Doch was davon ist im Nachhinein Realität, was Konstruktion, Manipulation und Legende? Am 27. Juni 1993 wurden während eines gemeinsamen Einsatzes von BKA und GSG 9 auf dem Bahnhof von Bad Kleinen der RAF-Terrorist Wolfgang Grams und der BGS-Beamte Michael Newrzella getötet, was sich in der Folge zu einem Polizei- und Politikskandal entwickelte und schließlich in einem Medienskandal kulminierte. So wie der Einsatz von Mogadischu zum Symbol für die gelungene „Feuertaufe“ der deutschen Spezialeinheit geworden ist und damit den Mythos GSG 9 begründet hat, so stellte Bad Kleinen – zumindest eine Zeit lang – gewissermaßen den Kontrapunkt dar. Pannen während des Einsatzes, Fehler und Ungereimtheiten während der anschließenden Ermittlungen und schließlich die Theorie einer möglichen Hinrichtung Grams rückten Polizei, Justiz und Politik in ein zweifelhaftes Licht. Wie zweifelhaft dieses Licht wirklich war, welche Rolle die Medien spielten und welche Intentionen Teile der Presse dabei verfolgten, soll im Folgenden ergründet und vor dem Hintergrund der soziologischen Funktion des Skandals eingeordnet werden. In linksextremen Kreisen liefert der Einsatz von Bad Kleinen bis heute Nährboden für komplexe Verschwörungstheorien. Recherchiert man im Internet zu diesem Thema, stößt man auf Unmengen an Thesen, die stets eine gemeinsame Kernüberzeugung eint: Für die Sympathisanten der RAF ist klar, dass Wolfgang Grams ein „Opfer“ der Staatsmacht wurde. Aber auch in politisch gemäßigteren Kreisen scheint es nach wie vor sicher, dass die genauen Umstände ungeklärt seien, unbestreitbar aber, dass die Verantwortlichen das Recht gebeugt und die Öffentlichkeit belogen hätten. Ich möchte hingegen versuchen, diesen Skandal jenseits von politisch motivierten Spekulationen in einem bislang weniger beachteten Sinne zu analysieren, den der Rechtsanwalt und ZDF-Journalist Butz Peters folgendermaßen ausgedrückt hat: "Bei diesem in der deutschen Geschichte einmaligen Polizei-Desaster ist nichts ungeklärt. Es war kein Staats-Mord, allerdings ein einzigartiges Versagen renommierter bundesdeutscher Medien."
