About the Author
Dr. Dong-Wook Song is the course coordinator of Maritime Log and Supply Chain at Heriot-Watt University. Prior to the current post, he worked at the University of Hong Kong. He holds a PhD in Maritime Transport and Logistics from the University of Plymouth.
Dr. Photis M. Panayides is Associate Professor in Shipping Economics, Department of Commerce, Finance and Shipping at Cyprus University of Technology.

Quite Interesting Book

Although I really enjoyed the book, I must inform that it is not a complete guide to port management as its title suggests. In this regard, I did not see any deeper reference to ERP systems used in port management, this topic being of great interest to me.
At any rate, each chapter of the book is full of comprehensive bibliographical references that might help readers to carrying out further studies as for specific topics. In addition, every item of information supplied along the book is supported by those references. In this connection, the book has a look of an academic work.
Maritime Logistics was written by many hands, although Drs. Song and Panayides were the main members of the team. State-of-the-art concepts are examined throughout the book, so that every reader will certainly observe it is a very updated work. In my view, Maritime Logistics and Cargo Work by D. House are quite useful sources of information in the area of maritime logistics, those books being complementary to each other.
Finally, please note there is a difference of scope between logistics and supply chain management, but sometimes those concepts are used interchangeably. The above book approach, however, is mostly under a supply chain perspective. In chapter 15, a detailed literature review is supplied concerning the SCM approach.

Take the Book in Context

This book is a basic introduction to the state-of-the-art in current maritime logistics. The general reader can easily follow the chapters and understand how the maritime industry works on a number of different levels. That said, the chapters are academic in approach, but the content is relevant and useful. I found it very inforamtive and interesting. It brought me up to date quickly and has made me somewhat conversant, and certainly more aware of this needed industry.
