Where making pictures was and where art is these days

I am the product of both art school studio and college art history courses and this book beats any I have seen! The conversation format between artist and critic works well--and there are illustrations of almost everything they mention. Anybody who takes photographs, paints, or uses an app on an iPad should love this book and find it changes their perspective on art!

Fascinating, and the best of all worlds, a scholarly book that reads as a conversation. Years of Art School and Art History, not to mention scads of art books and monographic studies, this volume shines brightly. Great information, thoughts and insights. I found the combination of Hockney and Gayford to be brilliant, stimulating and difficult to put down.

Nice book, wish it had more Hockney opinion and writings than it does

Wish it had more Hockney and less Gayford. Gayford tends to dominate the writing and opinion (shocking!) instead of my wanting to hear more from Hockney and his thoughts. I'm generally overall pleased with the product though and any Hockney fan will like his observations... when he gets them in.

“ I’m happy and grateful my headache will go away” with other ...

My name is Joyce A. Ashby and I have a testimonial to doing tapping. I watched a few video’s online to find out how to do the EFT Tapping, and started doing it on mine own. If I can do it so can you.. a bit of studying and reading the books helps also. I had a sore shoulder from something that I did that I’m not to sure how, but I did tapping on it twice a day for 1 week straight and the soreness went away! I just could not believe how well it works. I later did tapping on my allergy’s that I have had for over 25 years. I followed what I have learned about how to find out what emotion that is attached to it. Asking questions as I went, and out of the blue an emotion popped in my head, and I worked on that. I started to cry, but kept on going. I noticed that over the last few months that I have done the tapping about my allergy’s my sinus started draining down the back of my throat. At first I thought it was just a fluky thing, but it happened every time I tapped on my allergy’s. I do it at night most of the time, and it also helps me fall asleep. I pass the information on to as many people that I get in contact with that have pain, or other issues. I’m so very THANKFUL to Nick and his sister for the work that they do, and sharing with us the information online, and in the books. I know at first, I was a bit skeptical about doing the tapping because it sounded odd, but I just did it and saw RESULTS!! Some things may take longer to do. When I get a headache I tap as soon as I can with a lot of positive words as I tap. I try to say, “ I’m happy and grateful my headache will go away” with other positive words. Each situation is different. To me with having allergy’s for so long I had to find the emotion that went with it, and tap through that and than go from there. When you don’t have to take drugs to feel better that is the BEST thing ever! Amen to Nick and Jessica for all the help they do.. I love you and I am so glad that I learned about EFT (tapping) thank you from the bottom of my heart!

I have been following tapping for a little while now, dabbling here and there. With this book I am finally giving it my whole effort. With REALLY giving it a chance I am seeing results. This really works. It amazes me that something so simple just works like magic! The book teaches of the connections between body, emotions, and stress that all cause pain, then tapping away those emotions and stresses. Love that it is helping with the bulging disc pain in my back. I really have not wanted to go the surgery route and now I don't have too.

Yes! It works, and now you've found it!!

I've known about EFT for years and have found it very helpful; but the way it was taught back then included some pretty complicated diagnostics, and different 'algorithms' for each condition or problem. It was a LOT to take in, especially if you're already stressed or hurting.

Which is why I am so impressed with this book! Nick has honed and simplified this technique in a truly inspired way. The EFT series he teaches is both easy to learn and amazingly effective. You don't have to be an expert; from the very first time, you'll be able to see--and FEEL--the difference.

