully. I could absolutely follow the concepts, and it didn't assume too much business experience on my part. Not only that, the info is totally practical and I'm extremely excited to implement it.

The last book I read that was this helpful was "Nail It & Scale It," and it totally changed my business for the better. "Lean for Dummies" is similarly useful and is definitely the book I've been desperately looking for on this topic. I honestly can't say enough good things about it.

I highly recommend it to anyone who is interested in Lean, Kaizen, or just wants more inventory/management/leadership skills and knowledge.

Just what I needed!

I work for a bunch of clowns who like to like to walk around talking manager-speak but what they say has no substance. They've managed to confuse everyone because they, themselves, are confused about Lean. I can't get any solid answers to my questions and when I ask 5 different people the same question I get 5 different answers! So, I bought this book and WALAH! FINALLY...I now have a clear understanding about Lean. This book, coupled with "The Toyota Way", is making it all come together for me in a clear and concise manner that I can follow easily. I highly recommend Lean For Dummies. It is well-written at a perfect pace and it is full of easy-to-understand examples from our everyday world. Sadly, since the management where I work is worthless, this book serves as my Lean mentor, and it's doing a great job! This book has made it possible for me to move forward with Lean in a determined, decisive and deliberate way, which is how I love to work.

I love this one and want to share it firm wide, but I can't get past the title...it just doesn't send a great message if you pass out a book to all employees and you refer to them all as dummies. Need to consider having another line called something else. Granted it's been a great branding effort, so I know it's comprehensive and quality - but the name kills me. Love, love, love the content inside though. I needed to get up the curve quick and this book delivered!

"TobakkoNacht -- The Antismoking Endgame" is intended to be a followup to the more introductory level "Dissecting Antismokers' Brains."   The two books are meant to complement each other, with "TobakkoNacht" being the better choice for those who've been previously involved in smoking ban battles and who are familiar with most of the basic arguments and strategems used by antismoking organizations in pushing for bans, taxes, and other programs designed to eventually reduce the number of smokers to the point where they can be simply eliminated (or close to it) through outright Prohibition laws.        If you do not have such a background, you might still get a lot out of reading "TobakkoNacht" as you will see both the motivations for opposing antismoking measures and detailed analyses of the tactics, misdirections, and lies used to promote the achievement of  a "smoker-free world."  In particular you will find careful examinations of the claims and studies that have been held up and often produced and promoted in the media by antismoking organizations themselves.  You'll also find analyses that show the tricks used, sometimes statistical, sometimes linguistic, and sometimes simply emotional -- that appeal to our basic biological instincts of caring for our young or reacting to fears for our own lives.         People can be easily manipulated in both their actions and their thoughts if they are consistently and repeatedly exposed to only one side of an argument, and, unfortunately, that's been largely the case in the smoking arena.  "TobakkoNacht" and "Dissecting" are meant to provide a balance for that, and anyone who finds their job, their housing, or their personal relationships at risk due to antismoking pressures should most definitely consider arming themselves with both books under their belts.          For those who'd like a larger sampling of the thinking that serves as background to these books, I'd recommend my writings on Quora, my excerpts on the TobakkoNacht website itself, and my record of several thousand postings available for reading in my disqus profile.

About the Author
Michael J. McFadden's "Dissecting Antismokers' Brains" has served as an inspiration and handbook for the Free Choice movement in its battle with antismoking forces and their never-ending efforts to raise tobacco taxes and implement more extreme smoking bans. "TobakkoNacht - The Antismoking Endgame" complements his earlier work by providing a toolbox, armory, and map for carrying the fight into and through the second decade of the 2000s.         Mr. McFadden grew up in Brooklyn, graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Manhattan College's Peace Studies and Psychology programs, and won a full fellowship to the Wharton School's doctoral program in Peace Science to study statistics and propaganda analysis.        He left Penn after two years of work toward a doctorate to host a Quaker training center in non-violent activism and has worked at various levels in the areas of peace activism and social change ever since. His activities have ranged from ecologically-friendly transport advocacy to being formally commissioned by Queen Elizabeth II to plan and conduct nonviolence training workshops in Canada. He has worked as a lab tech, peace canvasser, online conference coordinator with CNN, and a free-lance book editor. He serves without compensation on the Boards of Directors of both The International Coalition Against Prohibition and FORCES International, and works with many grassroots Free Choice groups.        He currently lives and bicycles in West Philadelphia where he shares a small row house with a psychotic cat, a quiet squirrel, and assorted other creatures.

Clarion Call on the Attack on Personal Liberty

Mr. McFadden has written an insightful and alarming book on how and why a personal freedom to consume a legal product has been perpetrated upon the American public with parallels on how the systemaic genocide of the Third Reich spread through Europe with very little resistance.

It disturbs me greatly that Americans, even those who smoke, do not put up more of a fight to be able to enjoy a smoke in a bar along with a drink rather than be ostrasized to huddle outdoors, especially in cold weather. I also hate to see business owners' property rights trampled when they are banned from allowing their customers to smoke indoors.

Mr. McFadden's well-researched work goes behind the superficial headlines and into the playbook of the anti-smoking movement.

And for those who think they are unaffected because they don't smoke, beware because there is probably something you enjoy that is next on the hit list of the social engineers who they know what is best for you and society.

Tobakkonacht...the other half of the story is finally in the open

Every great debate has two sides, and the smoking debate is no exception. If you watch TV or read the newspaper, chances are you've only ever heard one side. This book concentrates on the secondhand smoke aspect, taking the oft-repeated claim that secondhand smoke is a killer and blowing it wide open. The author takes apart two decades of heavily biased studies on secondhand smoke and exposes their innards (or lack thereof.) He also illustrates how the smoking debate and smoking bans are big business, and how the so-called "grassroots" antismoking movement isn't quite what it appears to be. A bit technical at times, humorous at others, it's overall a fascinating read.

More delightful dissection by Michael J. McFadden, who has to be one of the foremost chroniclers of the latest installment of the "Great American Witch Hunt". McFadden combines the debunking statistics common to such works with whimsical humor, some very far-out speculative fiction and even biographical notes. I would never have imagined a champion of smokers' rights to have once been someone who found tobacco smoke unpalatable, but in fact it's so!
Not everything clicks, unfortunately. One of Mc Fadden's imaginings features a Nazi-style persecution of smokers (the title is a riff on "Kristallnacht"), which I think is a bit extreme, as antismokers have not succeeded in turning the general, non-smoking public into smoke-hating bigots. But, hey, you never know.
"TobakkoNacht" also provides some very useful rebuttal points for those interested in openly resisting the well-funded (McFadden reveals from where) crusade against smoking. We learn all the tricks of the trade and rational fallacies employed by the antismokers in order to refute them. We see how the rationales for anti-tobacco legislation shift over time, from "health" to "cost of health care" to "litter" to "workers' safety" to "protecting the children". McFadden is particularly acidic in his denunciation of those who metaphorically hold children in front of them as human shields in order to advance their puritanical agenda.
In short, "TobbakoNacht" is that holy grail of nonfiction we all seek: it's informative, entertaining and useful, all in one modest volume.
