About the Author
Robert White worked in the library, archive and museum sector for many years, and now edits a magazine using Open Source software. He spent a year at Oxford, has a Bachelor’s degree in History and Literature, and maintains a keen interest in the field of technical communication. He has also written a visitor’s guide for the heritage sector.

Very handy

It's nice to be able to flip lots of pages at once, so having this book is somewhat better than trying to learn everything on lines.

like learning a new program

Once again, the authors seem to lose sight of who or what a beginner really is. Before explaining further, let me use this analogy: I've shown you the "Chilton's Manual" on your car, which explains every possible part and option, now go get your first driver's license. Won't work? Why not? Because driving, like learning a new program, takes repetitive practice, not long theoretical explanations of what each part does. Example: The books tells me "Layers" are possible but nowhere explains why I would want to use them! Let's continue the analogy;
Now that I've shown you all of your car parts and explained all they do, let's further confuse the issue by teaching you the theory of getting a Commercial Driver's License while applying for the previous first license. GIMP? No, I don't want to edit photos, I want to publish a newsletter from my desktop computer! When I'm ready for GIMP, I'll buy that user's manual (which is also that convoluted, by the way).
Back to the drawing board, guys. Limit your explanations of what the program CAN do and explain to me which tools I need for a true beginner to complete several small beginner projects. Take the extra space you wasted on GIMP and use those pages to walk me through (figuratively, "Press here, click there to achieve this...")
Very good (not "excellent") book for someone with experience in Indesign or Aldus Pagemaker, but not a true "Beginner's" book.

Clearly not for "Beginners"

I really do appreciate it very much when someone decides to devote his time to support open source projects, even if the support itself is commercial. But when I buy a commercial item or service, I expect some value for my money.
While I will not say that this book is bad in itself, its title - Beginning Scribus - is clearly misleading. Instead of introducing the new user to Scribus in any meaningful way, the author is just describing every single element or function Scribus has to offer, without putting it into the necessary context a new user needs. Just have a quick look at the TOC and you will understand what I mean.
So, if I should rate this book by its title, the two stars I'm giving it are even high. I am not advanced enough yet with Scribus to tell you if this book will be of value to people transitioning from other programs but I guess it might.
For now, I will stick to other learning materials. Once I went through an actual introduction to Scribus, I still might revisit this title.