CHAPTER 1
The SHRED Concept
 
 
SHRED is a revolutionary diet plan that combines several different strategies in an effort to help users lose weight, increase confidence, and improve overall wellness. Unlike many other programs that simply focus on how many pounds are lost on the scale, SHRED also improves other health factors, such as reducing risk for high blood pressure, decreasing the risk for diabetes, and improving energy levels. With so many programs available it is reasonable to ask why one would choose SHRED over another popular diet. The answer is simple. SHRED allows you to eat normal food that’s inexpensive. It is extremely simple to understand, and it does not require perfection for you to find success. Another important aspect that many SHREDDERs have liked is that the diet can be customized based on the results you’re looking for or any dietary preferences you might have. You will find that making substitutions while SHREDDING is not only allowed but encouraged, as it will not impede your success in any way.
There are many programs that can help you lose weight, but there are few that combine the appropriate balance of challenging you while at the same time not making it too difficult to follow for the long term. One major problem with many diet plans is that while they can help users lose weight, they are so extreme, difficult, or uncomfortable that dieters are unable to follow the guidelines for an extended period of time. The second you stop following the plan, the pounds that were lost pile back on with a vengeance, and often, then some. This is not the case with SHRED. The vast majority of those surveyed who tried the early versions of the program repeatedly commented that unlike other plans they had tried, SHRED was one they could see themselves following forever.
There are many principles at work in SHRED that lead to the tremendous success that so many experience. Ease of use is at the top of the list: each day is thoughtfully planned out so that your need to think about what works and what doesn’t is kept to a minimum. Ironically, many who have been asked about programs that give them the greatest level of flexibility in choosing the foods they can eat say that too much flexibility can actually make the diet more difficult. It’s a struggle to have so many choices in front of them. SHRED spells out in detail each meal you will consume for six weeks, but it also gives you plenty of room to make substitutions so that you can swap out meals if you like.
SHRED is a six-week program. You may well stay on SHRED for more than six weeks, but each six weeks is considered to be a cycle. Based on the hundreds of SHREDDERs who have tried the program and provided feedback, the average weight loss for a cycle is between 18 and 25 pounds. Results, as with any diet program, will vary from person to person for various reasons, but more than with any diet I’ve developed or been aware of, what has been amazingly satisfying is how consistent the weight loss has been. Ninety-three percent of the people who have been on the program have lost weight each week of the cycle. Even better, many who had been using other diet plans and had hit a plateau found that just a week on SHRED got them losing weight again.
In general, those who are closer to their target weight will definitely lose weight but tend to lose weight a little more slowly. This is to be expected, so if you fall into this category, don’t be disappointed if you don’t see the numbers on the scale drop quickly or significantly at first. Look for any progress, whether it be increased energy or losing inches. However, those who have more than 30 pounds to lose will typically start seeing results right away. The average results on SHRED are 6-4-2. In six weeks most people who closely follow the program lose four inches and two sizes.
Once you have completed an initial six-week cycle, if you still have more weight to lose, the program is designed for you to cycle again. After the first cycle, you can reorder the weeks of a new cycle in any fashion that works best for you. This is only one way in which SHRED can be customized to fit your needs. I recognize that there’s no such thing as “one size fits all” when it comes to diet plans, but SHRED comes close.
SHRED CYCLES
Each week of SHRED is designed to stand on its own and to be different from the weeks before. Each of the six weeks has a name that reflects the theme for that week. The weeks are Prime, Challenge, Transformation, Ascend, Cleanse, and Explode. While each week represents a leg in your journey, it also builds on those that precede it. The program teaches you how to make smarter choices and has specific strategies embedded in the daily meal and exercise plans: sometimes you will recognize them and other times you will not. The overall effect, however, is that you will continuously SHRED fat. You will see the declining numbers on the scale and a reduction in inches wherever you need to lose them: whether it be in your waist, thighs, or hips.
It has been my experience that programs that start out asking followers to make extreme changes in their dietary and/or exercise habits are least effective over the long term. Users either can never fully engage the program, because it’s asking too much of them, or they are able to do some of the program but not all of it, leading them to become discouraged and drop out altogether. SHRED acknowledges some very basic facts. First, losing weight is not easy and quite often is extremely frustrating. Second, no one is a perfect eater or exerciser and expecting someone—anyone—to be perfect and not have bad days is completely unrealistic. Third, success comes from following a program that one can ease into, rather than a program that starts out too aggressively rigorous and restrictive. People don’t always want to feel like they’re on a diet!
Prime. These seven days prime you for the rest of the plan. This week is an induction into SHREDDER Nation. You’ll learn about the importance of meal spacing, proper snacking techniques, and suppressing hunger without consuming too many calories. The average weight loss this week will be 3.5 pounds. This could be less if you’re within 20 pounds of your goal weight. The further you are away from your target weight and the worse your habits have been prior to starting the program, the more weight you will lose. Many who fit this description have lost as much as 8 to 10 pounds during Prime. One hundred percent of the people who have been on the program—regardless of how much weight they needed to lose—answered in their survey that they had enough to eat, some going so far as to say that there was so much food they couldn’t manage to eat everything on the daily menus.
Challenge is a week that asks you to demand more of yourself. It asks you to release some of your bad habits and adopt some new behaviors that you will have for the rest of your life. This week says that you can do better: you’ll learn after a couple of days that despite early doubts you might have about yourself, you actually can rise to the challenge. This week is a confidence booster, because it shows many dieters that despite their failures in the past or what they have previously perceived to be difficult, they actually have what it takes to succeed. At the end of the Challenge you will be motivated more than ever to truly make a commitment to a healthier lifestyle and to reach the goals you have set forth prior to starting your SHRED.
Transformation week is a critical seven days where most SHREDDERs start truly noticing a difference. Not only will the scale reflect your hard work, but many realize for the first time at the end of this week that they have dropped a clothing size, their energy levels are much greater, and their outlook about their success on the program heightens dramatically. Transformation is designed to be the toughest week of the program. You will be challenged the most during this week, but it’s nothing you can’t handle. Knowing this week is the toughest is half the battle. The other half is putting your head down and getting through it. If you focus, this week will be your best friend. Every day visualize the fat being SHREDDED and your body’s appearance changing.
Ascend is an important turnaround week. Imagine that for the last three weeks you have been descending into a pit. Last week you finally reached the bottom and started to regain strength so that you can climb your way out. The seven days of Ascend have been specifically constructed so that you are now exiting the darkness and ascending toward the light. You have already completed the toughest week of the program, so Ascend will come as a relief. You will continue to work hard, but the work will not feel as strenuous as it did the week before. Reinvigorated after three weeks on the program, you are now energized to finish the rest of the cycle at full speed.
Cleanse is a week that pays special attention to enhancing your liver’s ability to detoxify your blood. All of us—even those who eat as healthfully as possible—accumulate some level of toxins in our bodies. We want to eliminate these toxins as efficiently as possible. Sometimes livers can be overwhelmed, so occasionally it’s beneficial to give them a little boost in carrying out their jobs. Certain foods can provide this boost by activating special enzymes in the liver that facilitate the cleansing process. There are also foods that work to increase the activity of the gastrointestinal tract. This creates a physical cleanse. This week you will do both. Not only will you improve your physical health this week, but you will continue your weight loss: some will lose their largest amounts during these seven days.
Explode is the last week of the cycle. It’s meant to help you end the cycle with a bang. For some, this week will be their last and they will have reached their goal. For others, Explode is a launch...

A Lifestyle plan that works regardless of age or size

SHRED has changed my life in a dramatic way. Before I started SHRED I was on another program where I had lost 40 pounds and had been on a plateau for over a month. I started with Shred in August while following Dr. Ian on twitter and here I am in December 45 pounds lighter and beginning to live the best years of my life. I am 54 years old and have never felt this great as far back as I can remember and I am talking at least for the past 25 to 30 years. This is no joke, my health has taken a dramatic turn, I went from high cholesterol (265 highest ever) now to 188, high blood pressure to normal blood pressure, size 24/26 to size 18/16, pre-diabetes to normal glucose levels and from basically no exercising (use to hate it) to exercising at least 6 days a week. Shredding has taught me what is the best and healthiest way to eat when I am eating out and my portions have become smaller. I am never hungry cause I am in the habit of eating 4 small meals a day plus my snacks. The foods you eat are affordable and found in your local grocery stores. There are no gimmicks or quick fix with Shred, it's a way of life and something you can live with everyday. This is a plan that I have incorporated in my household and now we all are eating healthier, working out together and living a healthier lifestyle. The book is easy to read, the instructions are easy to follow. My first month on Shred I had lost 27 pounds which is a miracle and this was done by eating 4 small meals a day plus healthy snacks and starting with cardio (walking, Zumba and elliptical). I would highly recommend this book to those who want to live a healthier life, eating the right way and the benefits will be 20 pounds in 6 weeks. It works and the awesome thing about Shred, it is affordable and all foods are easily accessible. I am no celebrity, a single middle class mom/grandmother who took the wisdom of Dr. Ian and made it worked for me. By this summer I plan on being at my goal weight and intend on keeping it off because I have found a plan that I love and enjoy doing. The book is worth buying and you will find it useful as you pursue your dream of being a healthier/slimmer person. Get the book and start shredding.

a great book on secretive industry

Merchants of Grain is a detailed and alluring account of five very secretive but very large companies that are in the center of the world's food supply: Cargill, Continental, Louis Dreyfus, Bunge, and Andre. All of these companies are as dominating today as they were 25-50-75-100 years ago.

Up until 10 years ago, all five were private (Bunge is now public). One thing has stayed consistent, all of the companies still fly under the radar and are still very much family owned. For example, Simon Fribourg started Continental Grain Company in 1813, and today a Fribourg (Paul Fribourg is the Chairman & CEO) still runs the company. Continental is one of the largest companies in the world.

Although the book was written in 1979, I'm sure not that much has changed in regards to the big five's size and importance to the food supply. In 1974 for example, Cargill's share of American food exports was barley (42%), Oats (32%), Wheat (29%), Sorghum (22%), Soybeans (18%), and Corn (16%). Abroad, the big five domination of the grain trade was even more impressive, controlling 90% of Canada's barley exports, 80% of Argentina's wheat exports, 90% of Australia's sorghum exports. Again, this was in 1974, but I'm sure they still control a vast amount of food resources.

Today, Cargill is the largest private company in the US employing 142,000 people in 65 countries with annual revenues of $133 billion in 2012. Bunge (now public) employs 35,000 in 40 countries with annual revenues of $60 billion. Louis Dreyfus employs 35,000 in 53 countries with annual revenues of $50 billion. The point is these companies are still around and thriving, as they were a generation or two ago.

On the worldwide stage, Grain is as important as Oil. Merchants of Grain provides a captivating history lesson on how these companies got their start and events that transpired throughout the 1900's that allowed them to grow, prosper, and dominate the grain trade.

The historical background in this book is useful in describing the origins of the large, private companies that dominate the world grain trade.

Some of the vignettes are worth collecting, as are some of the insights into the opaque world of the grain magnates.

The book runs out of steam, though, and the last third is dreadfully droll and, to make matters even worse, badly dated. The author's Washington Post-style (i.e., oatmeal) policy suggestions are vastly inadequate in comparison to the power of the behemoths that he has spent the entire book describing.

Read the first half or two thirds.

Outdated, but still pertinent

The 70s were a sort of peak of investigative journalism in America. This is a product of that time. Unfortunately for the modern reader, many of the facts and characters happened 30-odd years ago. I think it was partially inspired by the Soviet grain shipments which caused all that political ruckus in the 70s. The Soviet Union doesn't even exist any more. Some of the commodity trading companies described in this book have since gone public with IPOs (Bunge, for example). None the less, the history of some of the secretive grain and commodity families is still pertinent. Andre, Continental, Cargill and Louis Dreyfus are still privately held corporations who control much of world agribusiness. The way multinational corporations interact with politicians is still pertinent. The commodity exchanges still work much the same way.
Want to understand the weird way the world works? This isn't a bad place to start. For folks interested in commodity trading, this is a must-read to understand who some of the counterparties are in speculative trades, and how the mechanics of the grain trade works. For folks interested in politics; this is a must read for understanding, well, politics.
It's an eerie feeling googling up information on some of the companies and families mentioned here, and drawing only a few sparse wikipedia entries and conspiracy theories.
It's a shame that there isn't more out there like this, perhaps detailing what other privately held companies are up to. Alas, we will have to wait for a new golden age of investigative journalism for this to happen, if it ever happens.

About the Author
Linda L. Barkacs received her J.D. from the University of San Diego in 1993. She also has a B.A. in political science from San Diego State University and an A.A. in accounting from Irvine Valley College. Upon graduating from law school and passing the California bar exam, Professor Barkacs became an associate at a downtown San Diego law firm. During that time she was involved in a number of high-profile trials, including a sexual harassment case against the City of Oceanside that resulted in a $1.2 million verdict. In 1997, Professor Barkacs and her husband Craig (also a professor at USD) started their own law firm specializing in business and civil litigation (in both federal and state courts), employment law cases, and appeals. They were also involved in numerous mediations and arbitrations. Professor Barkacs began teaching at USD in 1997 and went full-time in Spring 2002. She is now a tenured Associate Professor of Business Law. As an educator, she has designed and taught numerous courses on law, ethics, and negotiation. She teaches in USD’s undergraduate and graduate programs, including the Master of Science in Executive Leadership (a Ken Blanchard program), the Master of Science in Global Leadership, the Master of Science in Real Estate, and the Master of Science in Supply Chain Management. Professor Barkacs often teaches in USD’s study-abroad classes and has traveled extensively throughout Europe, Asia, and South America. Professor Barkacs has received numerous awards for her teaching at USD, including the 2008 USD Outstanding Undergraduate Business Educator; 2008 and 2007 Professor of the Year, USD Senior Class (universitywide); 2007 Creative and Innovative Teaching Award, Academy of Education Leadership (national); and 2009 and 2010 nominee for U.S. Professor of the Year (Carnegie Foundation). She and her husband are principals in The Barkacs Group (www.tbgexecutivetraining.com), a consulting firm that provides negotiation, ethics, and team training for the private sector. Professor Barkacs has published numerous journal articles in the areas of law, ethics, and negotiation. She and her husband are coauthoring a book on negotiation. She has been the president, vice president, conference chair, and treasurer of the Pacific Southwest Academy of Legal Studies in Business (www.pswalsb.net). Professor Barkacs currently spends her time teaching, publishing, consulting for The Barkacs Group, and doing volunteer work for various civic causes. She enjoys walking, weight lifting, and spending her free time with her husband Craig and their three cats, Phoenix, Violet, and Vanessa.


Nancy K. Kubasek received her J.D. from the University of Toledo College of Law in 1981 and her B.A. from Bowling Green State University in 1978. She joined the BGSU faculty in 1982, became an associate professor in 1988, and became a full professor in 1993. During her tenure at Bowling Green State University, she has primarily taught courses in business law, legal environment of business, environmental law, health care law, and moral principles. She has published over 75 articles, primarily in law reviews and business journals. Most of her substantive articles focus on environmental questions. She has helped get students involved in legal research, and a number of her articles have been coauthored with students. She has also published a number of pedagogical articles in teaching journals, focusing primarily on the teaching of critical thinking and ethics. She wrote the first environmental law text for undergraduate students, Environmental Law, and coauthored The Legal Environment of Business: A Critical Thinking Approach. She has written supplemental materials, such as study guides, test banks, and instructors’ manuals. Active in many professional organizations, she has served as president of the Academy of Legal Studies in Business, the national organization for professors of legal studies in colleges of business. She has also served as president of the Tri-State Academy of Legal Studies in Business, her regional professional association. In her leisure time, she and her husband, Neil Browne, fish for halibut and salmon in Alaska, as well as largemouth bass in Florida. In addition, they are regular participants in polka, waltz, zydeco, and Cajun dance festivals in Europe and the United States. For almost 30 years, they have been successful tournament blackjack players. Both are avid exercisers―lifting weights, doing yoga, and running almost every day.

M. Neil Browne is a senior lecturer and Distinguished Teacher Professor of Economics and Law emeritus at Bowling Green State University. He received his B.A. in history and economics at the University of Houston, his Ph.D. in economics at the University of Texas, and his J.D. from the University of Toledo. He has been a professor at Bowling Green for more than five decades. Professor Browne teaches courses in economics and law, legal research, jurisprudence, ethical reasoning, critical thinking, and economics at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. He has received recognition as the Silver Medalist National Professor of the Year, the Ohio Professor of the Year, and Distinguished Teacher and Master Teacher at Bowling Green State University, as well as numerous research awards from his university and from professional organizations. His consulting activities with corporate, governmental, and educational institutions focus on improving the quality of critical thinking in those organizations. In addition, he serves as a Rule 26 expert with respect to the quality of the reasoning used by expert witnesses called by the party opponent in legal actions. Professor Browne has published 35 books and over 160 professional articles in law journals, as well as in economics, sociology, and higher-education journals. His current research interests focus on the relationship between orthodox economic thinking and legal policy. In addition, he is in the midst of writing books about the power of questionable assumptions in economics, the usefulness of asking questions as a learning strategy, and the deficiencies of legal reasoning.

Daniel J. Herron is a professor of business legal studies in the Richard T. Farmer School of Business at his undergraduate alma mater, Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in English. He earned his law degree from Case Western Reserve University School of Law in Cleveland and is a member of the Ohio and federal bars. His research includes articles on business ethics plus a variety of “business and law” topics. In addition to his teaching and scholarly publications, he founded in 1994, and since then has been coaching, the James Lewis Family Mock Trial Program at Miami, a consistent top-10 program in a field of more than 300 mock trial programs nationwide. Before coming to Miami in 1992, he taught at Bowling Green State University, the University of Wyoming, the University of North Carolina–Wilmington, and Western Carolina University. He has been married for over 35 years to Deborah, and they have two children, Christopher (married to Amanda) and Elisabeth (married to Mark). They have four grandchildren―Jack, Nate, Samantha, and Wesley―plus two rambunctious beagles, Max and Missy.

Lucien J. Dhooge is the Sue and John Staton Professor of Law at the Scheller College of Business at the Georgia Institute of Technology, where he teaches international business law and ethics and serves as the area coordinator in law and ethics. Prior to his tenure at the Georgia Institute of Technology, Professor Dhooge practiced law for 11 years and served on the faculty of the University of the Pacific in California for 12 years. He has authored more than 50 scholarly articles, coauthored and contributed to 13 books, and is a past editor in chief of the American Business Law Journal and the Journal of Legal Studies Education. Professor Dhooge has presented courses and research throughout the United States, as well as in Asia, Europe, and Central and South America, and has received numerous research and teaching awards, including seven Ralph C. Hoeber Awards for excellence in published research. After completing an undergraduate degree in history at the University of Colorado, Professor Dhooge earned his J.D. from the University of Denver College of Law and his LL.M. from the Georgetown University Law Center.

Although clinical research has been conducted on narcissism as a disorder, less is known about its effects on victims who are in toxic relationships with partners with Narcissistic Personality Disorder. Individuals with this disorder engage in chronic devaluation and manipulation of their partners, a psychological and emotional phenomenon known as "narcissistic abuse". Unfortunately, the full extent of what narcissistic abuse entails is not taught in any psychology class or diagnostic manual. Excellent, Well-Researched and Very Helpful Book!

I have read 50+ books on narcissistic personality disorder, narcissistic abuse, domestic abuse, trauma, PTSD, etc. This book is one of the best. Ms. Arabi is an excellent, thorough and insightful researcher and journalist. She lays the groundwork for recovery by explaining the impact of narcissistic abuse, synthesizing those truths with provocative insights from leading scholars and then offering practical suggestions and methods of recovery.

This book is extremely well-documented and well-researched. Arabi not only addresses NPD and narcissistic abuse but delves into PTSD/CPTSD, citing the works of renowned experts such as Judith Herman, M.D., author of the foundational book “Trauma and Recovery,” and Patrick Carnes, Ph.D. (“The Betrayal Bond”). She also ties in the work of Bessel van der Kolk M.D., who in his book “The Body Keeps the Score” reveals how trauma rewires the the brain, along with dozens of other sources, both classic and contemporary.

Each chapter of Arabi’s book features an impressive endnotes section as well as links to articles, podcasts and social media resources. She manages to combine all these sources into a comprehensive and revealing look at narcissistic abuse and its effects on the survivor. She then offers practical tips and alternatives for recovering from the trauma of narcissistic abuse. I was personally inspired and motivated by her creative recommendations for recovery – I even surprised myself by experimenting with the guided meditation links and redoubling my commitment to doing Zumba four times a week. And I haven’t even finished reading the book!

Interesting read..

I've been reading a lot about narcissism after encountering it first in a patient's mom then recognizing it in my own mom and also seeing some of it in my siginificant other and now in myself. While some narcissists are truly monsters, often others develop it as a result of abuse/neglect in reaction to criticism and/or lack of love & validation. One excerpt reads: "They are never satisfied and they will constantly blame you for their dissatisfaction. They will never be satisfied with what they have, unless they have a complete doormat that turn a blind eye to their affairs, crimes and indiscretions. And even when they do have that doormat, they end up abusing and exploiting that person regardless, treating that person with contempt for being so “foolish” to believe in them. You’re damned if you do and damned if you do when it comes to a narcissistic partner."
And I would like to offer some insight: it is true that they are never satisfied and you are damned if you do and damned if you don't. They are unable to have self-acceptance, which gives rise the construction of the false self ego. It was taught that they are never good enough resulting in receiving criticism. They need a 'doormat' to give them the love and acceptance they lack for themselves and never received in childhood. However, they hate themselves so much that they resent (exploit/abuse) you if you give it, because you must be a fool to think they deserve love and/or acceptance--'Can't you see I'm a monster?! Can't you see how much of a worthless piece of trash I am? You're an idiot for thinking I deserve to be loved, because love does not exist-- only power. If love existed I would not feel forced to manipulate you to get the what I was never given freely (e.g. attention, love, validation, etc.) Relationships are about power not connecting.' They were taught early on that relationships are essentially unsafe. Feelings meant vulnerability, so it's safer to get one's needs met via manipulation--Why would you allow the "caretaker" (the one that criticizes, belittles) to have power over you by having emotions? Doesn't it feel more rewarding when you learn to manipulate and control the caretaker enemy and make them pay for the way the treated you? If you can control your emotions, you can learn not to be at the mercy of them and feel hurt, rejected, and powerless. Narcs are extraordinary sensitive to ego insults due to the lack of love/acceptance and use devaluation as a way to deal with the insults/injury. It's safer not to feel. Although their maladaptive ways keep them safe, they are extremely unhappy with their inability to form loving relationships. But they do not believe loving relationships exist and it is hard to seek, miss, or value what one never had--especially when it means subjecting yourself to feel hurt and disappointment again and to lose the sense of power that protected you (but now impairs you). It is an extremely emotionally immature disposition, but they received the message early that love and loving attention wasn't give freely making them believe manipulation is the only alternative. I read somewhere that codependency and narcissism are flip sides of the same coin. It doesn't sound right, but as a codependent/counterdependent with narcissistic tendencies, it makes sense. The child innately believes he/she is good, but the parents send an opposing message. Both the narcissist and codependent internalize the negative message, but the narcissist develops a false ego and rebels, while the codependent enmeshes in an attempt to win approval. Both of their egos depends upon another to exist, since their sense of Self is never developed due to the abuse/neglect.

Has helped me immensely - Wish I had read it before other books

This is not the first book I have read on NPD. I wish this would have been the very first book I read, instead. It would have saved me of much headache and heartache. I am not finished reading this book, but I had to come in here and provide a review already. Just from the very first pages, this book has been able to help me understand my own personal situation with the narcissist in my life. A book that finally says it clearly the way it is and with sounded advise, not just for professionals in the field, but for the regular folk who has unfortunately been the victim of narcissist abuse. Because we have to call it for what it is: Abuse. I wish the courts in this country would be given this book and more education on this matter, especially when there are children involved. Courts force you to share custody with the narcissist parent when children and the former spouse should actually be allowed to keep contact to a minimum or no contact at all. In this particular case, exposure to the narcissist is not really a good idea for developing spirits and minds. Anybody who knows anything about NPD will tell you that the best thing to do is to go no contact. Other books suggest to remother the narcissist or do this or that. It does not work with these individuals because in their minds, they are always right and the whole world is conspiring against them. That's the main reason why neither the courts, nor supposed trained professionals can provide a diagnostic of NPD for those individuals because they can put a great act together for the whole world to see. By the time you realize what you're dealing with, you're already caught in their web of lies and deceive. Shahida Arabi explains all of this very clearly, in a way that anybody can understand. She has included clear examples of situations that are the "norm" for those suffering from this abuse. Anybody can see the scars left by violent physical abuse, but when it comes to emotional abuse, it is very difficult to prove in court or even to those who may be close to the victim. Shahida explains all the tools that a narcissist will use to control those around him or her. She shares her own personal and professional experience, as well as those of victims who have entrusted her with their own experience. Some reviews say that she's a bit repetitive at times. I have noticed that while reading the book. But believe me, repetition can be good to make some points, especially after you have been a victim yourself. Some things need to be repeated more than once because you have been gaslighted so much that you have trouble discerning reality from fog and you keep doubting yourself after so much abuse of this kind.

For what my own personal opinion might be worth, and from the view point of someone who has suffered the abuse of a narcissist, this book is a must-read. If you're lost and you don't know where to go, you feel isolated and your gut feeling is telling you that something has to change and you don't know who to trust or where to go for help, start with this book. It will help you understand your own situation, why the narcissist in your life treats you kindly one moment to completely ignore you or put you down the next; why that person accuses you of being controlling when you feel you have absolutely no control over your life and you feel that he or she is actually controlling you, instead; you will understand where did that loving, caring, compassionate person of the early stages of your relationship has gone and why you might be now dealing with someone who doesn't even resemble that soulmate of yours; and more. I love the fact that she's been there and she's done her hard work to understand this pathology not only from a victim's stance, but from a professional point of view.

I also got the Kindle version since it is free when you buy the book and I had absolutely no problems downloading it. I had noticed a few slight changes from the paper to the electronic version (I'm guessing one is a newer edition, not sure why there're these slight differences, but it seems to just be an editing thing.) But there are minimal and it doesn't affect. I love that I can read the book on my tablet or from the paper copy with no problems.

I think I said enough. I could go on talking about it, but I will let the book speak for itself. Read the sneak-preview in here. If you're a victim, I'm sure you'll identify yourself even in those few pages. That's what happened to me. Only a victim can understand what I mean.
